When it first started high school students from Waianae and Nanakuli, who were unable to function in the classroom, came here to learn how to care about themselves through caring of the land with traditional Hawaiian Values. The program has expanded with Hoa Aina's Mission Statement, "Creating Peaceful Communities in Harmony with Nature, through the Eyes, Hands and Hearts of the Children." Makaha elementary students use the 5 acre farm daily and learn hands experience of how plant, take care, and harvest a plant. They are able to care for different animals. Public and private schools and the community is welcome to the farm. They offer different programs where you can learn how to grow your own garden. The school program is called Ke-Ala program. Our students went on the general tour. There is a Polynesia tour for older students. Ke-Ala Program- Before we entered the farm the students chanted an Oli along with the adults. Makaha farms sent us over the chant and we practiced it with our students before we arrived. We went along with another class and were split up in to two groups with a guide to show us around. One class went to the animals and the other went on a tour of the farm. Animals- The students enjoyed learning about the different animals. They had: Rabbits Fish Chickens Geese Ducks Goats Sheep Turtles Bees They also got to pet all of them and feed them. Tour of the farm: garden On this tour we got to see projects that the students from Makaha created. Kat our guide talked about the different plants. There were so many I couldn't remember all the names. We saw taro, jackfruit, cotton, banana trees, etc. During the tour we got to see, feed, and touch earthworms. After the tour around the farm the students got to plant their own sunflowers. Each student got to take this home. This farm is 5 acres, there is a lot more to see here then what we saw. Lunch The farm has a nice covered outdoor seating area. It has sinks next to it so the children could wash their hands before lunch. Last year we were able to harvest taro and replant it. Each student got to peddle a bike, which turned a blender, and we made smoothies. They used different fruits from around the farm and kalo. The students and adults really enjoyed it. Overall, it's a great educational experience for the kids. The tour guides speak age appropriately to the children. It's a wonderful field trip to attend with your children. The only downfall is its a bit pricey.

After visiting Sumida Farm and tasting different watercress dishes, I can see myself picking up some watercress from the grocery store. For so many years, I've passed the beautiful green area along Kamehameha Highway in front of Pearlridge and next to Starbucks and thought what a breath of fresh air, compared to everything else in the area along Kam Highway. I was very fortunate to be a part of an exclusive tour of Sumida Farm. They do not do this regularly and it is not open to the general public. We got to meet Mr. David Sumida, the 3rd generation owner of the family-owned business graced us with his presence and gave a brief history lesson about their farm. His parents moved from Japan and began growing watercress. Fast forward to today, many developers have offered millions of dollars for the land in hopes of developing it into something else. Bravo to the Sumida Family for standing their ground and hanging onto the precious, watercress-bearing land that has fed Hawaii for years. We got to walk along the watercress field and even dip our feet in the cool water. Being there was so serene, and being down in the field, I almost forgot that we were surrounded by Kam Highway and Pearlridge Center. We were treated to a special lunch by a chef who whipped up recipes that contained watercress and let me tell you, some of the dishes didn't even taste like it contained watercress even if it was one of the main ingredients. The lunch gave us many new ideas on how to incorporate watercress into our meals. I have a whole new appreciation for this vegetable and for the beautiful farm along Kam Highway.

Did you know that we used to have dozens of watercress farms on island? Now there's just 2 farms left on Oahu. I've learnt that it takes about 6-8 weeks, till the watercress grows back. They call it "seasonal crops" with longer summers, and less cool nights in the summer. You're looking at a 30-40% production from July-January (depending on the weather). With a dozen of pure springs where the water flows, is what watercress needs to survive, along with sun, and not too much humidity. Here, you'll also find lots of fish, crayfish, and birds in this environment. You'll also notice the sprinkler system, which is a pest deterrent system, pulling from the spring water (fully sustainable). It was a totally beautiful (and hot) day today! The Hawaii Okinawan Center is located in Waipio Gentry and is easily found by either traveling on Kam Highway or the H-2 Freeway. However, I would probably recommend a route via Kam Hwy for convenience reasons. The party I attended was in the Legacy II ballroom, of which the entrance faces the parking lot. I later discovered that the Legacy Ballroom is actually 1 huge ballroom, and it was divided into 2 separate areas on this evening as another party was taking place in the other half. Incidentally, the side where the other party was taking place was larger and had a stage as well. Although the portion of the ballroom where our party was held was much smaller, I liked the high ceilings so there was the illusion that the room was slightly big and grand. I believe there were about 18 tables (seating for 10) set up for the party, but since this section was smaller, there wasn't much room to have more tables set up if the need arose. Food and drinks were provided by A Catering Experience, which (from what I was told later that evening) is the catering division if Zippy's. The food served to guests at the party included Chinese chicken salad, assorted fruits, rice, noodles, fried chicken, roast pork, mahimahi, and adobo (which most of us thought it was sweet and sour pork). Besides water, fruit punch (very watery!), coffee, and tea was also provided. Lastly, the banquet staff was very gracious, polite, and kind. I was very impressed with the attentiveness of the staff that night, and their quality service contributed to a wonderful evening spent with friends and family. PARKING: FREE parking available in the HI Okinawa Center lot. First come first serve. Bottom Line: Clean venue. FREE and ample parking.

We contemplated on going back. We abruptly turned our car around and zoomed back to the mango farm. When we got there, I asked if we could take pictures of the mangoes without touching them. We were granted permission. To our amazement of seeing purple mangoes, we had to take photos! They had an abundance of mangoes! We felt like we were in mango heaven. We got to taste the mangoes too! We like them sweet and sour. We bought 4 since we were leaving in 2 days. We continued to take photos. The owners told us to pick a mango that was ready to be picked. I was so thrilled to find them at the Saturday KCC Farmers Market though I did the first walk through I seriously didn't notice them until several passes I must've been overwhelmed lol! Not only do they sell their fresh Portabella Mushrooms we get to enjoy what makes them so phenomenal. Mushroom poppers, Mushroom Risotto Cakes, and Zucchini fries are all my favorites!! You certainly can enjoy them ala carte but they have a trio which was something I couldn't resist. All made to order which actually is a very short wait they can package it for here to enjoy as you browse or in a container to go which I thought was a thoughtful gesture which is what I did because I later wanted to enjoy it sitting on the curb but up at the Cactus Garden. They also have some other friend yummies like Deep Fried Bananas, Deep Fried Oreos, Deep Fried Portabella Sandwich which is their 15th Anniversary Special. It is best if you just use your gps to sweetland farm cause they're literally right in front of it. i've bought costco eggs and waialua eggs at the same time and you really can tell the difference! the local eggs has a bright yellow tone in the yolk, and it was such a difference that my husband thought the costco one was old/spoiled. LOL. The eggs at the farm is $3 for 30 checked eggs or $7 for 20 jumbo eggs. i make my dogs gourmet meals sometimes so the check eggs are perfectly fine. they're just not the best for boiling. Otherwise you can find them at the markets or sams club, it's its way cheaper to just get them direct. Just take some time to drive up there and support them because they're doing wonderful things for the community too!
