I'm penning this review update because I just had a wonderful, curbside experience with KolKid! We realized yesterday, the first snowy day, that my daughter had 100% fully, no wiggle room at all, grown out of her winter boots. Hooray. So we stuffed her full of extra socks and hoped for the best. I went online and was about to give more money to amazon to get something here within 24 hours and then I stopped and thought, I bet I could walk and grab some damn boots. I phoned KolKid and sure enough they have everything you need online! Just select in-store pick-up and pay in advance. I ended up paying a lot less for much higher quality boots. Support local, it feels so good and you (or your kid) will look cuter, too. read more

This deserves for than a 2.5 star rating. I went here because I live within 5 mins walk and i saw that it had good reviews on Google. It was my 1st time shopping for a baby shower so the employees were super helpful and knowledgeable regarding things to buy - I didn't feel rushed or forced to buy at all. I never write reviews but I had to for this. First, the employees at this place are wonderful and helpful and caring. The owner however is incredibly rude, as if she is annoyed you are even walking into the store and makes everyone feel unwelcome and is condesending. The way she talks to her staff and customers is appalling. I have never seen anything like that before. I don't understand. She should go in only when the store is closed if she hates people so much. I have spent a lot of money over the years because it is conveniently close to my house but honestly its my last resort. Given the stark contrast of customer service reviews, it seems there is at least one pleasant and one not-so-pleasant staff member that works here. Unfortunately, I also had an awful customer service experience. I came into the store looking to buy shoes for a newborn. There was a display of moccasins in various colours and sizes. There were no signs, pricing, and sizes on display were all mixed up. I was looking for a specific colour in a size 1 and had to check a few boxes. After checking my 3rd box, the woman behind the counter angrily called out to me "WE HAVE MORE SIZES IN THE BACK." She offered no assistance (before or after this exchange) and she could obviously deduce what I was doing. It was not clear they had more sizes and not intuitive that these shoes were mass-produced given they were made by a Toronto designer. I was hoping to buy shoes that day, but as she was so rude I did not want to give her or the store my money so I promptly left. I will never go back and I will tell my friends and co-workers about this awful experience. read more

The stuff in this store is cute, but the customer service is terrible and this is why I will not return, ever. We received two 'Sophies" at our baby shower, and one came with the KolKid receipt. About a month after our daughter was born, we headed to Kolkid to buy a baby carrier and exchange the Sophie (still in box, with receipt). We bought an Ergo baby carrier, and the infant insert, which came to well over $120. When we were completing this transaction, I also brought out the extra Sophie and asked if I could exchange it or issue a credit towards the carrier. I was told there was nothing they could do since it was past the "21 day" exchange policy. Sorry, we were busy having a baby and just dropped quite a bit of money at your store! I should have left then and there but was a bit shell shocked and ended up purchasing the carrier anyway. We emailed the manager about our experience and never heard back. So, sorry, I will take my business elsewhere. read more

This store has some cool stuff if you want to give as a gift or just buy for your child. The prices are a bit pricey. The customer service sucks! When you want to think outside the Toys 'R' Us box, then you come here... provided you're prepared to spend more than what you would for your typical Fisher Price toy. I love this store. I haven't done any price comparison shopping so I can't really comment on the other posters' experiences, but that's because what's great about Kol Kid is they have unique things I can't find anywhere else. If you need basics it's probably not the best place, but if you want to treat yourself or someone you love you can't go wrong. When my sister found out she was having twins that seemed like the perfect occasion to splurge on very adorable $20 onesies. Usually I'm all about the Carter's outlet $12 six pack of onesies (which you won't find at Kol Kid). The staff is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, and in spite of the high-end nature of their stuff they are incredibly mellow about strollers and toddlers running around. I also love that they always have new stuff coming in, so even though I browse every week or two (I live very close to the store) there's always something new to look at. If you tend to be a frugal person or a bargain hunter, it's definitely not the place for you. If you want to splurge once in a while (or you're lucky enough to be rich!) it's a wonderful place. read more

It's a shame that the customer service is so spotty, I would love to support a local business that has quality products. One time a credit note wasn't honoured because it wasn't in the system due to a technical glitch. It was eventually discovered that the returned item was in stock when they did a quick inventory later on that day. But it was maddening and pain to be in the situation and have to argue with sales staff in order to use my credit. On another occasion, a wooden teether i had bought had a small splinter. I called right away and was told I could exchange it, but and when I brought it back to exchange, the owner said that it was hardly anything (it was a small splinter, but how irresponsible a mama would I be to all my infant child to put that in his mouth?). Usually though, I find the sales staff are helpful when I am looking around. As I said, customer service is spotty... read more

I came in today with my best friend and her one year old son. We ended up spending good money here as it's his birthday next month and we loved the cool stuff the store had as it was our first time in the store. We left offended and completely turned off from returning there. The customer service was just awful and i was appalled at how the staff treated my best friend who's shopping for her son right.... this one employee in particular was so rude pushing her way past my best friend snooping in my best friends stroller. After we purchased our items that employee asked us where we left a little hat.... my best friend told the lady where to look... not finding it she made my friend not leave and walk to the back of the store where she left the hat. Kol Kid is such a lovely store! There are so many unique items that will appeal to both kids and parents. The clothing is especially noteworthy as most of the brands they carry are European and hard to find anywhere else in the city. The service is great, the girls who work there have never been anything but pleasant. Kol kid is a wonderful alternative to anyone who is wary of retail chain stores or really to any parent and kid who wants something a little different! I have a Niece and a Nephew.. both of which are in the age bracket that is perfect to shop here at Kol Kid. I like to go there as opposed to going to the big kid chain places when I can.. I am one of those people who are early bird shoppers for christmas as I hate leaving anything to the last minute. I think with this store, it would be best to sum it up in a pros a cons list Pros - there are some pretty incredible gems in this store. Whether it is interesting musical instruments or unique night lights. You can find something for that lil person on your list - It's centrally located downtown unlike most of the kids stores, you aren't having to travel to the suburbs to find something for them - They have the brand names in this store but also they have some independent artists which is a nice contracts Cons -way overpriced. There's no need to spend so much money on clothing for a kid who's going to grow out of it in two seconds - The staff aren't all that eager to help. I have never seen anyone stand out from behind the counter. They are always there talking amongst themselves waiting for someone to come and pay for an item - Being on queen street, they too have Queen street hours. Sometimes I need to pick something up last minute in the morning but I have to wait until they hit the double digits on the clock before getting anything Overall its worth checking out but be prepared to spend big bucks on something that the kid (or kid at heart) will play with for only 5 minutes. read more

I don't have any kids myself and often don't know what to get for them, so this is my go-to place for gifts for my friend's kids of any age. They have a great selection of really great quality toys and books -- they even have some cool looking toy cars that I wouldn't mind getting for myself! I try not to buy clothes as kids gifts as they grow out of them so fast and they often get hand me downs, not only that, kids clothes are pretty expensive. The staff is friendly and very helpful, so if you are not too sure on anything they will give great suggestions. The prices are a bit on the high side, but luckily I don't have to shop that often for kids and I gladly will pay for the convenience knowing I will find something there. read more

I love this store! They have a great selection of inventory that suits newborns to kids from clothing to toys (and some very nice handmade wooden ones). Plus a lot of their items are environmentally friendly and/or organic. The staff have always been super friendly and helpful :o) I suppose the prices are a tad high but only in compassion to stores like Babies R Us. Prices at Kol Kid are the same or maybe a bit lower than other competing stores in the neighbourhood. Pretty disappointed with this store. We bought hair clips for my niece that were marked $8, we bought another $80 worth of stuff for her, paid at the counter and were on our way. The next day we noticed that we were charged $16.95 for the hair clips. When I called to ask about having the $8.95 back (not a big deal - but on principle) I was told that although it may have been marked wrong they would not refund the money...I could return them but that was it. This store has great selection of everything and an awesome variety of unique items. But the customer service SUCKS, just as others have said. We have been a few times before, and always struggled to get friendly assistance from staff. But today was the clincher. We called first to confirm that they had what we wanted (a pair of sandals in a specific size/colour), at that they are open until 5 pm on Sundays. We rushed there from 20 mins away (with a 2-year-old toddler who makes everything a slow process, and a pregnant belly, so this was a feat in itsefl) and arrived at the store at 4:59 pm.... only to find the door locked and lights out. I could see the staff at the cash, and gently knocked on the door to grab their attention. Tried a few times and no luck. Tried phoning, and no answer. After a bit of persistence, they finally answered at about 5:04 pm and said the cash had been closed already. I reminded them that I wasn't coming from nearby, that I was after something specific, and I could be in and out in 2 minutes. But they wouldn't budge. I get it - we arrived under the wire, and I'm sure they have evening plans to get to as well. BUT - it was a $50+ purchase that they could have completed in literally 2 minutes... you'd think that it'd be in their best interest. Instead, they turned my pregnant belly away, presuming I'd come back another time. But alas... I will not. I crossed the street to Mini Mioche, who are open until 6 pm on Sunday (like every other store nearby!), and gave them our business. And with 2 young kids and many years of child-gear purchases ahead of us, they've lost more than just today's $50-purchase from us. That's a lot of business lost. I make it a habit to shop at independently owned stores, especially those that carry local products and pieces by artists and artisans. And this place has a darling selection of gifts: beautiful hand-made gems, whimsical art, inspired toys, nice collection of storybooks. But it really does have terrible service as others mention. I don't expect (and don't like) to be fawned over in a shop, but the woman I assume is the owner can be quite rude. The turning point for me was when I watched the owner/staff snap at a very quiet and well behaved child of about 5 for looking at a children's book. Can you imagine! A children's store where children aren't welcome. Kind of pitiful, even if she was having a bad day... For similar gifts I like to go to Type Books across the street, Scooter Girl, Treasure Island Toys, Planet Kid, or Kid Culture. read more

Please indulge my (somewhat) long review. I've never reviewed any product/business before, but I was compelled to do so, as my experience with this business has left a months-long bad taste in my mouth. To re-iterate many of the reviews on this page, the customer service simply isn't worth spending money at Kol Kid. For my son's third birthday I spent well over $300 to outfit him with a scooter and helmet, as well as a bicycle bell that I later returned, because it did not fit (even though it was purchased at the same time, from the same store. One would assume that the staff there would know if this particular model would be compatible with my purchases, but that's probably a separate issue). I had to exchange my son's helmet twice to secure the right fit. One of those times I also returned the bell, and purchased a hat. Unfortunately, for probably the same reason why finding a helmet was so difficult, the hat did not fit. In a rush one day, I brought the helmet and hat back to be returned, but forgot the receipt for the hat at home (but not the helmet). As someone who has worked in retail before, I understand that this is an inconvenience. However, I did not feel that the treatment that I received was warranted. I am a young mother. When I tried to exchange the hat, I was embarrassed (dare I say shamed?) in front of a line of impatient customers. A woman (who I am assuming is either the owner or the manager) even suggested that I could have stolen the hat - in front of me. While a legitimate possibility that any merchandise returned without a receipt could be stolen (it wasn't), to insinuate that in front of a customer is in poor taste. A customer who had spent $300 in her store the week before. I was humiliated, disgusted, and promised a credit which I am dubious about, as many other reviewers have made it clear that their credits have not been honoured. My son's birthday was in June, and I am clearly still upset. After using that credit, I will never return to Kol Kid. For the price point, I suggest that you do not either. read more

I had read reviews of people being ignored, but it was especially bad, worse than I thought it would be. Two women sitting behind the counter, whispering to each other and not even looking at me (the guy who was cluelessly wandering around). I would have asked for help, but I didn't feel like it. I'm really shocked by the bad reviews on here. I have been coming here for years and have always had a great shopping experience. The staff always goes out of their way to be helpful but knows when to give you space if you're just browsing. While they absolutely do carry higher end clothing/shoes they also stock a lot of common brands such as Skip Hop. I've never had a hard time finding a beautiful splurge item or more accessibly priced necessities. I admit that I was surprised to find out that they only offer store credit on returns but quickly learned that that is pretty common in Toronto "baby boutiques". I've never found it to be a problem because they sell high quality products, I think I've only had to return shoes due to sizing issues? I'm thrilled that the reviews don't seem to have impacted the business, I would hate to see such a great store shut down! read more

I'm rather surprised at the tone presented by some of the comments posted. People seem too eager to purchase hand-crafted, organic, and/or 'one-of-a-kind' merchandise but when it is time to pay suddenly the goods they want are too 'overpriced' to support the independent craftsperson. I am a male, in my late 20's and no I am not a hipster douche bag. I am also not a rich person by any sense of the definition and I know relatively little about purchasing gifts and accessories for the baby/child age bracket. However, with that being said, I went to Kol Kid at the advice of a friend. When I entered the store I started to browse and made the following observations whilst waiting to talk to an associate. First of all, what is the deal with parents thinking their child will be the next Nobel prize laureate. One mother set her boy on the store floor while looking through some of the toys and tried to convince the sales associate that her 1.5 year old functioned at the cerebral level of a 3 year old. Just let the kid be a kid. Second, this store was kid friendly; and, by that I mean that patience was at an all time high. Whatever happened to parents disciplining their child for bad behavior. A store is not a play centre in the sense that kids should not be allowed to run amuck and throw merchandise on the ground while 'expressing their individuality'. What's with every kid having a syndrome and the failure of parents to play the part of the disciplinarian. Ok, enough of that tirade. I was finally able to talk to an associate after another customer tried to swindle a return for an item the store did not even sell. I could tell the associate was a little ruffled after the verbal abuse she was just subjected to but I explained that I was looking for some gift ideas for a new born and mom. She gave me several great ideas and provided answers to all of my questions. I asked about the return policy given the fact this was not Walmart and had it explained to me (21 days, more than appropriate - but I imagine, as with similar stores, you could always call and inquire about other arrangements if necessary - an exception, not the norm). As for the price. Yes the items at this store are more expensive than the mass produced goods sold at Walmart and Toys R Us. However, I am a firm believer of supporting the individual craftsperson, and/or small business and not inequitable labour. Also, I actively seek to avoid goods produced in Asia provided the numerous news stories of goods labelled non-toxic that contain lead paint, BPA, etc. Overall, my experience at Kol Kid was friendly and service was good. More importantly the new born and mom loved their gifts. The onesie I bought did not fit, but was exchanged with no difficulties. I also found a couple of really great books for another friend when I went in a second time. I will recommend this store to my friends (people who are not naive enough to realize that quality goods cost money, and that kids do not need one of everything in three different colours). Finally, I have taken time to check out several other stores that cater to a similar demographic and the prices are comparable. read more

I call myself a gypsy because we constantly travel for work and pleasure. We seem to have seen it all and so when we made the trek to kolkid we were delighted to see the selection of toys. Compared to other stores the prices were right in line. I don't really enjoy going to toys r us so this store for me was just the right size. In addition we were able to pick up a couple of cute dresses and leggings. Again I have purchased the "tea" brand before the prices in kolkid were right on. I often find myself shopping in Desigual when in Europe and the Tea stuff is cheaper than Desigual. As for service everyone was very kind and more than helpful. I can't speak to the experiences of others but I can say that personally I'm able find something great for my niece and nephew within my price range by asking the staff. I bought a Moover truck for my 'great' nephew's first birthday. (It became one of his favourite toys) Unfortunately there was a problem with it after 6 months, and no longer could be used as a part had broken off creating a jagged edge. Lisa, the owner of Kol Kid emailed the distributer of the truck for me and arranged to have new parts sent to me. They arrived yesterday. Thank you Lisa!!! Stopped by the Kolwear location and was horrified by how we were treated by the staff. I was with my two young daughters and told them they could each pick an umbrella. They were very excited and as kids do popped them open. I was also in the process of picking out new rain jackets & boots for them when one of the staff members snatched the umbrella from my 3 year old and screamed at her that umbrellas are not toys and the store is not a playground. We obviously immediately left, but not before several rude comments were made in our direction. Unbelievable. I recommend not shopping at this over priced kids store which clearly takes itself way too seriously. Both my daughters left in tears. read more

I shop at Kol Kid a lot, since I live in the neighbourhood and all my friends are popping out mini-me's. Yes it's pricey but the stuff is cute and I always thought my friends and their kids were worth it. I bought a friend's babe an outfit and a hat about two months ago. They live out of town so we don't see them all the time. We had dinner this weekend and they brought the hat back, in the KK bag with the sticker still on it on it, and said it was too small. Went into the store today, explained that I just wanted a bigger hat. And they literally said "there is nothing we can do." The explanation is because the receipt says 21 days to refund/return. I get that, I'm just disappointed, especially since I really try to support local business. Brutal customer service. I will NEVER EVER shop at KK again cause the KK stands for Krapy Kustomer service! read more

If you are looking to shop in a beautiful store with unique and inspired gifts, go to Kol kid. If you are, as someone else said, 'looking for a bargain', go to zellers. In my experience the staff are always courteous, but don't follow you around, which I like. The store is so well put together you feel like you are discovering new treasures all the time. You can spend a lot on a beautiful one of a kind item, but you can also find lots of unique things for under $20. I would recommend you check it out, it's pretty special. read more
