I was shocked to have read the first reviewer's comments and completely disagree. From the very beginning they went above and beyond to help me. Last summer, I came here during their business hours to obtain information about enrolling my child for kindergarten. They gave me all the necessary paperwork and explained everything I needed. Towards the first day of school, I was a little excited and impatient about receiving information in the mail and so I called numerous times for information. They were never rude and always so helpful and even encouraging. Fast forward to orientation, parent teacher conferences, etc....perfectly organized. The principal Mrs. Cioppa is wonderful. His teachers are are amazing. The security is on point with Mr. C at the entrance throughout the whole day. I couldn't be happier with Cedar Road Elementary with their faculty and staff. The kindergarteners just finished up a Fun Run this week to allocate funds for brand new outdoor equipment. This is a great school in an even better school district!!

Grade Entering:…read moreKindergarten Issue: Obtaining basic information for: orientation, supplies, and dress code, and website issues My child is entering kindergarten and I need basic information to begin the school year. Upon searching for all the information and bouncing around websites and placing at least 4-5 phone calls, I finally located everything I need. It should not be so difficult to find this information. Calendars are blank, links are missing, etc. So here we go... 1. Your kid needs a medical check-up/physical prior to entering school and proof of vaccinations. Most doctor offices will have the forms you need on hand. You have to show up to school with these forms, an original birth certificate, and a utility bill with proof of your address on it. It is not required in Virginia to provide your child's Social Security number. 2. Your kid needs supplies: Supplies are determined by what your child individually needs and what they are assigned based on gender. Guess what, pre-sharpened pencils really is a thing...There is also a request/requirement of "one clean athletic sock for wipe boards." Come on now, who buys one sock? Just ask for the set. They ask for Clorox or Lysol wipes but per the individual I spoke to on the phone, they prefer Lysol. *She had to ask someone nearby while I listened. Just specify that on the list then. By the way, you can only find Lysol wipes at Target. You'll need 24 glue sticks. I would be happy to pitch in on one of those old school tubs of minty scented paste. I will not blame teachers for this. However, I find it pathetic that parents are supplying sanitary items: paper towels, soap, and Lysol wipes. Quart sized Ziploc bags. Are those the slide zippers or the original designed ones you prefer? Called about it. Answer: "I don't know. That would be a good question for orientation." Thanks for the lack of effort. Specify it on the list. By the way, orientation is four days before school on a weekday in the morning. The website link for kindergartners has been down for a month. I called because we went to the school and got the official printed list on the neon green paper and I wanted to make sure they were not updating it. I was told by an individual, "Oh, I will let our computer guy know." It's still down as of today. 3. Dress Code: There is no link Based on the county school website (not Cedar Road's none existent link) you will get a note/letter letting you know what the code is "by the end of the first month of school." Wait, what? What parent isn't buying school clothes before school starts? Ugh. *Never got that letter. I called. Girls: Shorts must reach the finger tips Skirts can't be short - probably a fingertip rule too, not sure. Tank top straps - three fingers wide, no spaghetti straps. (Those sexy shoulders and all...) No flip flops Sandals must have a back on them Boys: Apparently, none. At least I wasn't told. The county website is generically broad and spends a lot of time on see through clothing and the standard, "must not be distracting to the learning process" - basically generic and open to their interpretation... Orientation for kindergarten: Is at the end of August, but good luck finding that information prior to August on their page. 4. The links on the page are useless for parents coming to the school for the first time (see above) There really are parents who prepare and do not wait for tax-free weekends and who just want to find information in one spot. Calendars are inactive until August. And seemingly dress codes are different for different schools...I'm guessing. I have no interest in fighting the hoards of parents tearing up the school sections at the stores the weekend before school starts. The cpschools.net site is choppy and not user friendly. I am profoundly underwhelmed, and I am crossing my fingers there will be something done about the website. If there is, perhaps the school would receive less phone calls and teachers would not have to answer phones over the summer. User friendly does not apply here. Finding necessary information, the basics, should not be so difficult and frustrating. I started poking around and attempting to prepare in late June/early July. Schedules change, staffing is limited, etc. I understand that explanation; however, right now it is falling on deaf ears due to the frustration it has manifested. Efficiency and ease of use is an unfortunate downfall for Cedar Roads/ Chesapeake Public Schools at this moment. I will say, through all of my calls, Liz (I believe may be a teacher) has been the most helpful. Others who have answered the phone (I didn't catch a name) have been lackluster at best in their efforts to find and produce answers.

She is not afraid to speak up against injustice, loves and protects nature, and is incredibly kind. Classroom: It provides a true Montessori environment that promotes independence and peace, making it the perfect place for kids of all backgrounds because they truly meet you where you are. The teacher-to-student ratio is 8:1. The staff are genuinely amazing and passionate about their work. Field trips, show-and-tell, nature walks, and much more are part of the experience. They invite people from all over to teach about animals, places, and everything in between. I never worried about dropping my kids off at school because I knew they were in good hands. My daughter is very confident and always tells me about the fun activities she participated in at school. Ms. Michelle was her main teacher, and she is like a real life Ms. Honey from Matilda. Ms. Jackie, Ms. Leanne, Ms. Sandy, and all the other educators are extraordinary, and I am forever grateful for giving my children a well rounded start in life. Extracurriculars: The school offers soccer and yoga. My daughter participated in both, and it's wonderful to see her practice her yoga poses at home. A note to know: There is no aftercare or beforecare available. School begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. I cannot recommend this school enough, and it is so bittersweet that my daughter has aged out and is moving on to her next adventure.

We love the school's philosophy and their willingness to accommodate our schedule and last minute changes. We feel strongly enough to drive 45 minutes across town for our children to attend Sandpiper. In our now 5 year affiliation with the school we have never heard a whiff of impropriety. My guess is the parents complaining in the reviews raised a lot of red flags of their own and the school decided these parents weren't worth the trouble. I think we've all met the type.

When our oldest had been there for about 6 months, a spot opened up for us to move here to one of the military Child Development Centers. My son came home with a diaper rash almost every day while attending this center. Despite using the same diapers, wipes, and products at home without any issues, staff repeatedly suggested that he was suddenly allergic to them or to foods he was eating at daycare--even though he eats the same foods at home without any reaction. Instead of addressing the recurring issue, it often felt like excuses were being made rather than taking responsibility. Cleanliness was another major concern. The classrooms, particularly the infant and toddler rooms, did not appear to be maintained to the standard I expected. The rugs where children crawl, play, and lie down often appeared dirty. Although there is supposed to be a no-shoes policy in these rooms, I frequently observed adults walking through with their shoes on in the same areas where the children spend most of their time. The professionalism of the staff was also disappointing. Several employees came across as rude or dismissive when concerns were raised. It was discouraging to feel that legitimate issues were not taken seriously. I also learned that staffing shortages seemed to prevent management from addressing ongoing concerns, which only added to my frustration. Perhaps the most concerning comment I heard was from staff members who said they would not enroll their own children at this center. Hearing that from employees themselves raised serious concerns about the confidence they had in the care being provided. This daycare has the potential to be a great center, but in my experience, significant improvements are needed in cleanliness, professionalism, communication, and the quality of care provided to infants and toddlers. Unfortunately, my family's experience was not a positive one, and I would not choose to bring my child back nor recommend it to other families.

My wife and I decided to place our daughter in Goddard. Why? Because we're smart [I think so]. There are many things to share about Goddard. The education was/is great, but there were little extra things that brought my wife and I mental comfort. Leaving your kid(s) with other people....at a place, can be weird. Not at Goddard. No odd smells, sticky surfaces, odd interactions with staff; education, order, structure, and fun was in the air. There's nothing but positives, but a few items of personal interest pop out in my mind. Communication. We were always consulted in advance of our child's progress through written documentation and daily reports via the Tadpoles App. I didn't really know the power of the application, but it was comforting and very informative. As parents, of course, we all wonder what happens to our kid(s) when they're not in our presence - normal. What the Tadpoles App did, was to allow parents to check the status of drop-off/pick-up times, daily activities, see pics, see videos, get notes from teachers, reminders, and much more. The impressive thing, the teachers were fantastic at keeping [us] parents informed using technology - EVERY DAY. Keep in mind, the use of this application wasn't the only thing Goddard did extremely well at. At The Goddard School, there is obviously a focus on learning, but the school as a whole has a very wide range of activities throughout the year. YOU will see and be IMPRESSED! Teachers and parents [us] were in constant communication no matter the circumstance. If my child did well or needed more improvement at home in an area of weakness, I was happy to employ and reinforce practices that helped the teachers during their day with our child. Likewise, I appreciated the attention that was given to our child. I have not a word of negativity to speak; I couldn't imagine it. Side-note. After spending half my life in the military, I've learned a few things about: - attention to detail - communication - cleanliness - training & education - safety - teamwork - security - good times! This facility advertises itself as a nut-free center, and peanut products are not supposed to be allowed inside. Despite this, a staff member gave multiple children -- including my nephew -- peanut butter crackers. What makes this even more alarming is that earlier that same day, when my nephew approached her for cheese crackers, she specifically told him, "You can have these; they aren't the peanut butter ones," demonstrating that she was fully aware of his allergy. Shortly after eating the crackers, my sister (who was working there at the time) noticed him clawing at his mouth and throat, his tongue protruding -- clear signs of anaphylaxis. The director was not in the building, and his EpiPen was locked in her office. Acting quickly, my sister retrieved her own EpiPen from her purse and administered it, which stabilized him. Per his physician's standing medical guidance, paramedics were called, and he was transported to the hospital. Disturbingly, staff questioned why 911 was being called since "the Epi brought him back," which demonstrates a serious lack of emergency medical training. Administering epinephrine does not eliminate the need for emergency medical evaluation. There were reportedly no meaningful consequences for the staff member involved. We were told she "didn't realize the seriousness" of his allergy -- in a nut-free facility. Beyond this life-threatening incident, there are broader systemic concerns: Chronic understaffing. I personally worked there briefly to help because ratios were so strained. Staff hired primarily to meet inspection headcounts rather than qualifications. Infants' bottles allegedly discarded before pickup so parents would not know their child had not eaten. A staff member with documented anger issues who reportedly handled a baby aggressively in a bouncer, with prior concerns dismissed. Babies allowed to drink from a staff member's personal cups/straws. A child reportedly left unattended on the playground for approximately 10-15 minutes. Bite/scratch incidents allegedly not consistently reported to avoid losing enrollments. It is important to acknowledge that not every staff member reflects these issues. Ms. Demetri (preschool teacher) and Ms. Stella are both caring, attentive, and genuinely invested in the children's well-being. Their professionalism and compassion stand out in contrast to the broader operational failures. However, leadership sets the tone for safety, compliance, and culture. In our experience, this center demonstrated inadequate emergency preparedness, poor supervision practices, and troubling ethical concerns. For a childcare facility, these are not minor oversights -- they are fundamental safety failures. Parents should conduct thorough due diligence, review inspection reports, and ask direct questions about allergy protocols, staff training, and incident reporting procedures before considering enrollment. Your child's safety depends on it.
