Ravintola Konstan Mölja offers a buffet of traditional Finnish food in a cozy, decorated dining room. The friendly server explained to us all the different dishes, starting with the huge array of cold appetizers. There were three different kinds of pickled herring, mashed boiled eggs, butter, beets, lingonberries, caviar, red onion, sour cream, pickles, quinoa salad, mushroom salad, cucumbers, sauerkraut, potato salad, pickled artichokes, several kinds of breads, and Karelian pasties (a potato filling baked in a rye crust). The soup of the day was the traditional Finnish creamy salmon soup, made with chunks of salmon, potatoes, and lots of different vegetables and herbs in a milky broth. For the hot entrees and sides, the Slavic Chicken Stew was made with chicken, potatoes, peppers, leeks, and other vegetables in a sweet and savory sauce flavored with blue cheese; and the Sautéed Moose was made of shredded moose meat flavored with warm spices including bay leaves and juniper berries. The sides included Barley, Mashed Potatoes, and Honey Roasted Root Vegetables (carrots, beets, green beans, and parsnips). The drinks included the standard coffee and tea, served with both dairy and oat milks; but the most unique drink was the 1% homemade ale, which had a sweet, fruity taste and light consistency. My favorite items from the huge selection of dishes included the mushroom salad (chopped mushrooms in a sour cream dressing) and the sautéed moose (which almost tasted like meaty, lean beef), but everything was high quality, delicious, and came at an unbelievable value for lunch. The food itself was located in the middle of the restaurant, you can come and put on your plate as much as you like. It's a great way to try various Finnish dishes. A word of warning - if you are vegan/veggie you are unlikely to get your money's worth! Tip: Dining in Helsinki generally costs a pretty penny, but the prices here are suprisingly low, especially considering the high quality of the food. I'm told that Finnish cuisine is an acquired taste, and that even many of the locals haven't yet acquired it ;-) Despite (or maybe because) of this, we made a point of trying both the Smoked Reindeer soup and the Reindeer stew. I'm not ready to say these dishes were Rudolph's finest hour, but I will say they where unusual and interesting :-) The food is served buffet style, and it's AYCE. Service was very attentive, and all the servers were friendly and smiling. Everything was very well presented, and there were lots of choices - unquestionably something for everyone! read more

Great to be open till 10-11pm at night in this residential part of town near the water. I was looking for a restaurant within walking distance from my Radisson hotel and found this on Yelp. I ddn't know what to expect, but was nicely surprised that it was bustling small bistro decorated in a nautical theme. The buffet allows tourist business men like me to try a few dishes without feeling stupid about ordering. And this place is no stranger to tourists as there were quite a few Italians in the house. The waiter showed me to a table (it's ok to dine alone here) and also explained what some of the dishes were. He pointed to a baked item stuffed with rice and told me to add the egg butter (I thought it was egg mayo.) The cold appetizer dishes included a few fish recipes. Try a bit of each - you may not recognize the dish but the flavors are great andnot fishy or slimey. I had some reindeer, the minced lamb with anchovy, the potato dishes and creamy vegetable stew. It was all good. I had 2 plates and called it a night. I gave my Finnish colleague the restaurant's business card as he said he hadn't dined here. I think he was impressed I found it. read more

I loved it. First the staff was so nice (a couple) and the atmosphere was such like a family. I really appreciated it. Talking with them about their travels... Anyway The concept is really interesting. I wanted to try scandinave food but just a dish was pretty expensive in other places. Authentic Finnish buffet! You'll know you're done when you're Finnish! Har! Trying to get a good cross-section of Finnish and Scandinavian food, I came here to get my fill. They offer a buffet of home-cooked fish, reindeer, and side dishes. I immediately went for the reindeer. The waitress was kind enough to explain how to prepare the dishes- the reindeer was served on a bed of mashed potatoes and lingonberries on top. It tasted dark, slightly gamy, yet tender. It was delicious- I'd eat reindeer over and over! They also had salmon, herring, anchovies, and other fish dishes. The fish ranged from smoked, to baked, and pickled. They had around twenty different dishes to try in all. The dishes ranged from safe for a picky eater, to the more exotic, foreign fish mushes. We got the 'fall colored' ice cream, which was lingonberry preserves, what looked like raspberry preserve and perhaps cloudberry preserves dripped over vanilla ice cream. The preserves were the best part of the dessert. The place is thoughtfully decorated- like an old fisherman's restaurant with nautical themed stuff on the walls, and fish netting hanging from the ceiling. The seating was cramped, they really jam in the customers. I was impressed that they offer a full wine and beer menu, with local beers by the liter. The restaurant was clean, and we got our waters refilled promptly. It was a great meal, and I fully recommend checking this out to any tourists who want a food cross-section of Finnish cuisine! read more

This is a traditional all you can eat buffet, with a variety of traditional Finnish home cooking, ranging from vegetables (e.g. pickled beets, cabbage, pickles, mushroom salad), fish (e.g. pickled herring, gravlax, fried salmon), and meat (reindeer, Karelia stew, vorschmack). This is my third time visiting Helsinki and, so far, this is my favorite restaurant to visit. For a decent price you get to eat the best of traditional Finnish Karelian cuisine, which includes fresh pickled starters, reindeer, smoked salmon, and breed stew, among others. I sampled everything that was offered, from the starters to the soup of the day (delicious mushroom soup) to the main courses, and even got some local draft beers and was pleased by everything. There was not a single item that I did not like. To the new owners, keep this going! I really hope business will pick up again from these unfortunate coronatimes. My partner and I will try to come back here again one last time before our trip ends. This buffet is full of different good quality food, and what's awesome about trying Finnish food on a buffet is that you don't have to choose only one speciality. This is as authentic as you can get!! The restaurant is buffet style and the owner makes all of the food and restocks the buffet. It gets crowded and seating is compact so coming in a group is not ideal. There is a good mix of food to choose from ranging from reindeer meatballs to elk meat. The mashed potatoes were great and local homemade bread starts you off nicely. Berries and pickled sides dress up any main course and you can pick between wine and beer to start your meal. This is clearly a tourist-oriented buffet, and has the usual buffet features: stale bread, hard dry meat (admittedly, I'm ignorant: is reindeer meat really supposed to be like hard chips of meat?), gluey mashed potatoes, rapidly aging foods forming crusts on top, etc. Everything was fine, and it didn't make me sick. That's about it. Did not want to stuff myself. There's a song that goes, "...all you can eat for $1.99/this old stew was the baddest in the land/one dollar's worth was all that I could stand...." It's like that. Another reviewer mentioned the "house wine" situation here and that there were no good wines. I only had one glass, and it was not so good. I didn't follow my instincts on this one. Just the fact that it was a buffet should have stopped me, but the old-looking menu posted out front, the tables full of tourists, and the general feeling of "off-ness" I got when I walked in should have sent me running. Solid, unpretentious, literal meat-and-potatoes style food. Definitely a good place for authentic Finnish cuisine- and it's a nice touch that you can sample many things in one visit. Very homey atmosphere, and the buffet sort of makes you feel like you're at a family potluck, except with a bunch of strangers. Your enjoyment of the restaurant will probably depend on how much you like traditional Scandinavian food. I read an article once that said "Scandinavian cuisine didn't develop in order to taste good, it developed in order to make you not die." That's not to say that food here isn't tasty - it's definitely not only sustenance level, and is pretty good overall. But for those searching fancier flavor profiles, or to be honest, any wines or desserts, you might want to look somewhere else. I tried the reindeer, the beef & elk meatballs, and the minced lamb with anchovies, along with several different potato dishes and a sort of spinach casserole. It was difficult to know what was what or which sauces to put on which dishes - the waitress told us once, but it was a lot to remember and there were no signs or labels on the buffet itself. The reindeer was quite chewy and tough, but to be honest I'm not sure if it's always like that or not - for all I know, it could be the tenderest reindeer in town! The meatballs were quite good, and the lamb & anchovies was about as strange as it sounds. Perhaps more of an acquired taste. The potatoes were good. I didn't care for the spinach as much, it was oddly milky, but again that's just my personal opinion. As mentioned before, there's no dessert, and the wine selection wasn't great. Come for the taste testing, mostly, and to say that you've eaten reindeer and elk. For those who require starched table linens, sparkling water and an expansive wine list, keep looking. If you want to experience a homestyle meal with traditional dishes, this is the spot! On our last night in Helsinki, my mom and I headed here for an authentic Scandinavian/Finnish dinner and we were not disappointed. First impression when we walked in was that we were over at a relative's house for Sunday dinner. The husband and wife who own and run the place are very welcoming and take the time to explain each dish and offer suggestions for pairing sides with the main dishes, ex: lingonberries with the reindeer. There were several meat dishes (including reindeer which is a must-try while in Finland), salmon, both smoked and broiled, mashed and baked potatoes, bread, salmon and potato soup, salad sides and condiments. The food itself is good and filling - you definitely get your €19 worth! My advice would be to come hungry and willing to try it all. Definitely felt like there were mostly tourists there the night we went, but not in a way that made it feel commercial or watered down. Great spot! read more

This is a buffet of Finnish/Nordic food. It wasn't your standard buffet with metal warming trays. The meat dishes were in cast iron pots with lids, the fish and baked dishes in ceramic dishes with a lid and bowls for the "salad bar". The salad bar was a large bowl of lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes. The condiments were: salmon salad, egg salad, beets, lingonberries, pickles, creme fraiche/sour cream, pickled herring, a mustard herring salad and I can't remember the rest. The meats were: reindeer (eat with lingonberries), a mince meat dish of lamb, beef and anchovies (tasted waaaay better than it sounds: eat with creme fraiche, beets and pickles) and pork (not my cup of tea)z there was also a vegetable soup (creamy like asparagus soup, but not think like clam chowder). The buffet is €20. Water is included, but not drinks. Most beers were €6. The staff is super friendly. The restaurant is cozy. I lot of tourists go there (from what I could see), but some locals as well. I'd recommend it. read more

We are still adjusting to the time and were surprised that it was already 8:30 pm and we still weren't thinking about dinner. checked yelp and found this restaurant close by. Yes, it is like eating a pot luck at someone's house! I am not too adventurous with food, but there was plenty for me -my husband will try most anything and there was plenty for him to taste as well. The salmon filets were cooked perfectly! Great value for the money and we were stuffed when we left! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because they ran out of meatballs, but we didn't get there until 9 pm, so it was easy to understand. THE PLACE to eat if you want to taste lokal Finnish food! The staff is very sweet! It's so rare that you have a waiter as sweet as the waiters at Konstan Möljä. He gave us a "tour" of the buffet, so we knew what we were eating, and which side-dishes went well with it. The food is lokal/finnish of course. It tastes good - very good actually.
