Catty-Corner Ice House is the real deal. A REAL Houston ice house -- not some brand-new place trying to manufacture nostalgia with $18 cocktails and strategically distressed furniture. The beer is always cold, the prices are some of the best around, and you can play pool and darts for free. All you need is your ID and a good attitude. There's also a big outdoor area in the back with trees that feels almost like an old neighborhood park. It's peaceful, laid-back and genuinely relaxing -- the kind of place that's getting harder and harder to find because so many other bars are trying to be something they're not. This place actually has character. It feels like stepping back in time in the best possible way. Nothing is overdone, nothing looks like every other new bar in Houston, and somehow that's exactly what makes it cool. Dogs are welcome on the patio, and everyone we met was genuinely kind. And then there's Edward. The owner is a character with a BIG personality, and I mean that as part of the experience. He doesn't fake it, he doesn't put on a customer-service personality, and he definitely isn't trying to be anybody other than Edward. You have to come by and experience him for yourself. Places like this are getting harder to find. Catty-Corner Ice House has survived because it has something you can't design or franchise: personality, history and soul. Stumbled upon this place driving through the neighborhood. Decided to stop in for a drink to cool off from the summer heat. Nothing fancy! Definitely a dive bar Yet they offer cold drinks, pool tables and seating both at the bar and outside. This hole in the wall is low maintenance and welcoming. I've only have visited this place 3-4 times in 3 years & I WILL NEVER GO BACK THERE. I was there with my husband & other friends, & note I was only drinking water. The manager or owner just came up to me & said my bartender said you left your syringe in the last stall toilet. I was like what are you talking about? I was in the first stall. When I went in the restroom, the bartender was at the sink, she saw me go into the first stall. When I came out of the stall she was not in the restroom anymore. When I was air drying my hands, she walked back in & jumped & went straight to the last stall & shut the door. I was mortified, shocked & embarrassed that he came up to me & accused me of this. And NO, it wasn't mine!!! I don't recommend this place if you want to be accused of something you didn't do!! read more

First time at this place and had a great time. Free pool and there was also free hotdogs and burgers on a Thursday during the Astros game. Also great service from bartender. Perfect place to watch the games! I will always come back every time I'm in town. Definitely a must! read more

Christmas lights hanging under the bar nearly gave my buddy a seizure and when he asked if they could be unplugged the bartender laughed and went about her business. Honestly, I wasn't even mad at her for the response. It's a dive bar after all. If you shun good beer and prefer buckets of Miller light and other cheap beer, this is the place for you. No frills, interesting patrons from all walks of life, and an attentive bartender. The bathrooms were also way less hellish than what I expected, so that was a plus. In a city full of $16 cocktails and $8 beer, this place is a rarity and should be supported. I only went because a friend had fond memories of the place, but I'd take someone if they asked for a gritty dive bar. It's one step above a place like Hunter's pub and much less likely to catch hepatitis or get stabbed here. 8/10 I would do it again. read more

This a neat old-school ice house. Located just north of the Heights district in Houston, it's a cool little place to go hang out, have some suds and shoot some 8-ball. If you are looking for a swanky club for a first date, this is not the place for you. Catty Corner is a jeans and cowboy boots, old, smoky ice house kind of a place. I love it... It's the kind of place you can just hang out in with no worries in the world. No one knows your name and no one cares. It's just laid back, rustic and relaxing. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. They have free pool They have a minimal beer selection but the prices are good They have a good juke box full of a good variety of music, including country, Pop, Tejano, old school rap and hip-hop. A buddy of mine usually DJ's at this place every once in a while. So whenever he plays I try and make my way out there for support. I mean at first glance you think it looks like a house. Which I think it once was a house but now its an ice house. The place is spacious and the patio is nice. Ive been here a few times and every time I visit the pool tables are free. Yes some of the ball are missing, therefore you will sometimes find maybe two 1 balls or 7's whatever the situation might be with the right number written on the ball. If you are like me and don't drink any beer, then this place is not for you. There is another pub down the street but I can't recall the name. I mean either bring a flask or have a few before you make your way out here. Another thing that some might find difficult is parking. The actually customer parking is either the street or the few spaces in front of the ice house. Ive had it to where somebody blocked me in, so I had to tell the DJ to make an announcement for a particular vehicle to be moved. This place is the Holy Grail of Neighborhood Dive Bars for me. Let me tell you why this place is doing it right: 1. It's an old school ice-house complete with garage doors, cheap beer, and a BYOL policy. They open the garage doors, people can feel free to smoke cigarettes or cigars inside (I am not a smoker for the record but it adds to the ambiance). Don't show up if you need swank in your life or are out trolling for "uber hot chicks." It's bare bones and that's how I like it. 2. They do have an outdoor area with what looks like washers set up but I haven't spent a whole lot of time in the outdoor area because there is free darts and pool inside. That's right; Free. 3. I felt completely comfortable showing up in all of my leathers with my "biker buddies." No funny stares. No sideways glances. We were the only ones so dressed (I've seen everything from ties to t-shirts here), but it didn't seem to matter. As long as we were friendly and respectful to the ladies behind the bar, we were treated like family. Speaking of which, the ladies behind the bars were awesome; quick with the beers and friendly. So if you aren't afraid of a little dinginess, and enjoy a place where you don't have to constantly think, "Do I look cool enough right now?" or "I hope my hair gel keeps me looking well coiffed this fine evening" then this place is for you. Been here quite a bit since I used to live near Shepherd and Tidwell. The bartenders have always been female and very sweet. Lindsey's been there a while and is usually working when I show up so I've taken a liking to her. Some nights they're totally dead, other nights people (make a reservation?) for birthdays and other celebrations. Lots of locals. They have their own lot with gravel/dirt parking. You can park on the street too if there's no room. There's covered, outdoor seating on a nice deck. Also horseshoes outside near the deck. Inside is decent and roomy. There's a jukebox, handful of small TV's and one big screen, a few casino games and 3 or 4 pool tables that are always free. They're a little beaten up, but come on, FREE POOL. :) They have the usual brews; Budweiser, Bud Light, Corona, Shiner Bock. And I think this place is BYOW. Definitely call to make sure, though. Good place for a drink after work or to hang with some friends. read more

Came here when it use to be called J's... years back... it was a cold winter night, a dj was playing old school songs, someone was having a party and invited us to dig in to their buffet of wings, fries and stuff. Went back again last month. To be honest with you, I do not believe that you can truly appreciate the Catty Corner with just one visit.
