Came here for dinner and as soon as you enter they will charge you 2 Euro for hanging your jacket and they will not allow you to refuse. The menus come in multiple languages so it's easy to order. Wine menu is on the table. We ordered the snails with garlic butter, the reindeer filet and fries herring. The smaller order of the snails comes with 6 pieces and was actually quite delicious as it was smothered in garlic butter. The reindeer was extremely tender and the sauce complemented it very well. I did not like the raw onions in my mashed potatoes though. The herring was seasoned well and tasted great. Overall an excellent meal with large portions. If I find myself in the area again, I would gladly come back and try different dishes.

A Finnish friend brought me here after I requested traditional finnish food. There are reasonably priced lunch specials, but you can also order from the menu. I ordered the herring steaks with mashed potato and beets. Loved it. Prices are reasonable considering the quality.

Wow the Baltic herring steaks!!!!!!! I recommend them with a vodka drink they call Schnapps

Our meals. The meatballs and also the stuffed cabbage. The potatoes were awesome!

Oh my God this place was a sooooooo good. I will go back to this place if I'm ever in Helsinki. Truly authentic food, great and friendly waitress too. I had the meatballs and my wife had the stuffed cabbage. The little berries with carmel sauce for desert was totally out of the ordinary but a nice change. The atmosphere was good and the place smelled awesome! Go there!

First things first, their food is awesome. I had reindeer and cabbage rolls, and what actually surprised me the most was the quantity. Food actually got sent back, that *never* happens with me (modesty aside). One thing I didn't really get was the red lights on the windows, which just looked a bit tacky for such a good place.

The food was good and the meals were pretty big, so you definitely get your stomach full. It was quite pricey, though, and you were asked to leave your jackets in a paid cloakroom. The service was very friendly and the ingredients used were of good quality. My friend happened to find a small piece of plastic in her meal (nothing too shocking, maybe just from the package or something) and when pointed that out, she got her meal free of charge.

Finnish 'squeaky cheese' - a traditional dessert served with strawberries and cloudberry jam. Delicious!

We ate here on our first night in Helsinki, and it was a perfect introduction to traditional Finnish food! The waitstaff were kind and helpful, and their English was quite good as well, and our waitress was kind enough to answer our questions about directions to our next destination. The menu is in Finnish, English, and Russian, so it's quite accessible. For starters, the mushroom soup was very delicate and creamy, and the snails were cooked in a delicious garlic and butter sauce (though they were a little chewier than I was expecting). We shared the meat cabbage rolls for a main course, and were delighted to find that they were served with a lingonberry sauce & some delicious mashed potatoes. Best of all was the Finnish 'squeaky cheese' we had for dessert, served with cloudberry jam and strawberries. The atmosphere is clean and unpretentious, and the food feels very genuine and home-cooked. The specialty drinks were a little pricey, but the Nordic Berry martini was quite good regardless (vodka and blueberry liqueur with cranberries). Price wise, it wasn't bad, especially for Helsinki standards. We spent around 60€ or so for 2 starters, a cocktail, main course, and dessert. Portions were generous (especially the soups!) but not overly big. We're only here for 5 nights, but we've already considered going back to try some more interesting Finnish delicacies!

After an early evening stroll in Helsinki with my new travel companions, we came to this place after hearing about how popular it was. I got the Creamy Salmon Soup as my appetizer. The soup definitely had a nice creamy taste, and it was almost like eating Clam Chowder, but with generous chunks of salmon. The salmon portions were excellent. As for my main dish, I got the Steaks of Baltic Herrings, because I knew that herring is a popular fish eaten in Finland. I thought it was good, liked the crispiness of the fish on the outside. It came with mashed potatoes and beetroot. The beetroot was a pretty good complement to the mashed potatoes. As for dessert we shared some Finnish Pancakes with Strawberry Jam and Vanilla Ice Cream. The pancakes were also good, but with some cool ice cream, it tasted a lot better and had a nice sweetness. This dessert is a great choice if you think your stomach is not full enough. The service here was not bad, but we were too preoccupied talking about a lot of interesting things over the table that I didn't notice anything strange about the service. Expect to pay about €30+ for dinner, but you will get your stomach really full if you come here very hungry. Overall, if you are looking for a great dinner in Helsinki, this place is a great choice. I had a really full stomach after my dinner, and it was definitely one of the most enjoyable and tastiest group dinners I had in Europe so far.

Long time classic Finnish restaurant in the beautiful Ullanlinna neighborhood of Helsinki serves up some classic dishes. Tried the reindeer with cranberry wine sauce and it was extremely tender and had a nice rich, but not gamey taste. It was served with creamy mashed potato and boiled veggies on the side. Wasn't too much of a fan of the grilled salmon but the morel sauce was nice. The friendly and attentive service will soften the blow of the hefty price tag at the end. Dinner for two looking at nearly €100 with beer but worth it. Do make a reservation seeing as it is popular with both locals and tourists. Recommended.

Good atmosphere to have a small group dinner. Service was good and the food was served as the right temperature and right portion. Will definitely go back if I am nearby that area.

Authentic Finnish restaurant. We had the Wild mushroom soup and Slightly salted beef starters, the mushroom-onion salad under the beef was very tasty. I had the Pike perch à la Mannerheim, it was nicely lightly breaded. The other meat dishes we tried were Pepper steak, Beef steak à la Sea Horse, and Scandinavian hash. All dishes were significant proportions. For dessert we ordered Frozen cranberries with hot caramel sauce and the Finnish pancakes with strawberry jam - oh heaven!

It makes you feel like you took 30 cat tranquilizers and then went bungee jumping. Anyways, the singer of the band... his eyes were pure white, like he was doing a thorough examination of the back of his skull. It looked like he was possessed. Over all the band was good. They were no Apocolyptica, but I'll give them a pass. I checked out their first album and it was pretty cool, but the second album got a little too poppy. It's like they sold out. The audience was cool though, it was like half old fans and half new fans. I could tell that some of the old fans were like, just waiting to hear the hits, but the younger crowd were totally vibing. Let's just say that I saw some very new and unique dance moves that night. I now know what it looks like to twerk to metal. I digress. I read that the elk burger was great, and it totally was. It almost rivaled the reindeer steak, which stole the show. You don't see gazpacho on too many menus, so that was a delightful surprise. Almost as delightful as the cocktails. I asked the pleasant bartender to make me a mocktail because I'm 2 weeks sober. She went a little heavy on the pineapple juice, but that was ok. I'm kind of open to new things...ish. I guess you should try to make a reservation if possible! The menu is a bit limited and seemed to focus on traditional Finnish food. I was probably most interested in the meatball plate but it looked like too much food (also was like 24 euros which seems steep for meatballs), so I opted for a full sized tomato basil soup. I guess it was also a bit pricey at 18 euros for just soup and some bread so maybe not the best value. I did think the soup was okay, a bit on the saltier side so I had trouble finishing all of it. It did pair nicely with the bread but I didn't get that much bread for the amount of soup I got. The soup had a glob of goat cheese and basil which I thought paired nicely. My husband ordered the stew plate and he liked it but thought they didn't really give you that much meat. I agreed. The mashed potatoes were quite good and creamy but the dish kinda felt like it was just a very expensive plate of mashed potatoes and gravy. The blueberry dessert was not bad but I don't really like jam/jelly that much though so I couldn't eat too much of it. It did pair nicely with ice cream. Overall, interesting ambiance but probably not the best restaurant for me.

One of my favorite contemporary dining trends is stepping into a restaurant, either underground or top of mind, that feels as though you're simply dining in a friends house; and this is a theme that Chef & Sommelier embodies to perfection. The restaurant, which appears to just be a converted flat of sorts, sits on an otherwise nondescript street nestled in a residential area of Southern Helsinki. There's a small kitchen where the chefs are hard at work and quaint seating for no more than twenty people at once. A reservation is an absolute must, and the second I walked in I knew I'd made a great choice. The service at Chef & Sommelier is top notch, with chefs coming out to both serve and discuss each of the dishes that you choose and pair with wine if needed. Perfect English is spoken by all, and depending on the number of dishes you choose you can either make an entire evening out of your visit or be in and out in an hour or less. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? I really liked the selection logistics at Chef & Sommelier compared to many other set menu establishments. Upon being seated I was given a small card that listed eight dishes, with two starters, two primary mains, two secondary mains, and two desserts. Your price will vary depending on how many dishes you choose, but I opted for four at a relative bargain cost of €53 without any wine pairings. Yes, that's expensive, but Michelin dining really should be, and the portions here weren't tasting menu tiny. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? My dining experience was wonderful, and I'll just break down the courses below: Course I: Salmon with cucumber and pine nuts - This was a refreshing introduction, and the salmon was both fresh and flavorful. I'm not a cucumber fan, but the flavor really did pair nicely with the pine nuts and blossoms. Course II: Vinegar Potatoes two ways with Shaved Smoked Elk Heart - The vinegar soaked pomegranate berries were strong to the point of almost being overwhelming within this dish, but mixed with the potatoes, onions, and powerfully flavored smoked elk and what you had here was fascinatingly unique; and had me thinking at times that I was simply eating some sort of meat with chips. Course III: Lamb Neck with Greens - The highlight of the evening, the lamb neck was simply out of this world, and while I don't typically like broccoli, the grilled broccoli here was unlike anything I've previously tasted. Divine. Course IV: Blueberry Sorbet topped with Fresh Blueberries - After a fantastic dessert appetizer in the form of lemon sorbet, the real goods came out, with a blueberry sorbet topped with blueberries soaked in butter and salt. The combination was stellar, and concluded what was in aggregate a fantastic dining experience. Dual Stars Granted Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? Yes, Chef & Sommelier is undoubtedly one of Helsinki's finest dining establishments. Star Granted.

One thing I did notice was the lack of follow-up during the meal to check if everything was to our liking. It may simply be a cultural difference in service style, but a quick check-in would have been appreciated. The pricing felt quite high for the portion sizes provided. As someone visiting from out of town, it was a good experience overall and I'm glad we tried it. However, considering the value for the cost, I probably wouldn't return. PS the cheesecake sucked, but the jam that was served with it was good. The pancakes are underwhelming too.

If you're looking for a great spot to explore the cuisine of Lapland while you find yourself in…read moreHelsinki, this is a great spot to do so. Lapp is located only a block or two from the main esplanade and action of downtown Helsinki. I strongly suggest snagging reservations in advance as they fill up quite quickly. We ended up eating here at 4:30 pm because that was the only spot available during our day-of reservations. The interior is wooden and filled with antlers and kitschy decor to set the vibe. Yes, a lot of tourists go here and yes, I was on a mission to have some sautéed reindeer. Note that in true Helsinki fashion, prices can be quite high at this restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed our sautéed reindeer, lingonberry sauce and mashed potatoes alongside our barley risotto topped with Lapland cheese and seasonal root vegetables (so flavorful!). If you're vegetarian, note that the menu can be quite meat heavy. They also offer a menu of Finnish beers, cocktails with Finnish vodka, etc. Overall, a tasty and positive experience.
