We had two dogs in to see him and he didn't even listen to their hearts and lungs, even though one of the dogs was there specifically for a cough. Blood work was done on him and a stool sample and that was it. We went somewhere else where X-rays and ultrasounds were done and we found a mass on one of his lungs! Our other dog needed a growth removed and they said he would have to be completely sedated. We went to another vet who was able to remove it without having to put him under. Their offices and equipment are old and just don't seem to be up to par. I've been to them in the past for routine visits, but I probably won't go back again.

She behaved really strangely one night and when we got to grandma's house she peed blood in the living room. We all panicked, called an urgent care facility, only to discover they were an hour away. They then thank heavens directed us to this vet. They were lifesavers! They were open on Sundays (BONUS!) and told us to come at our earliest convenience. Luckily we discovered Agnes only had an infection and they gave us the pills and we were on our way. Dr. Turetsky was so sweet and friendly and took care of us like we were his regular clients. We are all so grateful they were able to take care of us over the holiday weekend or it would have been a very stressful time for everyone. Thank you again!

She immediately calmed me down BY TEXT (crappy reception out here on the island), talking me calmly through the options (such as amputation). We ended up going to the city to my favorite animal hospital for a surgery consult, got stronger pain meds from the hospital, and now that Layla is comfortable again, we are taking a few days to really consider what the right thing for my dog will be. Dr. Alward continues to support and advise me (I'm peppering her with questions about immunotherapy, just in case there's a trial out there). These are the kinds of vets -- true dog-people as well as people-people -- that we need more of. Thank you Dr. Alward. Your immediate availability, quick thinking, generosity of time and spirit, and obvious empathy were decisive in turning a dark, panic-induced "final day" in my mind, into a week of calm consideration -- seeing a surgeon & oncologist, emailing with immunotherapists, and getting to see my dog, who is now on adjusted pain meds, enjoy another romp on the beach, just this morning, which I literally didn't think I would ever see again. Dr. Alward is now my go-to vet out east, and I will definitely be using her -- hopefully even for Layla, if we get lucky, but certainly for our younger dog Ramona.

First time ever finding an actual injured turtle- Stopped because I had just drove past what looked sort of round and orangey in color- Backed up slowly beside to see a little juvenile box turtle walking in circles - No way to help across the road because he/ she was confused or injured. Picked up to check and lo and behold- face tucked in and bloody near face and neck under the shell front. Brought him straight to a puddle gave a tiny dip of water to help heal / drink then put onto some papers in a small box in the back that had held trash bags (emptied)- took a side off and with a little bending was a good way to hold him/ her in the car- and ready to find help. In the car he got back some strength and put his injured head out - and climbed up the little box - Oh no! Raced back to a garage for a bigger tall box and double boxed him for safety. Boxed twice -- small inside big on newspaper- raced over (15-20 min) to this amazing rescue group up on the North Fork after making a half a dozen calls around. Karen answered- and gave the ok to bring - Stacy, Danielle and Carley welcomed the sweet baby turtle in - brought him to ICU and - think he has a good chance to recover. While there I was given a small informal tour around and learned just how serious these wonderful people are. They pick up where everyone else drives on or by. They made me feel like I helped a creature meanwhile - it's all on them - they work 8-10 hours a day - a wonderful young woman told me. Please think about these groups when needing to save a creature and again when feeling generous - local groups really do the work and get results. If better in a few weeks, months or years they may be released to their original territory- within the distance of a football field they said- usually walking distance to some type of water.
