This restaurant is not located in the busier downtown Montclair but further north in the quieter area of town. We ordered the pork dupbap, pork belly dupbap, tofu ramien, and chicken ramien. The place was a bit crowded on a Sat evening but yet still managed to get the patrons seated and served nicely. The dishes have the standard flavors and oil, etc. that naturally come with Korean dishes. Get ready to provide a 1 to 5 spicy level (mine is 3.5 but in retrospect, I should've cranked it up!). Even though the price point was higher than the other Korean restaurant of similar class, the portions were respectable, even though perhaps not overly authentic. The only drawback was the ramen has the appearance of instant ramen. Taste was not bad, but still, we couldn't help noticing the square delineation from the packaging, LOL! So, at that price at $9, we felt a bit disappointed. Service was very nice and friendly and the server gave one of us an extra choco-pie chocolate pie package for no apparent reason, which was super nice. We found parking around the corner on the streets on Sat night, which was pretty good (lucky?) Nice dining experience overall though. read more

I'd been wanting to try this place based on all the positive reviews. So I finally decided to order the pork and squid dish last night. I was very disappointed. The dish was almost uneatable - there was very little squid with a bunch of fatty pork with 90% fat and a tiny bit of skinny meat. It is nothing close to what the pork dish that was served in korean restaurants. I will not come back again. read more

What an experience! Right when you walk in, there are pictures and thank you letters displayed all over the walls from customers. Service was quick and the food was PHENOMENAL. Incredibly fast and friendly service. Immediately greeted by a loud "hello," from what I assume is the owner at the back of the restaurant, we knew we were in for a good experience. We split the Korean dumplings, which are nothing like any other kind of Asian dumplings I've ever had. Rectangular and stuffed with more than the usual ingredients. Good, but not my favorite or what I was expecting. But the rice bowls made up for it. We split the pork and chicken bowls. For whatever reason, they charge an extra dollar to put your bowl in a hot stone bowl, which only causes the rice to continue to cook, stick to the bottom and harden up if you don't stir it around frequently. Still very good. As for heat, the server offered us a scale of 1-5 and suggested 3, which was just enough for me. 4 may have been too much for my taste; 2 too weak. The complimentary accompaniments were okay, but the kimchi was certainly not the best I've had. I also love the business logo. Very cool. read more

Hands down our favorite restaurant in Montclair and north jersey in general! My daughter absolutely loves this place and asks for it at least once a week. She is 8 and on a strict, self imposed chicken finger, hot dog, Mac n cheese diet too - but LOVED koreander chicken, noodles & rice. I live 5 minutes away, called the order as I was about to leave my house, and it was ready when I got there. Food was great. Ordered kimchi fried rice with bulgogi and spicy samgyeopsal. Each order came with miso soup that's darker than usual but very rich in flavor. One thing I noticed was the kimchi looked a bit pale, but that was probably just a random odd part of the batch. Great find during quarantine. This place has become a biweekly staple in my home for take out. I always get a spicy Bulgogi bowl, the seafood pancake, and the Goonmandu (Korean Dumpling). Everything is always so good. Dumplings are unique. They have a unique spice to them that makes sharing them almost impossible. Definitely my favorite thing on their menu. But, that soon changed and became busier as the night went on. Small intimate dining. My friend ordered Soondubu Chigae (#8), tofu and vegetable spicy broth with rice, which naturally had a kick, they then asked if he would like it spicier. On a scale of 1-5 he chose a 4. This is a cute small restaurant. It's clean, great customer service, and food is delicious. The chicken bibampap is so good but you must get it on a hot stone bowl. This is my new Korean spot. Th food was amazing!! I am still thinking about those Sweet and Spicy wings. They was cooked to perfection. I am always leery about ordering fried chicken from places because they are always to dry and don't have enough sauce on the wings for me, but these wings was juicy and flavorful. Sooooo gooood, I was licking my fingers. And the Kimchi fried rice is so good. I came in just for that and ended up trying the wings as well. Now I have to try everything on the menu. My husband and i have been talking about trying this place for years and finally did last weekend. Food was very good, fairly large portions. The seafood pancakes had a decent amount of seafood in them including (we think) scallops. Ordered 2 bimbimpaps and veggie dumplings. The food smelled great and I was excited to try it. Everything was packed wonderfully and the main dishes came with a small soup. Here's where my biased review starts.. I've only ever tried bimbimpaps at two other places: kraverie in jersey city which is Korean American fusion and Whole Foods in maywood. Obviously both locations are not true authentic Korean. But turns out I'm not big fan of true authentic Korean bimbimpaps. They were okay. I found the soup a bit fishy tasting. Didn't love the dumplings. Overall not impressed and I feel terrible saying that! Maybe I'll try something else on the menu next time read more

Today i had the sundubu jjigae and the girlfriend had the spicy pork belly dupbap. sundubu jjigae or spicy tofu soup. spice level i think was a 2? oh man. not what i expected. typically when i get sundubu from a restaurant, you get like.. well.. restaurant style tofu soup with the standard stuff in it. this place has a very home made flavor to it. even had mushrooms! spicy pork belly dubap or spicy pork belly with chef's special sauce. spice level 4. ow. this tasted amazing, but damn.. this isn't the kind of spice that gets you all at once at first bite. no. not at all. it's like meeting a nice person on the street, and starting a nice conversation about what's around you, and all of a sudden they are punching you in the face repeatedly out of nowhere. that's how this spice hits, and I wouldn't change a thing. all in all, i think im gonna be going here more often. i'm the curious type, so I plan on trying everything on the menu at least once. read more

Went for Weekday Lunch Special Food - 5/5. The banchan are tasty and clearly made in-house. Miso soup had vibrant Korean miso flavors, which tend to be darker and richer. Spicy pork belly dupbap had great sear and just the right amount of heat. Rice had that very light crust you want from a hot stone bowl without being hard. Delicious! Service - 5/5. Had dinner at Koreander on Saturday early evening. Place was not at all busy. We got our seats and had a look at the menu. Their menu is very limited. Not many options on korean bbq. No chicken or pork bbq. I ordered spicy chicken dupbap and my husband got dolsot bibimbap. Chicken dupbap was spicy and tasty. Dolsot bibimbap lacked flavor but was ok to eat. The hot stone pot was not hot enough to get the rice crunchy at the bottom. Kinda disappointed. Service was excellent. We might go there again if we have nothing else to try. Koreander is a family restaurant. My son has CRAZY food allergies - Dairy, Egg & Nuts - and they are each crazy dangerous to him. My family is appropriately hyper-sensitive where we go out to eat. Knowledge of food origins, food preparation and cross contamination are a few of our many concerns. And right from the start the owners, Benjamin and Shinhee (please excuse any errors in the spelling of this name) were on point! The folks at Koreander took time to understand our dietary challenges and walk my wife and me through their menu (multiple times). They explained ingredients to us(multiple times), and they were super sensitive to our concerns. In short, they treated us like we were important to them (every time). Years (and one more child) later, this family-style treatment has not changed! When we come in they welcome us with enthusiasm and excitement, which makes our children excited to be there. Moreover, it warms my heart to see that my family is not the only one that is treated with this type of Love. It appears that they great every family like this! The proof to this pudding is the fact that there are multiple pictures of Benjamin with families taped to the walls of the restaurant. This place screams "Welcome To The Family!" As for the food: Super Tasty! Sweet, Savory, Salty, Spicy - they have it all, and because of the food allergies in our family, we frequent Koreander often. FOOD Before you place your order they serve you a complimentary traditional soybean soup. The soup was delicious and reminded me of my mom's cooking but might be a little salty for those who are not familiar with the taste of fermented soybean paste. Koreander has the best bulgogi dup bap I have ever had. The beef is perfectly marinated and is place over a bed of rice with onions, scallions, and vermicelli noodles mixed in. This dish is served on a sizzling hot stone bowl. The only reason I gave this place 4 stars instead of 5 is due to the lack of side dishes they offer but this dish alone was worth the trip. SERVICE The waitstaff and owners were very warm and welcoming. Koreander is one of those places where you can tell the owners take a lot of pride in their establishment. Service: awesome. It's a pretty small place so every server can easily see you and be flagged down, and they are very attentive on top of that. Prices: about what you'd expect for a korean restaurant. Nothing super expensive and nothing cheaper than expected, which is reflected in the quality. Definitely high quality ingredients. Food: really, really good. We didn't feel like driving to Edison, Fort Lee or Palisades Park, which all have equally good Korean food if you know which spots to goto. I ordered squid and pork belly bokum (with mixed vegetables). Normally you only get a little bit of squid and a plate of veggies, but wow did they load up on the squid. There was a good amount of pork belly, but every bite had squid. It was such a nice experience since every time I order Nakji Bokum (squid w/ mixed veggies), the aforementioned comment is always the result. My girlfriend got the soondobu which was a LARGE portion, that also tasted really good. She said it was a little too sweet, so just ask them to make it a little spicier to mask the sugar. Spice: this is what really got my attention. If you're a spice fanatic, this is your spot. My tolerance is far above average, so it's really difficult to find a place that will serve me what I consider spicy. I ordered the level 5 spice (5 is max), and after convincing the waiter I'd be able to handle it, he went back to drop off the order. The owner of the restaurant came out to see who had ordered level 5, and told me he only has 3 customers who ever order 5 and asked if I was sure I'd be OK. They brought it out and watched me take the first few bites, but I was in heaven. I ate the entire dish. It was spicy, FINALLY, but not inedible. If you are like me and your spice tolerance is met with skepticism and nobody ever believing you until they see you eat, then come to this place and order anything with level 5.
