She asks several coworkers what to charge, rings it up at $2.99 for the iced coffee then another $2.49 for an iced coffee refill. I said WOW, I've never been charged that much at other locations, she says there's 6 more ounces in those cups so you have to pay the refill price because a large is only 24 ounces. I brought my own cup so I basically paid for a cup & 48 ounces of coffee but only got 30 ounces of coffee...what's wrong with this?? Next time I'll tell you it's a soda refill!!

I didn't get a chance to shop at Fareway, but I went to Hy-Vee a few times over my last week's stay in Bassett, and I have to admit I was impressed. The Hy-Vee in Charles City is a pleasant mixture of old timey things and new fangled options. Walk in and glance to your right on any weekend morning, and you'll see covered dished filled with traditional breakfast items and tables filled with local "blue hairs" (my mother's term, I swear!) and various sprogs and offspring, all socializing to beat the band. Two steps further, and behind the deli case you may see an Asian guy (I don't know his name, my family didn't either, they just knew he was Asian) who can whip you up a fresh, delectable stir-fry while you wait. You could also get prepared deli foods at this counter, and while I didn't, I suspect the fare might be good. Further on, there is an enormous meat case where we picked up some very good house-made brats. They're sold by the pound, wrapped in greased brown paper, and could be behind the fresh meat case at any Whole Paycheck. Fresh? OMG. Fresh. And while we didn't buy beef, I watched as the butcher unloaded a styrofoam box laden with giant, perfect, sweetly bloody steaks from the Amana Colonies, which I've never seen at any yupscale Grocerie and Expensive Food Emporium anywhere. We're talkin' grass-fed, baby. I was also surprised at the cheese selection. While there were wedges that looked slightly past their prime (the market for Asiago and Parmeggiano Reggiano is still under-developed here), nothing wasn't saleable, and.... whoo. Fresh Maytag Blue! And a random Welsh sharp cheddar that knocked my socks off. A quite big selection. I was impressed. The rest of the store also yielded surprises. I found not just lemon curd but lime curd, soy milk, tahini, and other things I hadn't expected to see in a small town Iowa grocery store. And.... there was SORGHUM! Sorghum syrup is as old-timey Iowa as it gets, and I was afraid that all the gourmet modern options would have crowded its earthy, deep-flavored goodness off the shelves. But no, there it was, right by the pancake syrups. Hooray! Final note: in Iowa, you can get wine and liquor in a special section of the grocery store. We found lots of good beers and plenty of quite decent wines, including a New Zealand Riesling that was superb - and affordable. Whoever manages this Hy-Vee deserves kudos for keeping up-to-date AND keeping what's best of traditional things. That can't be easy. Very highly recommended.

I usually do pick-up, this last year we have had numerous instances of not getting what we ordered, missing condiments, cold food, over-cooked food and the staff doesn't seem to understand their own menu. I tried talking to the kitchen manager Virginia. She became super defensive and actually blamed us for not being clear on our orders. I pointed out that if their are questions, they should clarify as we travel 15 miles to get to this place. She told me that we need to order off the menu. When I pointed out we did, she told me that was the wrong menu....how am I to know that? There are not dates and times on the food in the warmer and this has gotten us a few times. We have also noticed open toed shoes in the kitchen as well as a baby in a car seat, sometimes walking. An employee was carrying cooking oil and fell recently while using a poorly maintained walkway to dispose of the oil. She got frustrated with our complaints about the lack of quality and told us not to order there anymore. Wow! Needless to say, we will be taking her advice, If I were the owner of this place, I'd look at making a few changes before its too late.

Some are mirror images of one another, which I refer to as left hand stores and right hand stores, depending on which way you turn to approach the cash registers. This is a right hand store. When you go into the store, you'll get that feeling of Deja vu, which is exactly what the owners want you to feel. This store is newer so it uses the newer floor plan. It's left handed. Karuba Coffee, Dunkers, doughnuts, and hot foods are straight back. Rest rooms are on the far end, take a left at the cooler. Lottery forms are back there, too, for processing at the registers. The no-fee ATMs are to your left as you enter the store. Out on the gas island, you'll find Unleaded, Unleaded Premium, E-85, Unleaded 88, and Diesel #2. The store is 24/7. If you happen to drive an 18-wheeler, there is a separate truck fueling station. It's easy in and easy out with no silly roundabouts to come through. You'll find Diesel #2, Premium Diesel, and Diesel Exhaust Fluid. This is a nearly complete auto and truck plaza, there's no car wash but that's about all that's missing. It's a complete convenience store with sandwiches, coffee and soft drinks and almost anything you could need in the coolers, freezers and food gondolas. Like all Kwik Trips, the bakery all comes from La Crosse and it's pretty good. It's everything you've come to expect in a Kwik Trip and a whole lot more.
