Traditional, small Japanese restaurant located at Naschmarkt. The outside seating is ample but if it's chilly there isn't a lot of space inside at all (hence the 4 stars). The menu is quite extensive and the food was really good (I discovered edamame for the first time! Where have these soy beans been all my life?!). The service was very accommodating and helpful. Food prices were average. You can also get take away which is good to bear in mind! This place has been recommended to me by a few different people and I, in turn, will recommend it to others! Simply fantastic! This little hole-in-the-wall is some of the best authentic Japanese food in Vienna. With only 8 seats it might as well be the smallest. But who cares, the food is simply awesome. I tried the squid balls and the grilled eel which was to die for, melting in my mouth. This place has won me over already when I entered, with an empathic smile and the very friendly staff there. Kuishimbo... is roughly translated into "Glutton" or "Grubber"(someone, who really loves to eat) Parents in Japan would sometimes call their children that, to lovingly tease them. Fondly remembering my own childhood, my curiosity led me into this teenie tiny restaurant. The menu consists of everyday japanese food, which is rather common within Japan but rather rare in the western world. Natto(i dare any european to try this), Udon(in different variations), Okonomiyaki(japanese pizza), Edamame, Donburi, Korokke... to name a few. The experience of eating my first Chikaramochi Udon in a looooooong time was a sweet release for my taste buds. Btw...chikaramochi udon is my number one tip against hang overs. This very tight and typical Asian local is one of my best Viennese discoveries in a long time. The food is absolutely amazing, fresh and authentic, and you can watch the Japanese cooks preparing your dish from scratch. If you are having troubles setting your mind to what to order, don't worry the sympathic staff will help you choose between all their attractive Japanese meals. True, it is hard to get sitted inside (only 7 counter sits) but honestly it is the only negative point I can think of! Went here on lunch time and lucky enough to get a seat! The restaurant was small, with only 8 stools. Ordered the Takoyaki and Niku Udon. The takoyaki was a bit dry outside but really good inside with lots of octopus. There're 5 small balls per portion. The Niku Udon broth was light and delicious, just the way I like it! The beef is tender and sweet. The udon was served super hot (like it should), and kept warm by the ceramic bowl. Not the best udon I've ever had, but surely the best I've eaten in a while. You can ask for chili powder to add some spice to the broth (personally, I prefer the light broth and add chili rather than spicy broth). The lady owner was really friendly and helpful! Reminds me of my Japanese friends. Overall, hands down the best Japanese I've tried in Europe so far (tried in London, Amsterdam, Barcelona). Bottom line, go here! I was here quite a while ago (MUST find the time to go back! ) I found this place in a funny way. An old friend posted a picture on fb of the takoyaki she had had for lunch one day. It seemed to be a form of Asian comfort food. I had never heard of it so I was intrigued. I googled takoyaki Wien and up came this well hidden secret of a restaurant. It's a place you simply wouldn't see if you didn't have an address and a map telling you it was there, that's how small it is. The takoyaki I had there was delicious. I followed it up with agenasu which is eggplant in broth and also amazing. The people cooking and serving there are very friendly. I must go back and film the takoyaki because it looks a little like Klingon gagh in that the fish flakes are blowing around a bit in the steam. If you're curious about very authentic Japanese food, this place has to be on your list! read more

Amazing udon here! If you're looking for authentic Japanese, this is the place. I've tried a few other places around the city that were supposed to be good, but this is the only place that impressed me. Now I eat here once a week. I have a few complaints: The kitchen closes at 9pm. This place is a true hole in the wall--there are about 6 counter seats inside and 6 table seats outside, so don't bring a big group. A lot of people come on their own after work, alone, or with 1 other person. And, concerning the food, while it tastes delicious, I often still feel hungry after a full bowl of their (~9€) udon. my wife an i tried to come twice, weeks before, but the place was always crowded so we needed to postpone the much awaited dinner date. they do not take reservations. last night, finally, we got the chance to find some space in the small but feel-at-home resto (i guess a max of only about 10-15 guests have space inside). crew was very friendly and always smiling. the menu is hanging on the wall. preparation time for the food takes about 15mins. and the price list is compared to other japanese restos is just fine. as starters we choose the california maki which were really big and super delicious. my wife had the beef udon soup and i ordered teriyaki don which came with some sweet spinach on the side. everything we ordered literally made our taste buds explode due to its really authentic japanese taste. kuishimbo is by far the best authentic japanese resto for me in vienna. it even exceeded my expectations based from the reviews of other guests. two thumbs up and 5 full stars for this one! we'll be back here very soon! read more

Amazing!! The restaurant is small with little seating inside and outside, but we easily got a table around 6 pm on a Saturday night. I got a sake don and it was delicious. The sweet spinach that came as a side was also amazing. I would definitely have it again. I highly recommend this place for good Japanese food! read more

Why authentic? - There's only space for 8, evidenced by the side-to-side bar stools - The older, little Japanese lady who graciously takes your order - Piping hot food that's made basically in front of you - Really yummy udon I ordered the Agedashi Tofu and Kitsune Udon. The tiniest restaurant tucked away next to the Naschmarket, Kuishimbo is home to some really legit Japanese food. There's only space for about maybe 8 people to sit comfortably (and I use that word loosely), but I think the authentic Japanese fare is definitely worth the wait. I'm guessing that this place is family-run, just by the small mom-and-pop feel of the small space and the almost "motherly" service by the little Japanese lady who spoke a mixture of Japanese and German that sounded mostly like Japanese because of her adorable accent. Everything about this place is adorable, and it definitely gave me the war fuzzies inside. Now, the food -- I started with a Curry Croquette and had the Oyako Don as my main dish. The Don was so satisfying; the bowl wass deceivingly small, but the portions was so much bigger than expected. I only wished that there were more pieces of chicken, but it was so good that I almost didn't even mind. If you don't want to wait and fight for one of the very limited seats, take out is always an option! In the 10 minutes I waited to sit down, I saw two or three folks grab their food to-go, which is probably the smarter thing to do. But still, of course, nothing beats piping hot food straight off the stove and the great service here. read more

Ate here twice this week while I was in Wien for a conference. The first time I had chicken rice bowl and the second time I had eel rice bowl. Both were absolutely fantastic. The place has maybe 3 two-tops outside and 8 or 10 seats at counters inside, and 3 or 4 chefs are cooking in a space the size of my bathroom. Yet somehow they have a quite varied menu. I wish I'd been hungry enough to try the takoyaki, but the donburi portions are very generous. Not exactly cheap (19 euro for the eel donburi, which is the most expensive of the donburi), but well worth the price for the quality and amount of food. I'd highly recommend this place to any foreigners in town looking for a quick meal, especially if you're eating alone. I did go at 530 both times for a rather early dinner. Since they don't have much seating and they don't take reservations I'm not sure what it's like trying to get a spot at dinner rush hour. The waiter and waitress from the first and second trip both spoke at least English, German, and Japanese, and were friendly and welcoming. Prices are modest and it is located just opoosite the Naschmarkt markets so is a good option for those who have spent the day walking and are looking for some good Asian cuisine. As for the food this place surely is good- I very much like the sesame ice cream, they also serve eel which I am very fond of. Unfortunately the service can be very unattentive. In addition there will be times when you have to wait on the street outside to get a seat inside- since there are only about ten seats or so, all at the counter, in the inside. There are some tables in front of the restaurant in summer, but since this is right next to a much frequented street I would not recommend sitting there. read more

Great place to have some traditional Japanese dishes. I first ordered a salmon onigiri and the zaru soba but realizing I didn't have enough food, I also go the oyakodon. The soba and don were just like how I would've had during a lunch in Japan--pretty great. The soba was nicely cooked and then chilled, and the sweet soy sauce that came with it had a side of spring onions and wasabi, just how I like it. The oyakodon had the perfect cook on the semi-cooked egg. I wouldn't get the onigiri, though. It was poorly cooked and not something I've had in Japan--a bit mushy, no rice vineger, and salt was only applied (albeit a hefty portion) on the outside of the onigiri. I was actually quite confused, as the other two dishes I ordered were so good. But even with that big gripe, I would still give it a 5/5, espeically if you're looking for some pretty authentic Japanese dishes--just sadly not the rice balls. read more
