This place is a good place to consider going for some katsu sandwiches! I got the chicken katsu with a combo upgrade (includes two scoops of salad). I got kani and potato. It also comes with choice of tea (black, green, oolong). The katsu is made fresh. I did think the size of the katsu was a bit small, but it was still good. I did try the shrimp katsu before, and I would have to say that I'd prefer the shrimp over chicken. They have other types of sandwiches, such as the fruit sandwiches. But I didn't try since I don't eat much dairy. Service is usually pretty quick and it is clean inside. There is a lot of parking! Overall, I would recommend this place if you're looking to try some yummy sandwiches!
Came in with kinda low expectations after reading the reviews, but was pleasantly surprised! Kumo was tucked away in a shopping center with lots of other restaurants and outdoor seating with unbrellas. Easy parking. We had the chicken katsu sando + $2.50 for the combo (fries and green tea). The chicken katsu is pretty decent - crispy and I liked the sauce. The fries were good too and especially the aioli it comes with. Green tea tasted homemade and was solid too. Also got the original fruit sando, which was very tasty. They didn't cut corners on the amount of fruit and we still found fruit "deeper" in the sando in the parts that weren't exposed. The grapes and strawberries were my favorite. Whipped cream was light and sweet, but not too sweet. Sweet bread was soft and tasty. Service was good and the staff was helpful but not too pushy, and brought our food out to the table outside when it was ready. Docking 1 star for the price which is a little steep for the amount of food ($11 for fruit sando and $16.50 for chicken katsu sando combo), but overall I'm happy with the taste and it is certainly a unique specialty item!

(He lived off those prime 7-Eleven sando's! iykyk) The big caveat is that it's expensive. Each sandwich is like $15, after tax and tip. But they're quality sandwiches.
I love Japanese sandwiches! I visited Kumo back in June of 2024. I tried the strawberry, chicken katsu, and egg salad sandwiches. I also got a matcha latte! Their bread was thick and fillings were loaded! They did take a while to make though- about 30 minutes! Looks they have closed down now.
These fruit sandos were amazing, I've never had anything like it! We got both kinds. Sandos were made to order and it's so fresh, light, and sweet but not too sweet! The shop itself is super small & made to just order your food and go. The service was very nice as well, the employees are very friendly. The only thing I didn't like was the green thai tea unfortunately. It tastes more like regular thai tea in my opinion which I weirdly don't really like lol

The shrimp katsu sando is perfect for a lighter flavor that still has solid pieces of shrimp and the tartar sauce and cabbage complement the golden katsu well. Apparently on this day the chicken katsu had sold out before noon - I also recommend it. The menchi katsu sando has pork and beef, so it's actually quite hamburger tasting, with a stronger American or seasoned patty flavor. Not my type since I generally don't like Italian sausage type seasoning flavor, and one half of the katsu was more tough and chewy than the other. Still nicely crispy. Potato salad didn't taste like you'd expect. Kani salad is nice. The green Thai tea is good, my friend who is a barista loved it alot. Since we got takeout, I added a little milk and honey to my unsweetened green tea and the floral around became even more delicious without bitterness. Great tea. Until next time, Kumo! I will be back. If you dine here be prepared for takeout style and outdoor plaza seating.
Not just cute! They are delicious, fresh and healthy option for me and my kids, we loved it!! The service is so nice, Don't forget to ask for a green Thai tea ;)
I was really excited to try Kumo but found it to be underwhelming. For the high prices they charge I was disappointed by how small the piece of pork in my sandwich was. The potato salad was good, nothing special. Best part of the sandwich was the bread, which was extremely soft and pillowy. Probably would not return unless the craving really hit me.
I tried 4 different sandwiches! The best one was strawberry creme. The creme was light and sweet and melded perfectly with the sweet strawberries and milk bread. Next was the chicken katsu sandwich! The meat was juicy and the sauce was good. Then was the shrimp katsu sandwich as I have never tried anything like it. Lastly was the pork katsu sandwich was a bit dry for my liking. I also tried the green thai tea as well, which personally I did not enjoy as it had no flavor. Might have been because I got less sweetness. I would come back again for the sweet dessert sandwiches if I am craving!
Located in an outdoor strip mall with a lot of food restaurants. This small shop has takeout only but there is a big shared courtyard with ample tables/seats. Each sando is made at time of order so they're super fresh, crispy and delicious. Customer service is excellent. We tried their pork katsu, chicken katsu, and shrimp sando which is our fav!
Kumo is a small Japanese sandwich shop tucked into a food hall off the west side of Mira Mesa Blvd. I had a sando craving while visiting San Diego and this definitely hit the spot. We ordered a Veggie Croquette, Egg Sando, Pork Katsu Sando, and Strawberry & Cream Sando The Veggie Croquette was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The Egg Sando was all I wanted--perfect bread with marinated golden yolk eggs and kewpie mayo. The Pork Katsu Sando had the pork cutlet with the shop's own katsu sauce and napa cabbage. Their Strawberry & Cream Sando was such a great treat at the end. It was very light, subtly sweet, with very good strawberries throughout. The shop has a counter with menus and drinks available. Outside the shop are common area tables and chairs for the food hall visitors. There was ample parking and a public restroom down the hall on the right side of the shop. You'll just need to request the code for the door. This was a great road trip meal for the drive home. I'll be going back for more next time!

Ordered four sandwiches 2 Egg Sando ($12 each) , 1 Fruit & Cream ($11) , and 1 Strawberry & Cream ($11). Our total came out to $49.57 but with the minimum of 18% tip it was around $60. The Egg Sando and Strawberry & Cream were my favorites. Can be a bit messy to eat but honestly really refreshing, not too sweet or salty. A great place to try and would recommend stopping by if you haven't had anything like this before. Is a bit overpriced in my opinion so probably wouldn't come back.

This spot is in a little food court area with cute tables with umbrellas. We came on a Saturday around 2pm and it wasn't too busy in the table area (but the shop was hoppin). The sandos took a bit to come out but no worries because it was a nice spot to sit and chat and I loved how fresh they were. The chicken katsu sando was juicy, tender, tangy, and so delicious. The egg salad sando was also so flavorful and delicious. My favorite thing was the strawberries and cream sando -- the fresh whipped cream was heavy and thick, and there were strawberries in every bite. It almost tasted like a not-too-sweet strawberry shortcake. Everything is on this incredible cloud-like milk bread that's just slightly sweet. I'm obsessed. It was expensive -- $62 for all this before tip -- but that's San Diego. It was worth it to me. We'll definitely be back to try everything and have more relaxing afternoons here.
First I would like to say I only came to get dessert so the service is pretty quick. Doesn't look like a place where you can dine in so expect to eat outside. I just ordered the Strawberry and Crème Sando and it was delicious. A tad bit messy especially because when you bite into it's get smushed but still pretty good. The crème was the highlight to the moist but satisfying bread. read more
I stopped by on a weekday for a quick lunch to go. I ordered a cold sandwich combo which consisted of half an egg salad sando and half a fruit and cream sando. I drove back the 10 minutes to work and dug into my meal. The egg salad was very good, I did add a little salt, but the consistency was nice and the sandwich was filled so much that it spilled out of the bottom. The fruit sandwich, I will be honest I was more apprehensive about. I really had just wanted strawberry but the combo only came with the regular fruit and cream. I didn't think I would like the orange or kiwi, but I was pleasantly surprised and loved it. The tea that came with it was not the best and had some floating stuff at the bottom. Considering I'd ordered a plain black tea, I'd scared me a little so I threw it away. The gentlemen who took my order was very polite and welcoming. There is. no room to wait inside so I sat at a table while waiting and when my order was ready, he brought my order to me. I would easily come back again to enjoy the sandos. read more

Cute place for sandos, although a bit expensive at $10+ for each sandwich. I wish there were mix and match combos to choose which savory + sweet sandos + appetizers I'd like to try rather than their pre-set ones. The squid karage was not a favorite of mine and felt like a weird intermediate between calamari and chicken karage, when I would have preferred to have either of those instead. The egg sando was pretty good but not as flavorful as I was hoping. The chicken katsu sando was okay! I would like to come try their sweet sandos another time read more

Tried this restaurant with a friend for a casual lunch over the weekend! There was no wait, and the workers were really friendly. I ordered the Shrimp Katsu Combo with Kani Salad and Egg Salad as my sides. It was really tasty, but the sandwiches themselves were really small - they were pretty generous with the sides though. For a total of $16.50 before tax, I felt that it was a little pricey for the portion sizes. However, this menu is really unique and definitely worth a try still! I will be back to try their fruit sandwiches :) As a side note: be prepared to takeout or eat outside since they don't have indoor seating. read more

I tried Kumo for the first time today and it was very delicious. It's definitely a hole in the wall kind of vibe. I got the pork Katsu and the strawberry cream sandwiches. The Katsu sandwich was very savory and cooked to perfection. There was just the right amount of sauce and the Katsu was very crispy which went well with the bread. They also added a little bit of shredded cabbage for extra crunch and all the flavors came together very nicely. The strawberry and cream sandwich was a good way to end the meal. The whipped cream was very light and not too sweet. I love how the bread, cream, and strawberries complemented each other. The only thing is that it took a while to make the sandwiches, but it's understandable because you have to take some time to make it look nice and pretty ! so if you are going to have a big order, you might wait for a while. I highly recommend that you eat there. There are some tables outside in a small plaza where you can eat it. I feel like if you have to take the sandwiches home, they might get a little bit soggy due to the sauce so maybe you could ask for sauce on the side, especially for the savory sandwiches. Stopped by for a weekday lunch and it's a great takeout spot. You can also sit outside if you want because there's a lot of tables in the plaza. Shrimp Katsu - the shrimp was juicy along with the inside and crispy on the outside. I loved the sauce but there wasn't much. The bread was a bit dry so with the lack of sauce, it just felt really dry. Pork Katsu - pork was crispy and the inside was not as tender as I expected. Again there wasn't a lot of sauce so with the dry bread, it felt really dry. read more
Kumo... is "okay." The price points are very high for this small shop. They just have a storefront, no seating available in the store, but plenty of seating in the area. We ordered three sandos: Pork Katsu [$13], Egg [$10] & Strawberry & Cream [$11]. Pork Katsu- it wasn't as soft, kind of still tough so it may needed more time in the fryer 3/5 Egg Sando- very nostalgic of what my mom used to make for snack so I'd give it a good 4.5/5 Strawberry & Cream- star of the show. Strawberries were good & the cream was great, but the price point is wayyy too high on it 5/5 (food wise) We were greeted upon entry & was already told they did not have chicken katsu or the shrimp sando but they had just opened about an hour-ish prior? We originally wanted the chicken sando, but settled for pork. The service was pretty slow, I guess cause they actually had to prepare everything. The bread was a little harder than expected for white plain bread. Good try, Kumo! read more

This was my first time to try out a Japanese sandwich. I ordered the egg salad sandwich and it turned out to be everything I expected. The bread was soft and slightly sweet. The egg salad was perfect with not too much mayo! I was surprised that it was actually filling. I will definitely return to checkout their other sandwiches. It was really delicious! read more

I was so excited to try this and I'm so disappointed. I ordered the veggie katsu combo with potato salad, green Thai tea and the strawberry crème sandwich. The potato salad had ZERO flavor. Even salt didn't help. The veggie katsu tasted odd. The sauce was pretty decent though. The green Thai tea had no flavor. The only thing that was ok was the strawberry crème sandwich. The staff was sweet. I won't be back :( read more
I came in during their week day happy hour special which is between 2-5pm and their sandos are reduced prices. I went for the egg salad sando which I loved! It there was so much filling which makes it all worth it of course and the seasoning was on point. It was the perfect balance between slighly salty and sweet from the milk bread. I grew up eating egg salad sandwiches and this one definitely hit the spot. Im excited to try other sandos next time! The staff was very sweet and communicative when they were not able to serve me right away but after my order was taken, it did not take long for them to put it together. There are no seats here, but there are outdoor tables for the "food court" they have at the plaza so you can still enjoy your food there. read more
Around the corner and behind the other eateries, you'll find Kumo, a Japanese sandwich shop in a food court located in Sorrento Valley. Kumo specializes in Japanese sando and follows the technique in its simplicity, ingredients and overall presentation. I ordered the Menchi katsu combo which came with a choice of two sides (egg salad and potato salad). The portions were large enough to share and the drink options were tea variations of green, black, oolong tea, etc. The staff was courteous and I appreciated our food being delivered to us at our table outside. It's important to note that Kumo is an order at the counter type restaurant and there are dining tables outside. Something to keep in mind weather-wise. read more

One star because the whipped cream was delish. But other than that.. this doesn't compare to an authentic Japanese Sando. I went to Japan a few months ago so this was a little bit of a disappointment. The price too:/ SO EXPENSIVE! Almost 12$ for this? Yikes. I drove 40 min to get here too! The presentation is not like a sando.. hardly had any fruit.. a sando should have whole strawberries and whole kiwis and this just had little pieces (hence the picture) I basically had an overpriced whipped cream sandwich. I'm sad, because I won't be coming back. read more
Been here a couple times now but this is probably the last time unless something changes. I feel like the flavor profiles are there but the execution and price point is way off. Shrimp katsu sandwich -there is barely any shrimp in the shrimp cutlet. It was like 20% shrimp, rest was some kind of filler. It was extremely unsatisfying.. i tasted more bread, more slaw and tartare sauce than shrimp. When i did get a taste of the shrimp, i kept thinking why they didnt make the entire cutlet out of shrimp? it would have been so much better and worth the increased cost compared to the other sandwiches. -the bread: this is hard to judge but it feels more dry rather than a quality japanese bread thats soft but holds its shape. It blurs the lines of staleness a bit. Chicken katsu sandwich: flavor profiles are good, chicken cook was good, but lacking seasoning/salt on the katsu Strawberry fruit sandwich - the strawberries and cream are delicious but the bread is not matching at all. I would much prefer this if it was made out of 85 degrees milk toast but sliced a bit thicker. read more

I love this place! I have been coming here multiple times since September and their sandwiches never disappoint. If you're new here and you want to try something delicious, I recommend: - Green Thai Tea drink (in the photo) - Cold Sampler Combo (in the photo) - Chicken Katsu Sando - Egg Sando - Fruit & Cream Sando - Strawberry & Cream Sando It's a small shop, so once you take your order, you will be expected to wait outside. One of the wonderful staff will walk over to you to deliver your order. There are tables right outside for you to sit on and wait. We once ordered 5 sandos but only received 4 sandos. I reached out to their Instagram DM (follow them @kumo_sd), and the owner, Messiah, responded very quickly. He was very kind and provided the best customer service to help fix the issue. He was willing to give me a refund or have his staff make us a fresh new order of the sando we were originally missing. In addition, he added 2 extra sandos for FREE to compensate for the inconvenience. I thought that was the sweetest and I was already obsessed with the sandos so of course, I accepted the offer with thankfulness. I was able to pick up the sandos on a day that worked perfect for me. The sandos are great for lunch at work or something to pick up on the way home. They do delivery through doordash or you can easily order online and pick them up at the store to beat the traffic. 10/10 recommend. There are plenty of sandwich places in sorrento valley but have you ever had a Japanese sandwich? They aren't as heavy as your typical American sub and make a great lunch. Other yelpers seem to agree that the price point of the food here is a little high. I bought 2 sandwiches one of them being a combo and paid $28 total. I know with the crazy times of inflation it's been hard for businesses but it's hard for customers too especially when certain ingredients like egg, bread, and chicken are on the relatively cheaper side. Under $10 seems like a more reasonable price for sandwiches to me but once I start seeing double digits I am hesitant and honestly the main reason why like the other reviews, won't go out of my way for these sandwiches. Don't get me wrong. The sandwiches were good. Chicken was cooked perfectly. But you can get pretty decent katsu sandwiches at a Japanese Market for cheaper. I know a lot of people love Japanese curry so I'm wondering if that is something they would be willing to incorporate in their menu to draw more people in? (Curry katsu sandwich?) I've been meaning to try this place for a long time and I finally have. The space is really small but perfect for grab and go. I got the exit sanwhich and black tea! both were amazing. The staff are really nice and my food was ready quickly! The bread was so soft and the cream wasn't runny and also wasn't too sweet. The fruit was fresh and the black tea was perfect. read more
Delicious Japanese style sandwiches. This place has so many deals attached iwth it its hard to stay away. When I went, they were giving away loaves of bread alongside their sandwiches which saved many meals for us. We got the chicken, the menchi and the fruit sandwich and honestly they were all good. Personally I would recommend doing the katsu sauce with chicken and the pickled red ginger with the menchi sandwich.
