The little old lady apologized about not taking cards herself, but described the whereabouts of the closest ATM, and also said she could really recommend another Japanese restaurant nearby that did. At this point, a customer, a gentle lady in her 40ies, joined the conversation, saying she Really wanted this place, which is best in town. After taking stock of prices and the menu, she was off, and I ordered my own bento and sat down. The Romanian woman returns, shares that she doesn't have much experience with sushi and wonders what to have. She soon decides she'll have the medium sushi the other woman just had, and sits down, too. The shopkeeper asks for help asking her if she wants the octopust or not, which she does. We chat for a bit, the TV in the background showing the latest Japanese news in Japanese at a pleasant background volume, and we soon get each of our meals. Mine is delightfully varied, the sushi tasting fresh and going a little creatively beyond the "Swedish" standard sushi assortment, and it's really rather filling. My now lady friend finishes hers too, and notes she is still a little hungry, and the little shop keeper comes out with a little tray of five more pieces of sushi, on the house. Joy, gratitude and delight ensues. Meanwhile, a third woman is asking the shop keeper about the contents of california rolls, and first gets the ingredients -- rice, crabfish, cucumber, a little mayonnaise, and then a sample piece. She loves it, and orders a bunch, happily convinced. Don't miss this place. It is a true gem of everything good about Japanese culture.

The noodles were carefully tucked and folded into a bed, then the torch-seared char siu was layered on top. Then, the generous portions of onions, bamboo, and a perfectly-cooked egg. Yum. The restaurant itself is umarked on the outside. Once you find it, you will enter into a minimalistic space where the natural light bounces off the warm grey walls. The stop into the noodle shop will be quick. The rigid bar stools don't encourage you to longer long, because after every last perfectly cooked noodle has been slurped up, a new patron will enter into this oasis for a hot, satisfying bowl.

We had to wait just a couple of minutes for two tables to open up but it was well worth the wait. The menu is limited, but I appreciate that they are serving what they know they have perfected. My husband and I both ordered the shoyu ramen. The broth is so flavorful and the pork is so thinly sliced, which I appreciate. I don't do runny yoke in an egg, but my husband enjoyed that component. The woman working in the restaurant was so friendly and quick to tend to our table. This is a hidden gem that you should check out if you like ramen!
