I mean if you like California Rolls then that's a good thing but I'm here for the fish. I ordered a normal Maki Combo one time and it did come with a spicy roll which I found interesting. I would give this place a 3.5... it's better than a 3, but not perfect. The sushi wasn't as flavorful as other places I enjoy in Middletown and Wethersfield. But they had a large selection of rolls, it seemed fresh, and the sushi had a nice presentation and the restaurant had a cool visual atmosphere. I didn't like that there was a large vibrating compressor sound/noise that was very loud through our dinner that seemed to come from behind the bar. It was very distracting, and couldn't hear myself think. Didn't make for good conversation atmosphere during dinner. Wow guys, this little sushi restaurant is a hidden gem! I just ordered the Prince Roll and it was amazing. Smooth snd delicious! This is my new go to sushi takeout spot. Every other place in the area has disappointed me for one reason or another. I always get the same thing at a new sushi place, a relatively safe order of spicy tuna roll and shrimp tempura roll. Bonus when a place has hibachi/fried noodles, which Kuyi does! (You can't be a 5 in my eyes without the noodles) The spicy tuna roll is good, nice fresh red tuna. It's not as spicy as I'd like, but that's what wasabi is for. The shrimp tempura roll is standout. It's huge with good quality shrimp. They take the shell off the tail piece which is key. Most places around here don't do that. And the sweet glaze is so good and there is always enough of it. The noodles are amazing, and cheap, as the fried noodles usually are. It's just plain fried noodles, like you get at a hibachi restaurant on the side of your meal, and it definitely takes care of my noodle fix. I've gone a few times now and it's been consistent quality, which is very important to me. I'm now at the point where I feel safe to order something else and start trying some of their specialty rolls. The restaurant is very clean and inviting, definitely would go there to eat in as well. My wife and I tried kuyi last night. We had a 10 off 50 coupon that was about to expire and wanted to try some place different. The inside was nicely done, however it was a little warm, some celing fans would of been nice. The biggest downside of the meal was the waitress. I'm not sure if she was having a bad day or what, but I dont think she should be working with the public. She was rude and almost yelled at me when I asked for some water. As for the food and drinks, We got the scorpion bowl for 14 dollars a good deal, but it came with small straws so it was a pain to move it back and forth. Moonlight in middletown gives out big straws. The crab rangoon was decent but not as good as moonlight. The outside was really crispy like a chip. As for the entrees, we got steak and chicken habitchi. The salad, veggies, rice, shrimp were all standard. The steak however, was really good better than moonlight. It was very tender and done a perfect medium rare. The other big disappointment of the night was no yum yum sauce. What Japanese restaurant does not have yum yum sauce? Never eaten in here so I can't comment on this. This is my usual go to for lunch/dinner specials. Their 3 roll lunch special actually tastes good(you'd be surprised how some places just don't care when it comes to making these simple rolls for lunch) compared to a few of the other choices between Cromwell and Middletown. Overall the food is consistent every time I do take out and never been disappointed. Nothing really stands out as spectacular or very well done, but it's def a step up from say a quick "Chinese food" take out.(I mean this in the best way possible) Be prepared as sometimes they take a bit longer than you'd expect on take out orders so just give it more time or order earlier. read more

There were highs and lots of lows to our experience at Kuyi, the restaurant smells amazing so we have high hopes for this sushi house in the plaza behind KFC and the 99 restaurant in Cromwell. We took our food to go and it wasn't a bad experience. For 18.95 I got a Terri chicken bento box. It came with miso soup, white rice, a good size order of shrimp tempura and veggies, shrimp shumai, 6 piece Cali roll and a huge helping of chicken. I had a hard time finishing it and had to take it in strides, there was a lot of food. I really enjoyed the white rice it was moist and sticky and wonderful. The California rolls were great and I loved the shrimp tempura. Not a fan of the miso soup. There wasn't a good mix of broth vs. tofu and seaweed. The chicken was way too salty. We ordered the chicken Yakitori and it needed salt. The ragoon were different than I have had before and I didn't enjoy them. The pork fried rice was inedible. It was super burnt tasting and I didn't eat more than a bite. It's a 2$ upcharge from white rice to pork fried. Pretty good and decent price. I would try them again, next time. Maybe try only sushi. We were stuffed and there was lots of chicken left. The serving we're big, we didn't need apps. All and all an alright experience, not memorable. read more

For example you can get 2 sushi rolls for $8.50 and 3 rolls for $10.50, miso soup or salad included. You can't go wrong with the Spicy Salmon Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, Tuna Avocado Roll. They have Bento Box specials too. I've ordered the Shrimp Tempura ($9.50), comes with miso soup or salad, white rice, shumai and a California roll. From the main menu, I recommend the Dancing Yellowtail roll ($15.95) with avocado and jalapeño. This is my new favorite! On our way home from hanging poolside, my wife ordered up a few different choice menu items for take out. We started with the Caterpillar roll which looked so good we didn't even wait to get home! My fiancée and I spent about $80 in sushi from this place, and when I asked for 4 sides of spicy mayo for all that sushi, the lady said she would only give me one because they're normally one for $1. I understand if I spent like $20 on sushi, but we spent around $80. One of the items we ordered was the Dragon Egg which is made of mostly avocado and the avocado was BLACK. It wasn't simply oxidized, but it was nearly rotten and it was not edible at all. We called to let them know and their response was "well, avocados aren't really in season right now." Well, if "avocados aren't really in season right now," then maybe you shouldn't be serving them, ESPECIALLY if they're rotting. Unbelievable. My favorite go to place for sushi as of late from this area. I've enjoyed everything I've tried here. By comparison to other places, I now prefer Kuyi Sushi over Moonlight and Japanica ll in Middletown. The seaweed salad is good. No filler, which I like. I do not want to pay for a bed of ice berg lettuce so the restaurant can cut costs on an expensive salad. I will say, the consistency isn't quite on target. Sometimes the flavor is a bit different from one order to the next. But, the seaweed salad is a solid choice and you get a good serving for the price you're paying. The basic hand rolls were satisfactory and better than other establishments in the area. I have not been served any imitation crab meat in the rolls, as it should be. As for special rolls, so far I've tried the Super Volcano roll and Angry Dragon roll. Both rolls were huge and very filling. Everything tasted fresh. Their vegetable gyoza/dumplings are very good when hot. Last time I ordered them they arrived by delivery almost cold and just weren't as good. Overall, the food is of a good quality and the customer service is very good. The waitstaff and delivery have had good attitudes in all my interactions with them. The people who run Kuyi seem like nice folks. Certainly, they've earned my return business. I feel like I'm getting my money's worth when I order from them. Kuyi would be perfect for a date, a family gathering, dinner with friends, or even a solo lunch like I had : ) With so many scrumptious looking items to choose from on the menu I went with a miso soup and seaweed salad as well as the lunch special salmon skin and shrimp tempura rolls. I flew in from FL and was craving some sushi after the gym. I work in Japan a lot and this has made me very selective when eating sushi. The thing I noticed the most was the sushi case.
