My hair has been looking quite shabby and I needed a haircut. I've had bad luck with haircuts my entire life....so much that I dread it more than going to the doctor's. I finally found a place that does my hair so well every time that I've been going there for 3 years. That place is Raiz. I see Hitomi about 3 times a year for about $80/cut including tip. Unfortunately, I've been unemployment for the last 6 months and can't afford that luxury. The thought of having to try a new place set butterflies in my tummy...eek! I thought about going to K's in McCully because Ethan T's review was so good but he's a guy! Who knows how they would handle a girl's hair haha. My friend suggested KS hair studios and her hair looks gorgeous so I thought I'd give it a try. It's right before Tsunami's on S King St on the right side and there's meter parking right in the front. The salon is pretty roomy and very clean. The hairdresser, whom I didn't get her name, was very friendly. She asked me what I wanted and I told her I wanted a lot of volume because my hair is so thin. I'm so envious of full bodied haired girls!! Anyway, she blow dried my hair first (no shampoo) and went right into cutting. I think if you wanted a shampoo you can request it but I just washed my hair so no need. Her hands were very skilled and fast. I could tell she knew what she was doing! Within 20 minutes, my new fobby Korean hair was done AND with lots of volume!! I came straight out of a Korean drama! Interesting how fobby Japanese hair can be differentiated from fobby Korean hair. It's a little hard to explain on paper but you can just tell. I liked it because not only did it look good, it was a slightly different look for me. The owner told me she learned how to cut hair in Korea and had the salon for 8 years already!! How did I not see this store before? Then came time to pay and it was only $25!!! How awesome to have such a great hair cut for under $30!!! So what if she didn't shampoo my hair or give me a massage!! I just wanted a haircut. And what more, I have about an hour left of the time I allotted for this haircut, since Raiz takes forever, to go eat! I highly recommend this salon for those who like fobby styles. I've been going to Nami for about 2 years. Nami is primary Korean speaking but understands some English... enough English to cut your hair ;). It's best you bring a picture to show her what u want. I honestly I'm not too picky with hair cut, I usually ask for trim, layers & volume and every time I've gone there she had delivered. I really like the way she cuts your hair and at a reasonable price too. Women's hair cut, wash & style is $35. She also uses scissors to cut & layer your hair, where as other place I've been they use a razor comb to layer your hair, which leaves you with a lot of split ends. Pretty much had a bad experience right from the start. Came in here on a whim and was immediately greeted by the loudest little dog I've ever heard. The thing was barking at me from a distance for half a minute before the lady had him under control. She barely understood me so I caved and just told her to cut it however she wanted as long as it was short. After a 10 minute cut, she asked if it was good and it seemed like it was from my view, so I paid her and left ($16 and $4 tip). When I got home I decided to do a full inspection and noticed that she literally left uneven cuts making it look like I had many patches of longer hair all around the back of my head (the part I couldn't see in the mirror). She didn't line up my side burns and didn't even bother to straighten up my hairline on my neck. TL:DR: she cut my hair the way she saw fit (on my request). It looked good from my view in my seat while getting it cut. Got home and noticed that my sideburns were not even, so I did a full inspection and found that she cut my hair unevenly and left various (small but noticeable) patches of longer hair all on the backside of my head. read more

Anyone who's read my reviews knows I'm super picky about my hair cut. I know it's a short hair cut, but my hair is thick and grows in different directions and every barber I've ever had said that for a short cut, it can be tricky...moving on. You also know, that in my reviews I'm quick to point out my bad experiences as well as my good ones. Recently, I went to Aiea to get my hair cut. When I sat down Phuong asked me if I remembered Tammy? I said yes. Tammy had actually cut my hair once at a different shop some time ago. She told me they were sisters and that Tammy works in town. See, I recently moved to Makiki and I have been taking the bus to Aiea to get my hair cut because we only have one car. She suggested I go see her, because it would be more convenient for me. At first I wasn't sure what to think. But I think it's amazing that she was willing to give up a customer of more than a year, because it would be more convenient for me! Then I remembered about my previous hair cut from Tammy, and decided to give it a shot. I was not disappointed. It was a great hair cut that lives up to my high standard, it's closer to my house, and although it's a little more expensive than Aiea, it's still cheaper than all the bad cuts I've paid for all over the island. I'm super stoked Tammy is at KS and that it's a brief walk from our place. I finally found a place to get my hair cut in town and don't have to spend half my Saturday trekking back and forth. I've been hunting all over for an affordable stylist who knows what they're doing. Maintaining a pixie cut can get really expensive, so I'm glad I found this place! The owner is very quick and skilled, the shop is clean and the price is unbeatable! I ended up paying $21 plus tip for a shampoo, cut, and style. I was in and out in 20 minutes and my hair looked great when she was done with it. At this rate, I'll be back every month for a touchup, and I recommended it to all my friends. read more

I LOVE this place. It was the first place I went to get my hair cut after I moved from the mainland. I always enjoy finding local places that are affordable and do good work- sometimes that can be a hard combination to find. However, this place has thoroughly impressed me. I've gone here for two different cuts with a different style each time. Each time they were very welcoming and friendly. There was a positive vibe throughout as well. It was an older building, etc. but that is part of the charm. My hairdresser each time provided a lot of care to my hair. I would totally recommend this place to anyone. I have about medium length hair and get a high fade haircut every 10 days. I was in the area for work and got a great haircut. The stylist was Nami. She shampooed my hair first to get the pomade out then cut it and styled it after all for $20. I brought in a picture of exactly what I wanted done and she did it perfectly. I definitely recommend bringing in a picture of the cut you'd like, also This is a salon mostly catered to women so they don't use a single razor blade around the edges read more

DO NOT COME TO THIS SALON. I had made an appointment over the phone out of a whim to get my hair done. I talked to Nami. She told me to come at 5. She did not seem to speak English well, so I had made sure to bring a picture. I asked for a wave/loose perm. I asked if it was possible and kept pointing at the picture. Nami kept on saying yes yes yes. She seemed very nice and the visit was actually very pleasant. When Nami took the rollers out of my hair, it looked great. My hair was still wet but I could see some loose waves in it. She proceeded to blow dry my hair, but she did not blow dry it all the way. I do not ever get my hair done so I thought maybe it was just getting late, so I payed and thanked her. With tip, the bill came out to $146. After I went home, about 2 hours later when my hair had dried completely, I had noticed that the waves in my hair were gone. My hair had looked like nothing had been done to it. my hair looked completely straight. I am not exaggerating when I say this. I have pictures to prove it. I came back to the salon a couple of days later and showed her how my hair looked like, and asked for a refund. I asked her for the amount of $126 and she could keep the $20 tip that I gave her. She said no, she could not give me a refund, but she have to "try again" and I have to come back for her to "try again". I told her that I was willing to do that if she can guarantee that my hair will come out how I want it (how do I know that she won't just do the same thing again?) she then proceeded to tell me that my hair is very long and for her to do my hair the way I want it it would cost $400 and she would have to use a different machine. By this time, I was already very frustrated. She should have told me this before she took an attempt at my hair. I told her I just want my money back. She then told me that $126 is nothing and that if I went to another salon and spent that much and my hair came out the way I wanted, she will refund me. (she spoke broken English but I understood her tone very well) ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Finally, she told me that I had to pay her for the hours she spent on my hair plus the chemicals. I actually was going to comply with this, I asked her so how much would I get back? She could not give me an answer. I then asked If I could speak to an English speaking person. She told me to go ahead and sit and wait, I asked her how long? She said "I don't know, maybe an hour". At this time, I had to go to work. So I left and told her I will call and talk to another person that speaks English fluently. I called her back that same day and she recognized me right away. She said that she was busy and asked for my number. I asked her when will the person be in, she just hung up on me! I finally received a call from a english speaking person who asked to hear my side of the story. I told her exactly what happened. She kept saying " I understand you are upset that your hair did not came out exactly the way you wanted" and kept telling me that Nami has been doing hair for 13 years and she is a very good hair stylist. Apparently they were not even going to pay me back any of my money and expect me to go back so she could "try again" yet they won't guarantee that what happened to my hair won't happen again. This person also told me that I can never have hair like the pictures of the celebrities and that even if I perm my hair , I'd still have to style it to look like the celebrities hair. She obviously didn't understand that I did not want celebrity hair. Simply some loose waves in my hair that any competent hair stylist should be able to do. So I sent her a picture of my hair the same night after the perm , which looked completely straight, and the picture of what I wanted. I understand that you can never duplicate someone else's hair style completely, but Nami did not even came close to what I wanted. The waves fell out within a couple hours of me getting it permed! The english speaking person told me to Send the picture and she will talk to Nami about it again. I have yet to hear from them. I am frustrated, I feel robbed and very offended by the way I have been treated. Everybody makes mistakes, even professionals that have been in the industry for a long time. I don't feel like anyone should be rewarded for their mistakes, $146 may not be that much to you Nami, but I shouldnt have to pay $146 for nothing and I don't deserve to be put through that whole process again. read more

First time here and it was a great experience. I believe the stylist was Nami the owner. She was the only one there. I just showed her a picture and she was so fast in cutting my hair. She knew what I wanted without me having to say a word. She also gave me a shampoo and a little gel to finish. All this for $16.00. I will certainly be back. read more
