    Biltong appetizer
    Yasmeen H.

We came here for a date night on our trip to London and it was worth all the praise we had heard about it beforehand. The biltong was a South African classic and a great way to start the meal. The kudu bread and seafood butter was a must try, the scallop potjie had great flavor, and the ravioli were also very good. The onglet was the meal's highlight as the meat was cooked perfectly but the sides that it came with were also outstanding. For dessert, we got both of the options on the menu and it was perfect to close the night out. The service was great and they were very friendly and attentive; we sat in their outdoor patio in the back and they were able to give us cover when a drizzle started in our meal. Each of the tables had blankets for customers to use outside as well if they got cool in the breeze.

My family and I, are visiting from New York,…read moreand were excited to try this Nigerian restaurant in London, recommended by a local family member. As a Caribbean family with Ghanaian roots, we were really looking forward to it. They charge high prices for low quality service. When we ordered our drinks, the waitress got it wrong, and our daughter's soft drink took about 20 minutes to arrive. Even the ice came much later. In addition, we were initially told that they did not have goat meat, so we ordered oxtail. However, after waiting for forty-five minutes for our food, we were then told that goat meat was indeed available and would be ready in a few minutes. Those few minutes turned into another 15 to 20, and when the food finally arrived, it was the wrong order, and the meat was tough. It was clear that the young waitstaff were unprepared and overwhelmed even though there were only 5 tables. In total, we waited an hour and forty-five minutes for our food, and the overall experience left us disappointed and frustrated. We do not recommend this resturant and we will not be returning.

I'm surprised--and yet, oddly delighted--to be the first Yelper to review this delicious gem of a…read moreNaija Londoner landmark. For my compatriots, what I'm about to write is a given, but for less-experienced eaters who may be misinformed, the grilled morsels of impeccably-spiced suya are Nigeria's true national food, and Alhaji is a gifted gourmand of this street-food classic. When you can visit a website that competently describes the difference between tozo beef suya and it's drier cousins in lamb and chicken, you know you're working with a winner. Better still that your purveyor is one of the brethren of Mecca, as denoted by his Alhaji status, and you know you're likely in the hands of a well-born son of Nigeria's Hausa-speaking Northern region, where suya originated. The presentation is humble and hygenic, wrapped in neat butcher's paper as opposed to the more familiar cladding od yesterday's news rags. That's the sort of attention to detail that gets you excited, and the servings themselves do not disappoint. Portions veer towards the generous without being overwhelming, and the well-sealed packs of yaji spices that accompany the meals--a unique blend of powdered peanuts, cayenne pepper and other mysterious ingredients crucial to traditional suya--can be added to your own taste. I found that half the pack created the perfect fiery counterpoint to sweet chunks of tozo, marbled with necessary fatty veins. Veterans of Naija street suya will want to go the whole metaphorical hog, but amateurs should proceed with caution. Alhaji Suya delivered their food promptly and brought some joy to my homesick heart during a brief visit to London. It won't be my last time, and if it's your first, you won't be disappointed.

New review from Nov 2019:…read more This is my second visit here and far more disappointing. The reason is the waiter/owner was grumpy and when I asked for a takeaway box for the moyin moyin he actually scowled! Wow. The moyin moyin is quite flavourful but the jollof rice is a real disappointment. I've had far better in Ghana. Two years ago: I popped into here for lunch around 1:30pm today and whilst the owner could have been friendlier in greeting me (a smile doesn't hurt ya know), I appreciated him coming outside the restaurant to hand me my takeaway food where I had waited in the lovely sun for my order. The interior is quite small with only a couple of tables with lovely African sculptures all around. There is chalkboard of specials along with the regular menu. Sadly the sweet potato balls were sold out so I got the moin moin and the spinach stew. All together less than a tenner. There are four pieces of moin moin, which are just deliciously savoury. I recommend eating them with the nonspicy spinach stew with melon seed, which, whilst not delicious, was tasty and filling. It would be perfect on a cold winter night. If I was in the area, I would return just for the moin moin!

A Cameroonian place in London... Home away from home, couldn't be happier!…read more The Maestro has everything I miss from home, and is the perfect place to go with my Cameroonian pals when we need our big dose of home food. Everything: from Ndole to plantain fries, Chicken DG to Pepper soup (not for me though, intolerant to chili), there's everything to make us happy. It's African food, so please be patient. It takes time and you'd better not be starving when you go there. African nights tend to be quite long and boozy! :) Service wise, here again it's the perfume of Cameroon. That warmth and family touch has no equal. I know I am being subjective and some expressions may be "unwelcoming" to non-Cameroonians, and I get that. But still, this is home. With its good and bad sides, and that's why we like it. The waiter who greets you with no smile, then brings you first drink with a quarter of a smile, then the second with half a smile, then your starter, and finally a full smile when you eat the main... When it's time to hit the desert, you're so full and happy that you talk to her like your sister. Sounds strange, doesn't it? But again, that's home! They regularly have live bands playing weekends. The Maestro becomes quite literally the first stop of the night: whiskey from 6 to 9, then dinner until 11, then whiskey again until 1-2 ish before hitting an African club in Peckham or Camberwell... The Maestro has it all and just gets it. If you want a Europeanised restaurant with African food, turn around and go somewhere else... But If you want to experience a bit of Cameroon with no filter whatsoever, exactly the way it happens in some streets of Douala or Yaounde, then you are at the right place!

The food was absolutely amazing 10/10 but the only thing that threw me off a bit and made me a little uncomfortable was the customer service. Maybe it's just because I'm an American and the culture there is different because I have noticed it with a lot of restaurants in the UK, but the servers/workers are not too friendly whether the store is busy or not and everyone we tried speaking to, to get an understanding of how to order at the restaurant (since it was our first time here) kind of gave us attitude or acted like it was so annoying to ask simple questions?? Our food ended up taking more time to get ready because we didn't understand the whole call, bill, and cancel method of ordering which we tried to ask but didn't get an answer straight away. The person who finally addressed it was kinda rude about it.. Anyways, the decor inside the restaurant was really nice and it truly does give an upscale sort of vibe which is cool, but I feel like in the near future I'd prefer to just order for carry out rather than sitting inside the specific location we went to just because the food is so good but the customer service just was not it. However I've heard that different locations sometimes have better customer service so.. ‍

Suya is chargrilled meat, and at Presidential Suya they have meat from many of our furry friends, from beef to chicken to KIDNEY. I didn't try the kidney. Nevery having had suya, I just asked, "What should I get?" Everyone, from the mom and daughter working behind the counter to the rotund hanger-about, suggested beef. So beef I got. After heating it up in the microwave, the daughter patiently explained to me that suya is spicy (as she poured more spice powder onto my meat) and should be eaten with onions and tomatoes. Except, all they had were onions. She cut those up and wrapped my meal in some paper and I took it away. I really liked it. It's barbecue beef, a little thick, and very tender. Plus, it's super spicy but a kind of spice i'm not used to. I gave only three stars because of the lack of tomatoes and the price (£4 for a hand-size piece of meat). The people there are wonderful.
