I've gone to my fair share of Chinese restaurants, and this place ranks squarely among the "middle…read moreof the pack." I should note that when my brother and I went to eat here, we arrived too late for the lunch buffet and too early for the dinner buffet. So, we only had the option of ordering off the menu. There were two interesting things I experienced while eating here: 1. The waiter running the bar only spoke German and English, while the one waitress we saw only spoke German and Mandarin. When my brother asked the waitress (in Mandarin) what the house specials were, she hesitated, gave a small giggle, and immediately went back to the waiter at the bar and started speaking to him in German. It was as if the waitress either didn't know or didn't want to admit the house specials. Eventually, the waitress came back and gave suggestions, but her reaction was still very strange... 2. Nan King has 3 menus: one in German, one in English, and one in Chinese. The one in Chinese has, arguably, the greatest selection (as is typical for many Chinese restaurants). Despite this, nearly all the dishes served are aimed at pleasing the German palate (which is actually what we were told). This was clear not only by the taste of the food (which wasn't bad, by the way) but also by what happened when a Chinese couple came into the restaurant during our meal. After seeing my brother and I eating there, the husband of the couple exclaimed (in Mandarin), "Oh look, there are Chinese people eating here" (because us Chinese know that a Chinese restaurant is only authentic if it has mostly Chinese people eating in it...or so we are told haha). Let's just say that the couple took a look at the menu, walked around, and eventually left without ordering. Let me be clear: The food here isn't bad, but it was fairly mild and not very adventurous. The food was also fairly pricey, though about average when compared to the other Chinese restaurants in the area. Perhaps it would have been more cost-effective to have the buffet, but either way, I left not very impressed.

Nan King is a centrally located and easily accessible Chinese restaurant in the city center. The…read morerestaurant is especially popular for its lunch buffet. In the light of my all-you-can-eat lunch experience, I can say that Nan King is a decent and value for money restaurant. Except canned or frozen fruits and strange, colorful rolls served in the name of sushi in the buffet, I enjoyed almost every kind of meat, noodle and rice specialties offered here. Rolls tasted good, too. I am fully aware that the food here is adjusted to non-Chinese palate and very unhealthy for obvious reasons (salt, fat, MSG, additives...etc), but I still like eating here when I crave Chinese food. Oh, by the way, sometimes it takes so long for the staff to renew food when it runs out or when other customers (just as they do in every other buffet-style restaurants) only eat meat products in stir fries, leaving the others a bunch of Chinese-style cooked vegetables. If you have low expectations about the food and atmosphere and want to have standardized (and one click above mediocre) Chinese food you can find in almost every Chinese buffet in Germany or Europe, Nan King is the right place to go. You won't regret, but you might leave the place with mixed feelings. :)

Namaste appears to be a hidden gem in Ippendorf, a little outside of the city center. It is a…read morefamily business run by a very nice family who, as far as I know, come from the Punjab region in India. I have always enjoyed the way they treated me as a customer-always friendly, always attentive, always kind, and always fast. True, the decoration inside is as kitsch as it could get. True, it was formerly a Greek restaurant and you can still see the remnants of it. True, it is not sufficiently ventilated inside. True, the bathroom might have been more hygienic. BUT... When one is to talk about Namaste's food, s/he should open a clean sheet and forget about all of the downsides. To start with the starters, without a doubt Namaste is serving the tastiest samosas in town. Period. Paneer pakora and vegetarian pakora tasted so good, too. Chicken pakora is, however, disappointingly mediocre. I should note that what makes those starters taste even better are the sauces served beforehand. Hausgemacht mint chutney, mango chutney and a spicy combination of vegetables (shame I don't know what it's called) make the whole experience unforgettable. If I were the business owner, I'd even sell mint and mango chutney in cans with a catchy brand name to make more money and institutionalize eventually. :) Pappadam and (butter) nan taste really good. Still, it is a mystery why they sometimes serve pappadam on house and sometimes they don't. Same applies for mango lassi-sometimes they serve it for free, sometimes they don't. About swads...I strongly recommend lamm kefte masala, lamm rogan josh, lamm korma, chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, and chicken madras curry. Indeed tikka masala and butter chicken are generally not considered as genuine Indian food but they are still worth the try. Also, I strongly recommend kefte masala for those who want to taste as if they are having a garlic sausage in a spicy sauce, and korma for those who enjoy their meat, chicken or lamb, in a sweet and creamy curry. I don't recommend lamm kadahi and Namaste India Special, especially the latter. In my opinion, especially Namaste India Special was neither Indian, not special; it was rather like a money trap. The rice served along with swads always tastes so aromatic and good. I'd say the prices are high for the food you have in Namaste's atmosphere outside of city center. Therefore, it is always better to enjoy Namaste's lunch deals or open buffet options whenever possible. Overall, I am sure no one regrets to eat at Namaste as it is one of the best (and undiscovered) Indian restaurants in town. Even a starter and a curry will convince you that Namaste is different (and better) than the rest of Indian restaurants in Bonn. :)
