Have went here a few times throughout the years. At first it was great I gave them a 5 star. But yesterday was awful the orange chicken was extremely hard. And the rice was awful. The chicken teriyaki didn't even look like chicken. Not to mention they charge five dollars per soda and we barely got refills because the waiter was awful. I wish I would've never tipped him, but I did only 10%. My husband and I celebrated our 27th anniversary with a day trip to South Padre Island. To end the day we stopped for lunch at the Kohnami Japanese Restaurant. The service was great and the food was delicious! We didn't get our waiter's name, but he was a nice young man waiting tables on 8/1 at 3:00 pm. He did a great job! He answered all our questions since it was our first time there and made it easy to make our selections. I ordered the spicy seafood noodle soup and my husband had the sweet and sour pork. We also ordered the Harlingen roll to share between us since that is our home town. The soup was wonderfully spicy and the noodles were yummy! The pork was very tender and the sauce light and obviously made in house. The Harlingen roll was very nice. What surprised us was that it was deep fried. Everything was so delicious! The restaurant is beautifully decorated, clean, and comfortable. We went for lunch, but I suspect it would be a wonderful place for a romantic dinner for two. We will definitely be back. I have NO idea where these one star reviews are coming from! It must have been totally different in the past. My gf and I have eaten here three times and have had nothing but a great experience. The owners, servers and chefs are all attentive and accommodating. The food is top notch and their sushi is fresh, creative and delicious. We drive 30 minutes from Brownsville just to indulge in this treat. If you are in the area make sure to make this your food destination. read more

We went around 3 pm on a Sunday. The ambience was good. I was expecting more based off of the most recent reviews, I had hope. Considering it is on the coast, normally sushi/Japanese restaurants are good and it was clean. But, I would skip out. The food tasted like it came out of a bag, and was frozen previously. We tried to eat but had to send our food back. They didn't try to offer another meal. And then tried to make us pay for the one thing we sent back and barely touched. Johnny was our waiter. Easy on the eyes and very easy to talk to. Just saying that because I'm single ha ha. He was amazing and super sweet! Offered many options on the menu with advice. Brought samples so we could try without us even asking! I believe the owner or manager was also helping us, and he was super attentive to his employees and his customers which is a bonus! I had such high hopes for this place, and they were crushed. My husband and I have been strictly vegetarian for a few months, so we were pretty disappointed in our options when we started looking for places to eat on vacation here in SPI. But I got very hopeful as I read through promising reviews about this place being the most vegetarian friendly option on the island. We came in on a Wednesday afternoon just a little before the dinner rush. Only a couple of other tables around us, and a sit anywhere you like type of vibe since it was so slow at the time. Despite the easiness of the atmosphere, the service was soooo slooowww. (Except the bus boy. He was on his game. Empty plates didn't stay on tables for more than a couple mins). We put in our order (Spicy veggie roll, cucumber avocado roll, veggie gyoza, Tofu Pad Thai, Tofu Coconut Red Curry, and miso soups for everyone). The soup and gyoza came out pretty quickly, we expected the rolls to come out quickly but they took almost as long as the mains, and the mains took a while. I'll start with the good - the rolls. If that's all we would've ordered, despite the slow service this place would've gotten a strong 4 if not 5 stars. Those were the best veggie sushi rolls my husband and I have ever had! The gyoza filling tasted like some kind of freezer veggie mush and the dipping sauce was strange and watered down. The soup was just Meh. But y'all... the main dishes. Hands down the WORST pad Thai we have EVER had. The noodles were either barely cooked or old and dried out .. but the kicker ... it had some kind of red looking "sauce" on it. One bite was all either of us could stomach because we were pretty sure that sus looking sauce was Ketchup. The curry wasn't AS bad, but we also only took one bite each of it. It tasted like someone used a can or two of sweetened condensed milk in it. It was so sweet that it literally tasted like a dessert and not a savory main dish. The tofu was in huge chunks that were spongy, so it seemed more like some kind of pudding or trifle instead of a curry dish. We needed something to wash the bad taste out of our mouths with, but we never got refills on our drinks. We got there early enough that we should've been leaving around the time the rush came in, but the service was so slow that we were part of the rush instead. While we were still waiting on food, my toddler's toddler bladder filled up so we had to rush to the bathroom. The line was out the door, and when we got in there we saw that one of the two stalls was out of order. The other one didn't lock. There also wasn't a changing table, so when the little one needed a new diaper I had to take her outside to change her in the car. Luckily it wasn't an issue to have the dishes removed from the check. Not sure if we'll ever be back to SPI at all, but if we do we will not be back here for anything other than a roll and a glass of water. read more

I hear so many people review, "the food takes forever!" Even though we got ours within 10 minutes of ordering. The food was amazing, and the place is classy. We came on a Saturday night around 7:50pm and the restaurant was super busy but we were able to get seats. Our server, John, was so busy but the few interactions we had we him were great! We ordered Mongolian beef, orange ck, kung pao shrimp, all came with fried rice or steamed rice and soup. Mongolian beef was the best out of the three but all were pretty good. We also ordered hawaiian poke roll, caterpiller roll, volcano tempura roll, and salmon roll. They were all good but the sushi size was smaller than what I'm used to.
