I got to live out a fantasy of mine. Going to a nice hole in the wall cafe in a small cobblestreated European town eating outside the cafe with a nice pastry and coffee. What a life! This is coming from an Asian American who came here as a tourist, so I did the most tourist thing ever and ordered what I knew Austria and Germany was famous for, an Apple strudel. And I'm glad I did because that apple strudel was the best I had on my trip there. I am not a desserts person, so take my view of this pastry with a grain of salt, but I felt that apples were of good quality, the pastry itself did not feel overwhelmingly sweet even with the sauce that comes on the side with. Strrudel Cafe Kroll in Innsbruck was a nice little Cafe with delicious strudels and pastries. My issue I had was not having the option to sit down and eating after ordering from the register. I wasn't asked if it was to go or not. To sit down and eat, you have to sit down to order. I guess it's an European thing but this was the first. Damn. This place is awesome. It is located in the middle of old town of Innsbruck. You can choose between sitting outside or inside. Sitting outside will give an amazing view in the centre with lots of tourist walking by. Chose to sit inside and its ambiance was superb, and its service was awesome as well. Strudel dough has a reputation for being difficult. After kneading an un-yeasted dough, it is rolled out and stretched so thin you can read a newspaper through it. The challenge is in achieving an even, thin dough without any holes. Most people prefer to skip the anxiety of making a strudel dough, but not in Austria, and not in Cafe Kröll. As an Austrian food snob who lived in Innsbruck for a few months and got to taste real, homemade apfelstrudel, I can only say that Cafe Kröll is not just a tourist trap in old town, it's actually very good. There is a wide variety of strudel to taste, from savory to sweet and all are delicious and well done. Service is fast and they are open at 6 AM which is always a plus But if you do happen to stop by that early, don't be confused about all the trucks and cars parked in random spots in front of restaurants and shops! The strudel portion was large with thick pieces of apple but we got it to go because there were no seats and there was never an offer to warm it so it honestly didn't taste great. Cute Strudel cafe in the center of town. We came here for a quick snack before our flight back home- the huge amount of pastries in the window just made us go in almost automatically. So we sat down and ordered a salty strudel first - mine was with beef and potatoes and was pretty good, came with a little salad and dressing on the side. My friend had something else (think it was spinach and feta) - but she wasn't very impressed by it. On the sweet section we had a bit more success- the apple strudel was very good and came super hot just like we asked. We also had cremeschnitt cake which was very good once we put away the weird glazing layer on top of it - much better without it! My friend had a great walnut strudel, which looked smelled and tasted great. The service was excellent- our waiter was nice and patient, and even gave us recommendations.. Which is not very common to do around here The prices are not low but tourist-reasonable. The design is very nice and cozy, it's also pretty crowded.. Once a table leaves someone else sits almost immediately, so be patient if you'll have to wait a little- there are not so many tables. I must be honest though... wasn't knocked off my feet foodwise but it was tasty and well made, guess it's not the best in town.. and yet- had a really good experience and maybe I'll get here again to try one of the other strudels- there was a lot to choose from! read more

There is a backroom with several tables and bar-style service aligned with the entrance wall (Austrian style, much like croissants and tables on the side-walk are for me the French style). Just giving three stars as we only went here for coffee. My espresso hit the spot and the cappuccino my partner had looked satisfactory. However the Strudels did look good and when we did walk past again in the afternoon on a Saturday the place was packed. Also the staff do speak English - I watched one of the waiters serve a group of Americans. We came to this strudel cafe for breakfast a couple mornings, as it was open everyday and it was open early (i.e. before we headed out for hikes). You can order takeout at the front or try to score one of several small tables in the back of the cafe to sit down at. When we were there early in the morning, getting a seat was no issue at all; when we showed up a little later (around 8:30 AM or so), we had to wait ~5 minutes or so to be seated. I can imagine this to be variable, as there are definitely some folks who are taking their time and being a bit more casual. It's cozy in the back, but otherwise not too distinctive of an ambiance outside of the numerous times we heard 'Despacito' playing on their playlist. The waitresses were quick to take our order and bring our food out, but we usually had to track them down in order to get our bill. Although this is indeed a strudel shop, the savory strudels here that we had were quite average. I went with the meat and potatoes strudel for our first visit here, and it was quite bland...it definitely had enough carbs to load me up on energy before setting out on our hikes, but the beef was barely noticeable, and there was definitely a deficiency of salt as well. The dish I did like much better was the simple ham and eggs that is served on the breakfast menu. Simply put, you get a hot skillet served with two sunny-side up eggs (that eventually get cooked to over-medium from residual heat), served with a bit of ham on the side. The meat was quite good, and mixed in with the eggs, it was a lighter and much more flavorful breakfast experience than the strudels we had. I would come back again, largely because there are a number of items I did not get to try, particularly any of the sweet strudels (or other pastries as well, which looked quite appetizing). At the worst, you will come out of the experience with a full stomach. read more

Four stars for the service, because the man helping us was not very helpful. He did not care that another lady had cut in front of me in line and spent 15 minutes with her. The apfel strudel, however, was absolutely DIVINE. The apples had a slight tart to it but the filling was sweet enough to compliment it perfectly. The crust was flaky, pulling the whole pastry together. My fiance and I ended up taking a second one to-go so we could enjoy it that evening. I found it weird that no one here spoke english and that they didn't accept credit cards, despite being in a very heavy tourist area, but that's just a minor inconvenience. The real disappointment was the strudels themselves. We ordered an apple one and a cheese/jam one. Sadly, neither were very good. We had them warm and they were really not that tasty - we expected a lot more from the "best in town". Honestly, we preferred the strudel we got from Spar for 1.50 euro the next day - it was bigger and more delicious, so I recommend saving some money and just getting something from the grocery store. read more

Terrible service, overrated food. There were two staff working in the shop at the time when we visited there but none of them seemed to care about us and they just kept chatting amongst themselves. We had no choice but seated ourselves and started looking at the menu. Still no one has came to us so we finally walked up to the counter and tried to place the order with one of them, the lady staff. I was still being patient and polite and told her that we were ready to order. She didn't say anything and immediately turned her head and asked her colleague, the male staff to help us instead. He was acting all weird and being sarcastic during our conversation. Anyway we finally placed the order and I saw our strudels were ready and waiting at the counter. Though she didn't serve them to us right away but she waited and made the male staff to bring them to our table which it was about 5-10 mins later. Of course, our strudels were already cooled off and very much tasteless. I still have no idea why she couldn't just brought them to us when they were still hot and fresh. Not to mention the place wasn't busy at all when we visited there. We strongly dislike this place as there was no reason whatsoever why we should being treated like that. Terrible! read more
