It's sad, really. Komodo's used to be a great place to hang out. Laid back, good service, and a fun jukebox. I recently went with a group of friends looking for a low key evening around 9pm, early by Friday night standards. After about 10 minutes, a group of people came in and began to play all rap music. And not the fun, "I've heard this on the radio" type. Everyone has a right to their own taste in music, but it's always nice to mix it up a bit and be considerate of other people around you. Okay, everybody gets their turn, so we waited around thinking the music would get better, but no. We tried to play a few songs to break up the all rap playlist that had taken over, but kept getting our choices bumped by group playing rap. Really kills the chill vibe of what was formerly a Midtown institution and a haven from the typical Midtown bar. On top of that, several patrons planted themselves in the open front doorway on the porch and proceeded to smoke, allowing all of the smoke to waft inside the bar. I understand some people are still upset about having to smoke outside, but come on, how long has it been now since Houston passed that law? None of the employees stepped in to intervene. These may seem like trivial issues, and I would usually tend to agree with you. But it just seems like such a change from the place I considered Komodo's to be. It was enough for us to finish our one round of drinks in a hurry, and move on for the evening. On the plus side, the female bartender gave us good service, so at least there's that. But we won't be back, with so many other options in the Midtown area, we'll be on the lookout for a bit more welcoming and relaxing atmosphere. read more

I stopped in the other night for a wind down drink after dinner with the bf. He had been to Komodo's a couple years ago, and thought it would be a place I would like. He was right. It was like i was drinking in someone's house or on their front porch. I like that it wasn't overly crowded and it felt like I knew everyone in the bar. The bartenders were nice and talkative and the bar is dog friendly. It is in a great location for watching the neighborhood and the drinks were cheap. The atmosphere I experienced there was fun and relaxing! Just what I needed/wanted. read more

If you come here you MUST try the NUCLEAR RAINBOW shot!! I randomly found this shot while browsing their lengthy list of shots and found a winner! Every time I bring someone new to Komodo's I buy this for them and everyone LOVES IT! Otherwise, this is a great little bar it never disappoints. It has a casual atmosphere, good music, friendly bartenders, reasonably priced drinks, and even games to play. Bring friends, dates, out-of-towners....suits just about anyone. read more

I always forget that Komodos is behind front porch, but I always have fun when I go. One night some drunk older women were attempting to hula hoop in the middle of the bar. Needless to say that didnt go so well! They have a juke box so you can pick what you want to listen to. Their drinks are pretty cheap too! I want to really like this place because they carry Abita and have an ostensible Louisiana theme going on, but it ends up being just another bar. Last time I went the bartenders were particularly inept. Choosing to stand in the back of the bar and eat french fries rather than retrieve me another beer. Being a former residence, it has decent size and a cool outside area to hang out in. Really seems to be lacking an identity though based on the beer/liquor selection, music being played and mixed clientele. read more

What a great little pub! The staff is genuinely nice and the services is incredible! I always see people there on Wednesday but I went last night (Tuesday) and it was also pretty full. Decently priced drinks that are STRONG makes me a fan! It has a really awesome vibe, kind of like something you would see in Austin, which made me love it even more. The house can get a little cramped but just step outside and there is plenty of room. They even have a little cash bar out there so you can keep yours hands full! :) I'd come back here for sure! Komodo is a fun place. It's basically a house they remade into a bar. It's a great place to chill. I came here during a pub crawl. They have a drink called - the rainbow shot. It's dangerous, and you have to drink it fast, but it definitely will get the night rolling. It has 151 in it, and it'll be a good time. It was my first time to this place and I liked the vibes in the bar. I feel you could have just walked up to anyone and had a nice conversation. The bartenders also come off cool and give off that nice open feeling. I have been to too many bars that I feel the bartender act like gods and it is like begging for a drink. You will not get that feeling from this place. It your riding around midtown this would be my goto place. Also no sign of creepers so that is a place for females. read more

Everybody is great here. My favorite bar. Only downside to this place is there is a bartender who just wants to go of her way to be a bitch.

This is a place that I like to go with my friends at the beginning of our night in Midtown before we move on to some of the larger bars. I always have a good time here, it's very casual and friendly. I can't really talk about what it's like except on the weekends. read more

This review is based on a one time encounter . Yesterday a group of friends and I met at this establishment per directions given by bike bar crawl rep. So we gathered at Komodo, sat around 30mins, and waited on the bike to arrive. Obviously, we parked at Komodo because that's where we were. Before we left to go on our bike bar crawl 2 of my friends verified if it's OK to park there. They were told yes as long as you buy a drink before or after the bike crawl (I'm sure you can see where we are headed now ), so we leave and have a great time on our bike crawl, but when we're about to leave from one of the bars on our stop two of my friends see their cars on a tow truck. We head back to Komodo to figure out why they towed their cars. We approach the bartender to ask for the gentleman who told us it was ok to park there. She tells us he's not there, and we ask why would they tow us when they know exactly what we were doing. She becomes extremely snotty and says "Right I towed your cars bc y'all come in here and help your self to free food and don't buy any drinks, and then leave your cars." (They had some hot dogs sitting out ). We didn't eat any hot dogs, we were only there to meet up for the bar crawl, but were more than fine with purchasing a drink. It was unnecessary and apparent that she (the bartender) wanted to be nasty because she thought we were eating all her free food, and not buying drinks. Honestly, the kind of people my friends and I are ,we would have returned to that venue and bought out the damn bar as much as we drink! This is the reason for 1 star review. I guess this place has changed recently because based on my visit this weekend, I don't think this is a 4 or 5 star place. I was even contemplating giving this place 2 stars, but I gave it 3 stars because I had a nice chill evening out on the patio. The surroundings feel as if you're at some kind of frat party, but the crowd begs to differ. Diverse crowd of all ages and races. Warning: The reason I considered giving this place 2 stars was the bartenders here (or the ones last night) don't know what they're doing. When my boyfriend asked the bartender what was in one of their specialty drinks on the menu, she had to turn around to ask someone else. Aren't you supposed to know how to make the drinks on your menu? Another friend asked a different bartender what drink he likes to make and he said he didn't like to make any of them. Wtf? Wait. Sunday Funday! $10 bottomless keg???! Till it blows. Theyre not a place with tap beers which is a bit of a shame, but every Sunday they run this special till whatever keg they get runs dry. Usually its s domestic like bud or Coors. Still its a price you just can't beat. I've dragged many a friend to relax in this chill little bar. It's got friendly regulars who you shouldn't be afraid to spark up a conversation with. A dog friendly environment if you happen to have the pooch with you. This is a house masquerating as a bar. It looks like a local house that is hosting a party inside. Centralized bar with seating throughout. Good bartenders who can make drinks. Near a lot of other bars. Parking can be challenging. This place is where frat dudes and really drunk types go. If you aren't in the mood for the obnoxious crowd, this is not your place. But if you're looking to rage one night, this is a great spot to start. Or end. Either way, it's a relaxed spot for drinks and people watching. read more

Came here for the supposed $1 Jell-O shots and a cold beer. Very cool atmosphere but of course no Jell-O shots and no cold beer. The bartender seemed to be in a bad mood. She was very curt. I Got their beer special which was a Luke warm beer asked for a cold glass and was told glasses served room temp from the same nice bartender. I could not get the beer down. Best, most laid back bar in midtown. Friendly staff, great specials, and all the jukebox you can handle. It's totally different than any bar here. "0" stars! We have come here throughout our time of living in the city and never had an issue. We come to celebrate our friends birthday and order a beer, jack and coke, we get up to put a birthday song on the juke box and come to our drinks gone from the table. I walk to the bar and ask Bartender what happen and they say "it's your fault you got up, you left it there and nobody to "watch" it." Their excuse was that people come and pick up the drinks and throw them out.. A drink had been sipped twice? And I get up to put a song on and it's thrown away? We were treated horribly and I will no longer be returning, and we were regulars! Horrible, horrible! Not once was I asked would you like another, or I will get you a new one I apologize. I'm very disappointed. We have even brought friends from out of town to this establishment because of how well we were treated and the ambiance. Never again. Was forced to give it one star! read more
