My elementary school aged son has struggled with writing for years. He has a good understanding of…read morewriting concepts and grammar but gets easily overwhelmed when it comes to putting his thoughts on paper. He's starting middle school next year and my wife and I had hoped that Sylvan would be able to help him gain more confidence and work through some of the mental blocks he has when tackling writing assignments. When we signed him up for classes at Sylvan, we expected that he would receive tailored, individualized tutoring to reinforce the concepts he already knows, help build his confidence, and provide techniques and strategies for not worrying about getting it perfect the first time. Unfortunately, the lessons ended up being very boilerplate with minimal customization. The majority of each lesson was spent rehashing grammar concepts he largely already knows, and typically would only spend a few minutes on the creative process of writing. There was also significantly less one-on-one time than we expected, and he spent the majority of the time working on his own on a tablet. We hoped to discuss our concerns during our monthly meeting with the center director, but unfortunately the meetings ended up getting canceled at the last minute three times in a row so we finally just decided to pull him out at the end of the month. The staff are very nice but it certainly wasn't worth the very high cost, and I wouldn't recommend Sylvan for anyone in a similar situation to ours. Maybe it's better for older students or for students who need help with more defined, linear concepts like math or science.

They have incentive program to encourage kid to do the work at home and less time at their place. When the kids got their homework done, they earn 2 fake dollars. These dollars can be trade for toys. However, when my kids save up to 50 then they took it back when the kids was busy doing their work. This happen multiple times. I ask them to look at their surveillance and they said they did not see anything. Then they start to singled out my children saying my kid got angry at their staff and hit their staff. Both of my kids said they did not do anything. I ask them to show surveillance for their claim. They refused to. Then I stop having my kid go here and ask them to stop the automatic draft from our bank account and refund the fee for the upcoming month they already charge that we did not use. They said yes they already refunded. It turn out NOT ONLY THEY DID NOT do the refund but they continue to charge for next 3 months as of today. I'm fighting them to get them to stop the charge and refund the money they DID NOT ENTITLE TO. POSSIBLY A LAWSUIT. THIS PLACE IS A SCAM. DO NOT SEND YOU KID HERE IF YOU DON'T WANT ANY TROUBLE.
