When we go home for a visit we have to stop in for a kreckles burger. Now I know you're probably wondering if she has to stop on every trip why the 3 stars. Well I am so glad you asked! The service isn't the best any more. They are not very friendly and make you feel like you're bothering them. No service with a smile at all. Where do I even start. Walked inside, about 5-6 people working the front. Ordered 1 Lemon milkshake and 1 chocolate Malt, at about 6:45 she kinda called out our order. As we watched nobody acknowledged it nobody started it. 3 other couples came in ordered and walked out with food. The lady who took our order asked 2 times did you make my shakes?? The lady who was supposed to make them realized she left her phone in the bathroom.. she frantically ran to get it came back in and walked around a few minutes.. made herself a drink and sandwich and proceed to go take a break asking us to move out of her way on her way to sit down. Then the lady who took outlr order asked ... Great burger and fries place. Smash style burger. Cheap and tight on meat and extras. The place retains the almost psychotic frugality of the old man that opened the original back in the war days. The west store is clean and comfortable along with the new north side store. Very nice. The hamburger meat in the north side seems to be mostly soy meal mix. Noticeably different than the other stores. I don't care for it at all. read more

Grew up eating Krekel's and, if I'm lucky, this will be my last meal on Earth, complete with a lemon ice cream. For those of you who haven't ever tried this Decatur delicacy, it's pretty simple: small balls of beef, smashed on to a griddle. They might add a little butter, but I cannot confirm. The end result? A thin, crispy patty that tastes like perfection. It's not unusual to order a double or even triple, since the burger itself comes out very thin. My regular order: double cheese, ketchup and mustard. This time? I added pickles. All that Bay Area living has made me a fancy pants :) Fries are so-so, but if you're dining in just go ahead and get them. Add lots of salt 'cause at this point we know no one's going for healthy. The highlight of your Krekel's experience has to be their ice cream. Vanilla, chocolate, Lemon and a few other flavors unbeknownst to me since those are the only ones I order. Soft serve in a cone or a shake, either way is a mouthful of heaven. Oh, Krekels! I can't believe no one has reviewed Krekel's. It's a Decatur institution! This small town chain has the best burnt smushed burgers in Illinois., It's a walk up stand (except the location on Oakland near Millikin) where you place your order for a Krekel burger and a shake. It's a great hangout on a summer night after chillin at Nelson Park. The ice cream rocks, too. I have fond fond memories of nights with my family at Krekel's. The guy who owns it has a funny car with a chicken that he drives around town. Update: I just googled and it sounds like the guy that owned Krekels and drove the car passed away recently :( I miss Krekels. Nothin' like that in So cali where I live now. read more

It's a fast food place with delicious food that's horrible for you! Service and food are great and I have never been disappointed. I try to stop at least once a month when in Decatur. They do not have a lot of vegetarian options in my opinion and probably nothing vegan. Go all out and wash your burger and fries down with a milkshake. read more

I've had about everything on the menu at Krefeld on Oakland. The reason for three stars is the chili isn't that good and the tenderloin sandwich is dry, usually over cooked and bland at best. You have to kill it with condiments for any flavor at all. Fries are always good. As for the workers most of them are friendly, but you still have a few that are just there , to take up space. Smooshed burgers!! How have I not reviewed this place?? Major oversight. I don't know what they do to these burgers to make them all crunchy on the edges and so ridiculously delicious (I sense a fair amount of butter is involved), but Krekel's holds a very special place in my heart... and belly. No trip to/through Decatur is complete without a meal at Krekel'ss. Also quite tasty are the lemon shakes. I have 2 things to say about Krekel's. It's over rated, and full of grease. They get the thin burger part right, but they get the greasy part wrong. The burgers there have no taste other than grease. The buns are soggy, anything extra you put on it is covered up with the taste of grease. It was nasty. The fries aren't a different story either. Their desserts however, low priced, but best quality. I got a sundae for $4 or so, and I would honestly pay $6 or 7 for that and still be satisfied. Biggest down side to Krekel's is that they do not take card. read more
