Visiting Kearney and found this hibachi/Japanese restaurant. The dining room is large, clean and very well decorated. The full bar looked impressive. I ordered takeout and had the two roll sushi combo. The spicy crunchy crab and spicy crunchy tuna was very good. The spicy crab was more spicy than the tuna but still good. The special comes with soup or salad. I chose salad and it was iceberg lettuce that wasn't drained well so it was watery. The service was pleasant and quick. We were traveling through on I-80 and wanted some sushi. We thought we found a suitable place, but contrary to its online hours, it wasn't open on a late Sunday afternoon. Bummer. A local resident saw us elderly folk looking confused in a parking lot, and told us to get our old butts to Kyoto if we wanted sushi. That anonymous young lady was right! We've eaten there a couple of times since. If you trust the wisdom of your elders, you'll get these rolls: Shaggy Dog, Pretty Alaska, and the Omega 3. Kearney, Nebraska. Good enough but Japanese rice is ALWAYS soft, not hard. Rinse rice until water runs clear, at least 5 times. Then allow rice to sit in water at least 20 minutes before cooking. Steam rice, then fluff rice afterwards. Serve. Also rice is NEVER served in a mound on a flat plate. This is unacceptable. It is always -- always-- served in a rice bowl. These items are fundamental to Japanese cuisine. We had vegetable tempura and rib eye steak. The steak was fatty and barely acceptable. Not great, cut up and fatty. Visited Kyoto on a Sunday afternoon. Interior looked a bit grim. We're quickly taken to a table. Ordered various sushi items - Alaska, Philadelphia, California, Crunchy yellowtail. Everything tasted really good. They have a fantastic happy hour menu and I strongly suggest checking it. Servers were very attentive through out. The service is always casual, never hurried. Food continues to be good but the portion sizes seem to be deminishing.

We've been here for lunch and for dinner. The staff has been cheerful and attentive. The food is very good and the potions are sizeable. We've found we can split a bento box and add a couple sides and walk away contented. The staff is fine with our adaptations and makes them work. The wine choices are also good. The wall decor and tables are very attractive. They handle children very well, too. We hope that they'll be successful we'd hate to lose them now that we've discovered them. Checked the reviews so decided to have dinner here. We are just passing in the area and this place was 4 stars. Could be just the area but this is the first "Japanese" restaurant that serves shumai and egg rolls which are Chinese. The whole box was disappointing. The chicken portion was small as well as the California rolls. This is the kind of food I would expect at a fast food restaurant and not at a dine in. The salad was wilted and can be seen on the lettuce leaves being a darker color. The miso soup was just warm and should have been hot. The only plus in this place was our server was great. Kudos to the owner for charging a premium price for mediocre food. Not that it makes a difference but I don't think no one here were even Japanese. read more

I've had several good experiences with this venue, and this server, but this time was very different. I arrived at 5:45 and asked for a table for three (given a pager to wait). We were seated at 6:15 and I was excited to see that we'd made out for happy hour. I selected a BUNCH of items for the table and waited for the server. He didn't come to the table until 6:29 and I asked if I still had time to order from the happy hour menu and he responded with hurry, so I told him what we wanted. He left but returned to inform me that it was 6:31, so I'd need to select something else. I was disappointed, having waited so long for a table and then for him to come to the table, but decided to overlook it and do the usual. Unfortunately, things didn't get better. I ordered the yellowish cheek appetizer and the sushi/sashimi combo for one. My friends ordered several items and we waited. Soup and salads arrived quickly and were tasty, as usual, but one had ordered the seaweed salad which did not arrive until we asked when our entrees came out. The entrees didn't come out until 7:30, an hour after we'd ordered; not to mention my appetizer had not come. The sushi rice was bland and dry and the sashimi tasted off - chewy and tasteless. My friend had finished her nigiri and waited on her fried rice that did not come out until 8:15 and I wondered what I should do about my appetizer - cancel it (which I hate to do) or wait. I asked the server and he assured me it was on its way. He brought it out at 8:30 - with my check! I laughed but attempted to eat it, but it was cold, bland, and I was no longer hungry. He cheated the plate without asking if I'd even wanted a box or asking if there was anything wrong with it. Just took my card and swiped it. I don't know what issues are going on in the back of house but I definitely think my days of enjoying sushi in Kearney are done. read more

Strange that a nice place like this spoils the ambiance, by wheeling a grey trolley that looks like it belongs in a hospital or prison, between tables of diners. Full of dirty dishes and left overs. I could not get out of there quickly enough! I do not know how the food goes from a near 5 star experience to what I endured. My wife and I both got miso soup, gyoza, shrimp shumai, maki set A (tuna, salmon, and yellowtail), chicken appetizer. The miso soup was so salty that neither of us could eat it. I tried picking out the cubes of tofu but even that was terribly salty. The shrimp shumai was lukewarm as was the chicken kabob. The chicken was overdone and tough...yuck! The gyoza was ok but not 5 star worthy. The maki was mediocre at best, I detected no off flavors. So, I am hoping I survive the experience without getting sick. Not bad at all. Was a bit nervous their beautiful decore was their main focus but that wasn't the case. The sushi was pretty good. The special rolls are definitely the way to go. The shrimp mango avocado roll was not that great but that's because it was up against their special rolls: Phoenix (special ingredient that caught my eye: seared peppers tuna) and the Omega 3 (mango sauce). Inside this place was really nice. Wish I could have sat and enjoyed my meal here. Ordered filet and lobster hibachi and onion soup. Lobster and steak were grilled to perfection. When they do, I must have some. My long time favorite. Just right service and attention for us. Not many other customers until we left. Then they began to appear. Good to see. If you like a taste of Japan and are in the Kearney area, you are in luck. My colleague and I found this place on Yelp and wanted to give it a try. We chose to sit at the sushi bar and we are so glad we did. The Sushi Chef greeted us with amazing appetizer salads. The staff was very nice and friendly. Our food was served at the exact appropriate time. Every item we ordered was fresh and prepared to perfection. I will definitely be back and bring my family. Love the fact that Kearney finally has this option! My mom and I tried and it and it was quite good. We had the chicken, steak and shrimp and it was a great portion to share. We also tried the shrimp tempura and it was good but you only got 2 shrimp so I was disappointed about that....if I wanted the fried veggies, I'd order the veggie tempura. When I order shrimp, I don't need the veggies and I expect at least 4 pieces to share. It was good but probably won't order it again for the price. However, the main meal was great. Very clean place, friendly staff and great food. This will definitely be a favorite of mine when in Kearney. read more

Passing BYE- Stopped on our way to Colorado and had we're craving sushi - we were not expecting to find great sushi in Nebraska - We DID!!! Great meal we tried 4 different rolls and ate it all.
