Washington Crown Center - Vacant Bon-Ton

    Washington Crown Center

Washington Crown Center is the most lively dead mall that I have ever seen! The permanent businesses include mostly small, local stores and only some national businesses such as Kay Jewelers, Marshalls, and Rural King. Many small vendors had set up tables to sell crafts, foods, and other homemade items. This mall does NOT contain enough stores for me to purchase everything that I need and want, but I still enjoyed walking around this mall, people-watching, and buying some goods. The parking lot had A LOT of pot holes and much trash. With all of the other customers' vehicles, I had to drive around for several minutes to find a spot.

To the point where it's more of a walking track than it is a mall. Years ago this was the place to be in the Washington area. Filled to the brim with stores that were desirable. I think what was a downfall of this place was a combination of a few things that happened in the area. The first was the failed shopping complex in South Strabane. Before its demise, it drew customers away. The next thing that caused decline would be the opening of the Tanger Outlets nearby. That pulled customers from here that had long standing stores that opened up in the outlet mall. Then the one of the worst things that could happen was that anchor stores started to fall. Gander Mountain closed up, followed by Macy's, then out went Bon-Ton and finally Sears just closed up last year. So yeah, this place has suffered many blows as of recent. What counts for an anchor store here now are the likes of Marshalls and Ross Dress For Less. I suppose you can say that the movie theater is an anchor and maybe whatever Rural King is. But as for the stores in between. They have become more and more of the mom and pop variety. It's better than a dead mall. They are trying. The one thing that surprised me was the food court. It actually is thriving. I don't think there was one empty spot there and it was a good variety. The building still looks the same from the last time it was renovated. With the upkeep they have been doing, this building has held up. It's actually kind of nice and feels vibrant. I hope that in the future this place rebounds. Especially with the proximity to the minor league ballpark nearby. There should be more around to do.

As soon as I entered the store, a salesperson kindly greeted me and asked if I needed any assistance. I appreciate that she acknowledged me but gave me space to browse the racks of merchandise on my own. She also made some friendly conversation with my husband who was waiting on me. Throughout the store, the clothing and accessories looked to be a high quality. I did not need any of the clothes, so I ended up picking out only a pack of socks for $18. At the checkout counter, the cashier greeted me, accurately rang up my purchase, and thanked me.

For men they offer belts, wallets, key chains, hats, baseball caps, t shirts, polo shirts, button up shirts, dress shirts, dress blazers, jackets, sweaters, sweat shirts, sweat pants, sneakers, casual and dress shoes, cologne and much more. Prices are kind of high to be a outlet but, you can really clean up when they have a sale. I picked up a $125 Polo shirt for $17! What I really love about this store is their huge selection of Polo merchandise. They have Polos in colors I have never seen before and I have a ton of them! The women's section is just as well stocked as the men's. They also carry jewelry and accessories for the ladies as well. The kids section also offers a lot of cute Polo clothing for the little ones in sizes from new born all the way to pre teens. The customer service is always outstanding as well! Insider tip: Be sure to sign up for their free email list so they can send you coupons and let you know when their sales are.

During my visit, I saw a wide variety of merchandise. I saw couches, rugs, electric fireplaces, clothing, shoes, children's toys, bedding and other linens, cleaning supplies, foods and beverages, health and beauty products, pet supplies, small electronics, holiday decorations, etcetera. I specifically looked for kitchen towels and slippers, but I did not find any in either my preferred color or size. Instead, I ended up buying only a toothbrush, toothpaste, and wrapping paper. I felt surprised that the large roll of wrapping paper was on clearance for only $0.74! The cashier accurately rang up my merchandise, and she gave me change for my small purchase. I must admit that the couches here were comfortable and cost only a few hundred dollars. Perhaps I should buy another couch for my basement...

Big Lots has an impressive selection of everything under the sun that you might want…read more Unfortunately, their inventory management is so poor that if you are looking for something specific they claim to have, you will never find it. Came here with a simple goal: find Archway Molasses Cookies (the original regular kind, not the iced kind), an item their online portal claimed this location had plenty of. When I visited to try to find them, it was a pain to even find where the cookies were in general, let alone the Archway varieties. When I did locate them, the one I wanted was not to be found. I waited in line in the front of the store only to be told that they could not look up my item, and I had to go check with the employee in their furniture area. If that makes sense to you, you're a better man/woman than I. The furniture section employee was kind enough to check to see if there were any in the back, though after ten minutes he returned to say that there weren't any and their numbers must be wrong. So, this begs the question: what is the point of even having an online, customer-facing inventory if the store makes no effort to keep it up to date? This is a problem that seems to be prevalent in many brick and mortar stores these days, which should tell you something about the future of such entities. Given my experience with this, I doubt I will return to a Big Lots any time soon. It shouldn't be this hard for a customer to hunt down a product. Overall: 3.0 stars --- Pros: - Good overall selection of goods, though it was mostly in disarray. - Plenty of parking in the lot outside. - Nice of the furniture section guy to check for us... Cons: - ...though I'm still unclear why the cashier couldn't check when we had waited a while to get up to them. - The Big Lots inventory management system is less than useless, and it takes a conscientious team to make it work.
