My son had completed his work a few weeks ago with no mistakes. Recently, he received the same homework from the previous weeks. Perhaps, you think it was just a mistake on their part. But I don't believe so because they have a record of my son's work.

It was well run, organized and focused on the fundamentals of Kumon. We had to change centers because we moved. I actually looked at the Kumon Silver Spring on New Hampshire previously before going to the Laurel center, but decided not to go with this center because I could never get anyone to return my calls. That should have been a sign! When we moved and it just made more logistical sense to go to the Kumon on New Hampshire we reluctantly changed centers. First of all the center is visibly disorganized, particularly if you go there on a day where there are classes. Something we never experienced at the Laurel Center. Also, as opposed to observing my son during a timed setting once a week when he went to the center (as we were used to in Laurel), they focused all of his time at the center on making homework corrections. Kumon is supposed to focus on accuracy and speed, they rarely ever saw the two skills together with my son except when he tested to move from one level to another. The administrative management was the worse! Kumon's are independently owned and operated franchises, so just because they all bare the Kumon name does not mean they are all the same. Again, whenever I left a message on the voicemail at this center I NEVER received a return call. In the end I needed to manage another administrative matter with them and I received countless promises from the husband (its a wife and husband ran operation) that he would follow up with me and get back to me, he NEVER did. I would encourage discerning parents who are looking for a Kumon experience for their kids to look at other options in the area. There are a couple that are not too far from this center and I know based on experience, you and your child would have a better Kumon experience.

After working with Ryan, my GRE scores went up by over 8 points, which is a huge feat for someone with extreme test anxiety. Not only was Ryan an excellent communicator throughout the process, but I felt like he was fully on my team for making me improve my scores. Ryan created a completely tailored program built especially for me to tackle my weaknesses and give me the best study practices. We also managed to laugh and have some fun throughout a normally grueling process.. I could not recommend working with Ryan highly enough for any and al standardized test needs!

Going into the year, I had no idea whether to take the ACT or the SAT and he helped guide me in a path that lead me to the most success. I ended up primarily studying for the ACT and took the SAT a few times toward the end of the year, and he had great tricks and access to excellent study tools to help me and give me a lot of practice. The workbook that Marks Education has created is so helpful and full of all the information you need for the test. Incredibly well thought out! He also gave me actual ACT and SATs to give me practice so that when I walked into the test I knew what to expect. He also had awesome packets and review materials, as well as previous AP tests to help me prepare for the AP tests I took Ryan gave me confidence in an area that is hard to feel confident about. He always motivated me, and knew how to help me in areas that I was struggling in. Ryan was an amazing tutor, but he also went the extra mile to check in with me and keep up with the other things I had going on in my life. He was a part of my team junior year, and I am so thankful for all of his help.

For all this time, I have been exceptionally pleased with the instruction and the results. I have, most recently utilized the services of Sunhee, an SAT tutor who has singlehandedly enabled my daughter to raise her SAT score by over 200 points. The experience of SAT test prep, which can be grueling, unpleasant and painful, has been actually enjoyable for my daughter. I think this has much to do with the relationship and rapport she has developed with Sunhee. From the first session to the last, he has been responsive, supportive, encouraging, and motivational. Sunhee is not the only tutor who has yielded exceptional results for my children. Both of my sons also used Prep Matters tutors, and I was equally and exceptionally pleased with the academic support and guidance they received. In all cases, my kids reached their target scores as a result of the instructional tips and strategies the tutors provided and were accepted into competitive colleges. I have also known Ned Johnson, the owner, for over two decades. He is an incredible person, dedicated to achieving success for all Prep Matter students. He has called me at home to discuss my kids' progress and has personally met with my kids when they have struggled academically or needed an extra boost of encouragement. He cares about each and every student who walks through his doors, remembering their names and stories long after they have graduated from high school and gone to college. Ned is an extraordinary man and the example he sets is on full display in the staff he employs. His tutors work hard to achieve results, embracing the same values inculcated by Ned. In many ways, Prep Matters feels like a family. This is a personal tutoring experience that adapts strategies specific to a child's needs. This daughter is my youngest and will close this chapter of my life. I will always be grateful to Ned and to Prep Matters for being there for me and my kids--for believing in them and working with them to create the best possible outcomes.

For quite a while, we've worked with math tutor Sharon Kim in the Bethesda office and absolutely LOVE her. She is really great about learning each kid's way of learning and then teaching effectively to that. Also, my son just really enjoys spending time with her and doing all the math they do. I'm super fond of her as well. We also worked very briefly with Moose in the Tenleytown office. He is a physics whiz and the brevity of our working relationship was only because my son had no teacher at school so needed guidance until one was hired. Moose was the perfect interim! I have recommended both him and Sharon many times. We have also worked with PM in the college counseling realm. Full disclosure- I have my own college counseling business, but my son and I didn't want to work together during his application process. So, we interviewed several companies and immediately chose to partner with PM's Maureen Delaney. She is wonderful, and my son loves working with her. Lastly, I'll note that Ned Johnson, founder and leader of PM, is a terrific human who is deeply committed to and knowledgeable about education, development, and adolescent. It's been a pleasure to get to know him, and I highly recommend the books he and Bill Stixrud have authored. The prices aren't low, but honestly, I feel great about paying such a caring, supportive group of people. Their help has been worth every penny!

What we discovered was that they may be very good for students who are behind or have emotional or learning issues, but they are not effective for boosting an already high-achieving kid. I have broken the review into three areas below: The Consult The two main directors: Joanne and something starting with an M, come across as very knowledgeable and competent during the consult. It is only later, during execution, that you find out that they really may not have given you all the information you needed, and are very disorganized. In our case, we were there for high school admissions test prep. My son took a sample test to create a baseline, and then we met with both directors for an hour. Their "scoring system" was broken when we arrived for our consult, and Joanne rushed to score manually, making us wait 45 minutes. She then read us his seemingly excellent scores, which turned out later to be wrong...he did even better than their first guess. Nonetheless, they rallied and described what sounded like a solid plan to push him over the top, address his weak areas, and put him in position for "scholarship money," according to Joanne. Since many of the private high schools we are looking at are pricey, that, of course, appealed to us. Later, it turned out that they really didn't know what constituted a "great" score, which affected the direction of our tutoring, and most of the schools don't offer merit-based "scholarship money." We never were able to receive a copy of his actual baseline scores. Every time I requested a copy of his scores, they were somehow in the possession of the other director who was not there at the time. The Environment There are no private spaces for your child to be tutored. You go to the center, and they seem to have a very high concentration of kids with behavioral and learning issues who wander around and often interrupt other students being tutored. They will not allow the parents to go back and see where their child will be tutored or to meet the tutors...that should have been a show-stopper for me. But I was trusting that recommendation from my close friend! The Actual Tutoring Their tutoring is EXPENSIVE. If it had been effective, it is probably a competitive price. I don't want to write a book here, so suffice it to say that the tutors themselves were actually probably (since I didn't meet them) very good. The problems with the tutoring were with the architecture...I believe that points to the directors. They made commitments as to what would be covered that were not met. They never worked with him on his essay, for example, which they promised the first day. They did not seem to know how to craft a tutoring approach that was specific to him and focused on his weaker areas, but, rather, they stuck to their formulaic book and forced him to waste precious (expensive) time on subject matter that he had mastered...of which there was a great deal. So, not surprisingly, there was not enough time to adequately address the areas he truly needed help on. When I addressed the fact that his major weakness was vocabulary and they had spent no time at all on that, I was told by Joanne that they couldn't help him with that, that was up to him. Huh!?!? And, of course, when he finally took the real test, that's where he fell down. And his other scores, overall, went down or stayed the same. I wrote two emails to the Executive Director, Karen Donald, and received no response. Overall, a VERY disappointing and costly experience.

Caution! I used Huntington several years ago in an attempt to help my learning disabled daughter…read more They were not qualified to help her.
