Y'all probably wonder, why on earth does a bald dude check-in to barber shops so often? Is this dude cray cray? Well, I'm crazy alright. But I'm crazy about my beard and I can't seem to trim it perfectly at home. That's why. I take great pleasure in trying out a new barber. I mean, some cats like to get their kicks on the slope at Park City and some cats like to get their adrenaline rush skydiving. I like the thrill and adventure of a barber I've never met who knows little to nothin' about my hair, other than what they see. In this particular case, Savannah is the perfect example of what every man needs in their life. She has excellent communication skills and I think she'd agree, that part of that skill set is listening too. We had a quick chat about what the end game was and she walked me through the steps she was going to take, so we both understood the plans. I love it. She took her time and was very thorough and thoughtful about my preferences and gave some solid advice that helped me fix the area that needs some growth and time. Her straight edge skills are second to none. I've had cold, sharp steel dragged across this pretty face dozens of times. More times than I can count, I knew I was gonna have red face, red marks and or blood drops when I opened my eyes. As Savannah manipulated that sharp edge on my face, I could barely feel it gliding. It was spectacular. So, we started chatting about a proper professional shave and that's her specialty, as luck would have it. Not a lot of barbers love that part of the game. That's an acquired skill set for sure and there are few things in the barber world greater than a professional shave. I'm a big BIG fan of this wonderful woman and she's extremely experienced, professional chatty and as real as it gets. Walked in, was greeted warmly by Freddy and D. Beowulf the shop dog was unimpressed, lol. Chris showed up about 5 min after me and 10 min later I was in the chair. Pretty straight forward crew cut with a skin fade, trim the top. He hit a home run! The straight razor finish tells the quality of a classy joint vs. the rest. Great vibe, nice conversation. I felt welcomed and at home as soon as I sat down on the long wood bench. Much different than then usual nervousness of a new-to-you shop where people don't really acknowledge you. Cool art work, rough around the edges, and Freddy's tool box make this place wicked. I don't live in SLC, however, next time I visit, I'm getting a hair cut; straight razor shave too! Having no history with any barber the appointment software assigned me to Samson. I love technology. Samson was great. I knew it was hard to tell how I like my hair since it was so overgrown, but the cut was amazing. You'd expect that, right? Visiting from California and needed a quick fade. I made the mistake and went to Super Cuts for a simple medium fade but they F it up so bad...my girlfriend almost slept on the couch that night. Did my research and decided to travel to Kraken from all the good reviews. Indeed. Good things started to happen right off the bat; D (the owner) took me in right away and I explained to him how Super Cuts gave me the patchy dog haircut. He looked at it, sat me down, and worked his magic. I'm from the Bay Area and we got our fair share of barber shops. For me, it's obvious if someone got bars or not. D got bars with them clippers. We also had a good conversation and learned a few places to visit in Utah. I'm glad I came here and will come back again during snow season. For the cut I got, it's easily $40-50 in the Bay. D charged me the same price from Super Cuts ...I said, "yooo wtf?" In my head. To top it off, I ain't even got any hair poking my neck as I am typing this. Finally! I have found a great barber in SLC! After bouncing around to a couple barbers & being disappointed by their skills, their attitudes, or just the overall experience, I put my trust in Yelp and found D at Kraken Barber Shop. Thank god. It took me a minute to figure out where this place is, but it's inside (back, left corner) of the 'Image Studio' near Wal Mart. The building essentially rents out a bunch of little rooms to barbers, stylists, masseuses, and the likes. Anyway, back to the Kraken! Super nice guy, very easy to talk to, gives a killer haircut without having to double check with you every 3 seconds. I highly recommend you check it out. One of my walk in sessions was with Freddie and the other was with Savannah and they were both professionals. Perfect for your teen (or tween)! We trek to Fort Union from downtown because Kraken really is the best. Over the last year or 2, he has had a cut by just about every barber here and every time says it's the best cut he's ever had. They are good at helping him articulate what he wants and he's learning the language of men's haircuts - haha! Also even though this is clearly not a kids place these guys are conscientious and always quick to change the music/tv if it's not "child appropriate". I've been looking for a long time for a place that knew how to properly trim my beard and make it look great, this is the place! Chris was incredibly nice and asked me what I was looking for and even though I wasn't 100% sure he was able to understand the direction I wanted him to go in and then honed it in and made my beard look amazing! He was able to blend it perfectly with my haircut and gave my beard the shape and volume that it needed. I cannot recommend this place more highly! I'm not one to usually write reviews but Jacob at Kraken blew me away. The atmosphere, the quality, the conversation, never before have I been so impressed with a barber. He also gave me a straight razor shave, now I have never been able to or have gotten shaved without having at least 10 cuts, I have very sensitive skin. I always feel kinda bad for bringing a kid into a barbershop but a parent can only stand by and watch so many bad haircuts. Kraken was amazing.
