a plate of food on a table

Kotoyama is a nice little cozy steakhouse. It's had a open but surprisingly intimate style to it. Our waiter was the only one working the floor and even still he was courteous and attentive. We had very little wait at all for our food. Speaking of food. It was delicious and on point. The steak my husband order was cooked perfectly how he liked it. And the crunchy rolls were surprisingly sweet but wonderful none the less. Over all we will definitely be coming back to have some more!

Great food full of flavors! Hibachi is good and sushi rolls are made fresh. Best hibachi in town with a peaceful atmosphere.

Late review: We…read moretraveled to Lake Charles and had planned to sample some carnival/fair food at the Louisiana Pirate Festival. However, the food choices were very limited. We researched restaurants in the area, but most were closed or had limited hours on a Sunday. Umami was the only restaurant with good reviews that was open at the time. The food was ok. It was definitely better than Hana Japanese Sushi Bar & Grill in Natchitoches, but not as good as Geisha Sushi Bistro in New Orleans. We ordered: Tuna tartare Spicy tuna roll Spicy salmon roll Hamachi nigiri Tuna nigiri Steamed shumai There's 24 photos that should be posted with this review.

Starting with the atmosphere -- when we were seated, the table was noticeably sticky, which immediately set the wrong tone. The overall space felt dated, and several tables showed visible wear, including warped wood. It gave the impression that maintenance and upkeep may not be a priority. We decided to move forward and hope the food would make up for it. The quality itself wasn't terrible, but it wasn't memorable either -- fairly average and not something we'd go out of our way for. The biggest issue was the portion size and service flow. The sushi arrived in very small increments -- two pieces at a time -- with long pauses in between. It made the meal feel disjointed and unnecessarily drawn out. For the price point, the portions were extremely small, and I actually left hungry, which rarely happens. For three people, the bill ended up being over $125 (including a couple of beers), which felt steep considering the portion sizes and overall experience. I understand how challenging the restaurant business can be, and this isn't written to be harsh -- just honest. There's potential here, but improvements in cleanliness, presentation, portion sizing, and service pacing would make a significant difference. With several dining options in the area, I would likely explore other restaurants during our stay.

The vegetables and rice were very good and I enjoyed the salad which was green leaf and not just iceberg. I also ordered the melon tuna which was a piece of tuna on top of watermelon (nicely ripe) with a slice of jalapeño on top. It was something different and I really liked it. Again the filet was disappointing, I wouldn't order it again. But everything else was great!

The service is also fast, though not perfectly attentive. The food is mediocre. It's sushi in Beaumont, so you have to curb your expectations, as the fish in East Texas is never great. We went with cooked rolls and they were tasty - the Cajun crawfish and the eel rolls are good choices. I would recommend avoiding the steak. I really enjoy Japanese steak skewers, which are usually made with good cuts of high quality beef. I expected nothing less in East Texas, but the skewers here are absolutely foul. I had two bites, both tasted like old urine. Additionally they were overcooked. I couldn't stomach any more than two bites. I would have come back for just cooked sushi but in addition to the bad steak, the restroom smells strongly of raw sewage, which the restaurant tries to mask with spray. There are unfinished toilet holes where I assume this stench is coming from. Very off putting.

I travel all over the country for my job been to every state multiple times I try to sample sushi everywhere I go except for areas far away from the ocean. This place is definitely not traditional Japanese but more of an American lounge fusion but it works. The people very nice and friendly and talkative but the food was what was amazing. I usually go straight for sashimi maybe a sushi roll and forget about all the fixings. But at this place even the salad and the soup that always comes with the sushi dinner was out of this world! It was all I could do to finish my dinner. Not sure the next time I'll be in Port author Texas but when I am I will definitely come back here.

No clue what this is. It came from a tub or vat? Not stuffed avocado, halved not even out of the Rhine.

So we made plans to come here for Dinner before heading back into Houston. When we arrived, it was a little before dinner time so the place wasn't packed at all. We had told the host that we might have around 12 people coming in for dinner and we got a table with no problem. After we had been seated, we found out that only 8 people was going to dine in and that wasn't an issue. I ordered the Obe Rolls and the Crunchy Rolls as appetizers and decided to go with the Banzai Special for my entree. Between the Obe Rolls and the Crunchy Rolls, I much preferred the Crunchy Rolls. I thought it tasted pretty good. As for my entree, I thought it was pretty good but it has been cooked more medium well than medium, which was what I had requested. But other than that, everything was good. And on top of that they give you a lot of food. As for the service, we had one waiter serving all of us. And he didn't miss a beat! Empty soda glass? He was quick with the refills. Needed to order something else? He was always around. Dirty plates, he would come to pick them up. Frankly, I was a bit skeptical about the service after quickly perusing what other Yelpers had to say about this restaurant, but I was glad that my experience was a good one. I don't live in the area so it's very unlikely that I'll be coming back here anytime soon. However, if I'm ever in the area and my friends want to dine here, I wouldn't hesitate to go back.

We're a family of sushi lovers, and owners Macy and Eric never miss a beat when it comes to delivering fresh, flavorful goodness. You'll find them in the food court at Parkdale Mall, and trust me... they're worth the stop. I ordered my usual favorite, the Obe Roll --a perfectly rolled beauty stuffed with spicy crab meat and shrimp, then drizzled with just the right kick of sriracha. One of my granddaughters went for the fried California roll, filled with avocado, cream cheese, and crab meat--crispy, creamy, and absolutely delicious. I also grabbed egg rolls for hubby, and everything came out hot, fresh, and spot-on as always . But listen... the true star of the night --the one we could NOT stop talking about all the way home--was their cheese-filled rangoons . This is Macy Ding's recipe, and baby... it's a flavor explosion! Crispy, golden wontons on the outside with warm, creamy deliciousness on the inside. No surprise at all that they didn't make it home to share . These bite-sized beauties are an absolute must-try--so good they're what I call "drop folk" good . So if you ever find yourself craving sushi, I highly recommend MX Sushi . Tell them Best Bites sent you--and whatever you do, don't leave without ordering the cheese rangoons and one of their refreshing strawberry or peach drinks . Trust me... you'll be planning your return visit before you even finish your meal. They are Best Bites approved.
