Great food full of flavors! Hibachi is good and sushi rolls are made fresh. Best hibachi in town with a peaceful atmosphere.

Was looking forward to trying the sushi here last night, especially since we only live within 10 minutes from here. Highly disappointed! When we got home, we only had 2 out of our 3 rolls. I immediately call-calls were ignored. So I hop in my car and drive back over since they were not supposed to close for another 30-40 minutes. Nope, closed early- no sign on door or anything. And the rolls we bought were sloppy and soggy. Needless to say we went tonight to try and get the roll we paid for and they turned the open sign off as we walked in. (50 minutes early!!!!!!) We walked in AND THEY REFUSED TO GIVE US OUR MONEY OR THE ROLL THAT WE NEVER RECEIVED!!!!!!!!! Definitely spend the money & go to "Sake" in Port Arthur or "Koi" in Beaumont!!!!!!!! read more

You must try the "steak" dish in the form of grilled filet mignon-yep, I said FILET MIGNON. Unbelievably rich beef flavor, sliced into large cubes and melt in your mouth tender. You'll be served that with nice sized grilled shrimp, onions, mushrooms, zucchini and bell pepper all sauteed together. Mmmmm! Choice of fried rice or plain steamed, a green salad and a bowl of onion soup with a few mushroom slices for more flavor. The ingredients are fresh, you can hear the food sizzling in the kitchen and really, there is enough for a second meal. My spouse likes the chicken teriyaki but would never turn down the steak. The restaurant is very clean and family oriented. The staff is friendly. After practically every business in town was flooded, Kotoyama was one of the first restaurants to open for business. Do not go here. The order of the food did not come out with apps and soup together and then they delivered the nastiest steamed dumplings ever. Total mush and looked like they had be in someone mouth and spit out on to the plate. My friends hibachi dishes came out cold and the waiter seems to careless and said he would take the dumplings off only to find them still on the bill. One usually experiences bad service every now and then while gobbling up food at various joints around town. However,the occasional bad service can be tolerated when the place is packed and the waiters are being worked to death. Mistaken happen, but good restaurants work quickly to fix them. Kotoyama is not that restaurant. In fact, it is a restaurant that serves pricey pre-cooked food that has been ill-prepared. Upon entering, we were greeted by our waiter. We placed our order for an appetizer. I was delighted how promptly it was brought to our table, sadly this was the only delight to be had at Kotoyama. It was soon made apparent how the Saute Mushrooms made to our table in such a short time. We started our dinner out with a dish that had been sitting in the refrigerator for hours and had only been slightly heated. We were then treated to a finely cooked Chicken Teriyaki. Which was also cold and not even properly heated. The major problems did not arise until I started eating and discovered pieces of shrimp in a meal that was supposed to be prepared without shrimp. Being allergic to shrimp, I called the waiter and inquired about the dish. The waiter was very apologetic, however the owner firmly stepped in and started calming that the shrimp has been listed in the menu. Upon closer inspection of the menu, there was no shrimp listed. I asked for the dish to be replaced however the owner declined. I could tell that the waiter was very uncomfortable with the situation and this was not entirely her fault however she did not to help the situation. Kotoyama is a nice little cozy steakhouse. It's had a open but surprisingly intimate style to it. Our waiter was the only one working the floor and even still he was courteous and attentive. We had very little wait at all for our food. Speaking of food. It was delicious and on point. The steak my husband order was cooked perfectly how he liked it. And the crunchy rolls were surprisingly sweet but wonderful none the less. Over all we will definitely be coming back to have some more! read more

We frequent sushi/ hibachi restaurants so it was hard to give them even a 1 star. Our soup was cold, never received our salad, the edamame was far from fresh, it was a brownish green color!! The noodles were cold, chicken was very tough and sushi was falling apart and did not taste fresh at all!!!!! Wait staff was very slow and/or lazy. I never once had my drink refilled despite the fact that it sat empty on the table for more than half I our visit. Would not recommend anyone spend money here. For awful food our tab was $65.00 and that was without any alcohol. read more

It falls somewhere in between the other two. I've decided that the only answer is to post it in each listing. If you find that wrong, please forgive me. Or bite me. Your choice, really. Having recently made a second visit to Kotoyama, my opinion of the place has changed hugely in the positive direction. My first experience was not worthy of any stars at all. That was entirely due to the incompetence of the waitstaff and the indifference of someone claiming to be management. Needless to say, it took a little prodding from friends to get me back there almost a year later. I have to say that I'm happy they did. The service was better this time. We actually got the food we ordered - not some dipstick of a waiter telling us we didn't order any sushi and then bringing the check with the item scratched out. We, my wife and I, are not really sushi people. We enjoy it on occasion, but we don't know a lot about it. This trip, we had a couple with us who did know sushi. Their knowledge helped guide us and the experience was enjoyable. The food was all good, from the sushi to the tempura to the entrees. If you go, don't expect a fancy atmosphere. Do expect to drop a few dollars, as they aren't cheap. read more

I ordered the California hand roll and as usual it was a decent size. Fresh, the crab was fresh, the cucumber was fresh.. everything about my hand roll was fresh and crisp. My husband ordered the hibachi steak and it was great as well. I also ordered the splash and meadows plate and it was so fresh with nice good sized shrimp. as someone who eats hibachi frequently i was very disappointed. i got the hibachi chicken and fried rice. to start the fried rice had a very weird taste and the chicken was basically nothing but fat. the sweet tea tasted old and moldy. i couldn't even use the fork given to me because it was dirty. read more

I go get take out here every Friday. They are so quick and the food tastes fresh every time. Quick service and good customer service. Prices are fair. Everything looks pretty clean. Best sushi in town!! read more

This restaurant recently received a failing score of 0 in it's health inspection due to a roach infestation in the kitchen. "The Kotoyama restaurant on MacArthur Drive failed its latest Orange County health inspection because of an infestation of German roaches. Health Inspector James Scales gave the business a 0 score. He reports that the restaurant is closed between lunch and dinner hours. Scales went to Kotoyama the afternoon of Sept. 24 and found roaches on the floor near the grill, crawling on the wall near the dishwasher and several were inside the oven. A pest management company arrived that afternoon and treated the restaurant, dining room and empty spaces in the shopping center next to the restaurant. Pest manage was scheduled to return." I've never been a huge sushi fan. I was craving Japanese noodles and failed at making my own. This place made me a fan of sushi! Albeit, not TRUE sushi as I loved the chicken sushi (sweet and sour chicken w/o sauce) and the cream cheese stuffed sushi with salmon (so I didn't eat the salmon but it was still awesome). As a waitress at this location I can attest to the staff being worked to death. Although, that is the only part of this post to be true. None of our items are "precooked". Which is why it did not come out as fast as your appetizer. The hibachi grills are located in the back of the restaurant, all meals are prepared exactly the same as any hibachi/sushi bar (example: Tokyo) with the exception of the grill not being placed in the middle of the restaurant. As for the shrimp in your meal, all dinners come with a "shrimp appetizer", it is listed above every combo meal. Chicken, steak or shrimp. It is 2 pieces of large shrimp. If you request it not come on your plate, we relay the message to the kitchen. As staff, we can only assume you've read over the menu & don't inform each customer what comes on every dish unless asked. The only item we heat in our microwave is a dipping sauce we prepare per bowl after it is ordered. It consists of butter, teriyaki & soy. As for your experience, I cannot believe the owner did not point out the shrimp listed on the menu, since we are instructed to do so ourselves. Or that your meal was not free, let alone replaced. I'm sorry you feel you had a bad experience, but it is no reason to exaggerate. I see this was posted last year, hopefully the restaurant is up to par these days. Why not give it another shot? Kotoyama's food is not worth raving about and neither is the service. The service is very slow maybe due to the fact that the staff gathers around whatever counter they can find to lean on and visit while your drink turns to melted ice water. If you want a clean restaurant you should definetly pick a different one. The floors and windows are filthy, everytime I have been there so it wasn't just a bad night. The last time I was there the manager was ranting and raving to the employee's as he walked angrily in and out of the front door so who knows what that was about but it didn't phase them one bit. Hopefully he was telling them to clean the nasty windows! The dining area leaves me very scared to see what the kitchen looks like. So needless to say, due to cleanliness, freshness of the food, and proffesionalism of the staff including the manager, the last time I was there will definetly be my "last". read more

If I could rate this place 0 stars, I would. I was there tonight with my boyfriend and we ordered a couple of sushi rolls along with a teriyaki dinner. They brought out the teriyaki dinner and I found it odd that it came out before our sushi but I kept waiting patiently to see if they would ever bring it out. Our waitress never checked on us to make sure everything was okay. We were brought our check and still hadn't received the rolls. We checked and they were on there so we thought they were just slow coming out. My boyfriend had to call her over and ask if they had started on his food. She was confused and said that the teriyaki was what I ordered so we had to point out the rolls on the ticket that she wrote. We ended up just a having them take it off. Then to top it all off, I saw a roach on my napkin. I was also there a couple of months ago and they had let their liquor license expire so they weren't serving any alcohol. I didn't know what kind of business would be run like that but I have them another shot and immediately regret it. read more
