This nursery is deep in the country and that's how they do. When you arrive, you're not quite sure you're in the right place and when you walk up to the office, there's a chill cat laying on the desk with a calm and friendly guy to greet you. "Take cart 3", they say, and soon you find yourself driving around the 16 acres in a golf cart, throwing plants into the back and marveling at the backdrop of the ko'olau mountains. It is not fancy by any means, prepare to get muddy if it's rainy, but the plants are reasonably priced and go by size of the pot $5 for smallest pot and goes from there. The uncle running the place was so kind and offered to bring us boxes and help but we brought a tarp for the backseat and our plants made it home safely. A great adventure for the plant lover and off roading golf cart enthusiast. read more

Absolutely love this nursery and worth the drive from central part of Oahu. This place is huge with so many selections and prices are reasonable ( $5-7 for the small pots, $20+ for the next size...dependent on type of plants). They give you a golf cart to drive around and pick your plants, which provide perfect sun cover. I picked up some Arica Palms, Manila Palms, Foxtails, Crotons, and a few other tropical plants. Service was excellent. The staff provided directions where to find specific ones we were searching. read more

I cannot recommend Koba's Nursery enough friendly, and affordable, what's not to love? First off, the trek here is beautiful. I love any reason to make a drive out to the Windward side and the drive to Koba's is always worth it. Second, the property in itself is incredible. It's organic beauty and majesty of the Ko'olau mountains is unmatched. The property is huge... I mean, big enough that you need a golf cart to get around. How cool is that? My girlfriend and I decided to adventure out of our usual Kaneohe-Kailua routine to do some plant shopping. We were able to find a diverse mix of tropical and exotic plants--even some plants I swear I've never seen before. It was nice to just roam the property and kind of get lost in all of the greenery. If you're looking for a new houseplant or looking to just get outside--I can't recommend this place enough! read more

I always stop by Koba's when I return home to see family. This place is HUGE and their selection of plants is unreal. You're not going to find too many "rare" houseplants, but they have a bunch of native and non-native plants that are beautiful. I wanted to buy a small coconut tree, of the variety that is often called a "Sāmoan coconut"; only Koba's Nursery had some for sale. They quite honestly said the trees were so young that they couldn't be absolutely sure they were Sāmoan. So, what I did was buy 3, and figured surely one of them would turn out to be Sāmoan. After several years, we think all 3 are truly Sāmoan! So, I contacted Koba's again, and their employee, Steven Laba, came out to plant the tallest of the 3 trees in my backyard. Steven did a great job, he gave me lots of useful advice, and was very friendly! He charged me $50 for his work, and then he paid me $80 to take the remaining 2 trees and the 3 pots back to Koba's to nurture for future customers. Thank you Steven! read more

Koba's is located in Waimanalo not far off Kal Hwy. It's so beautiful up here with the mountains looming overhead. There's plenty parking and no restroom facilities. They usually close by 3pm so go early. They don't carry fruit trees, it's mostly hedges and flowers. A lot of beautiful crotons, ixora, hibiscus, plumeria, and bougainvillea (only certain colors). For such a large property, they keep them all very organized! They are grouped by variety and size. The small ones are $2 and $3, medium pots $5, bigger $20, and I believe there are some even larger pots with big trees. The plants for the most part looked very healthy and well cared for. The employees were all super nice and helpful with pointing out plant names and locations. And yes the golf carts were super duper fun. We picked a cool day which made it all even more enjoyable. Just driving the golf cart around their beautiful property was a nice experience in itself. We had our 3 kids with us and they of course had a blast zipping around (safely of course). One really great thing that happened to me during the pandemic is that I'm not a plant mom! Since we were doing home renovations, we've been going to home improvement stores and I've been perusing the home garden section a lot but realized, I should just go to a plant nursery! So I searched it up on my handy dandy Yelp app and Koba's Nursery was first to pop up. So I made the journey out to the beautiful side of Waimanalo and visited. I went early because I like to have an early start to my day and figured it wouldn't be too hot. We got there and were one of the first to arrive. The staff are super sweet and the nursery is expansive that they let you take a golf cart around as you look for your future plants! Right at the front they have a green house with all your plants that need indirect light like your pothos, monsteras and more. What I was really looking for was a white birds of paradise. But it was a little hard to tell, LUCKILY, I had an app just for the occasions called PictureThis, all your plant parents out there must know what I'm talking about - but if you have a better one, lmk! I ended up leaving with two plants I didn't think I'd come for - a white ginger lily and a..my app identified it as a Bird of Paradise, but I know it's not.. Haha Let me know if you know what it is! I'll share a photo. Especially during the pandemic, it was really great to support local and it's cheaper to get plants grown locally. I have not visited too many nurseries on Oahu, but of the ones that I have visited, Koba's is my favorite. Located in the back of Waimanalo Koba's is very east to find. No need worry if you're not familiar with Waimanolo. You're going to find it on first crack. The place is big. Ask if can use one of the golf carts to cruise around. Plenty rain back in The Valley so make sure you call before you go. If raining too much they probably going close for the day. Prices super good. Save money. Buy plenty. Recommended you bring junk slippers, and clean slippers to go home. Can get muddy. Plus bring wipes to clean up. read more

A special way to explore a large nursery - golf carts! I think that this makes this such a unique experience and the proprietor is so friendly and easy going. We were a bit lost wandering around but so what - we were there to enjoy. No signage does the plants so ask questions or use an app to identify plants. We grabbed 3 and each was $5!! Definitely gotta buy something at least for using their golf cart. Overall we went bc my in laws love plants and it was a different way to explore. We are so lucky to live here and have options like this only a half hour away from city center. Koba's was the first stop of our plant nursery hopping excursion in Waimanalo and it started with a bang! After I parked, we started roaming around perusing the first lot with no staff in sight. We all of a sudden noticed two girls driving around in a golf cart loading the trunk with plants. I immediately knew we had to figure out how to rent one too! We found Mr. Koba himself and asked him the pricing breakdown since we noticed the plants didn't have any signs to notate the name of the plant or cost. He explained that the 1 gallon plants are $5-7, 3 gallons are $15 - 20, and 7 gallons are $35 or more. Mr. Koba also told us that they've had this nursery since 1985 and he is teaching his sons to take over the business. More reason to support a local, family owned business! Before we even asked, he already pointed us in the direction of the golf carts to use for shopping! It was so much fun touring their large property in the golf cart and made shopping so convenient because a) it provides shade and b) you can haul all of your plants in the trunk. It felt like we were doing a self guided tour! This is a great nursury for people wanting larger, heartier outdoor plants for landscaping or to place on your lanai that gets full sun. Really wanted to start my garden so my best friend and I decided to Nursery Hop through the island. We started in Kaneohe and spent some time at a few, we really wanted to keep it with local businesses and there is still so much to choose from. We stumbled on a great review for Koba's Nursery and decided to check it out. After being there for ten minutes we cut the rest of the stops we were going to make and spent the rest of the day here. Very country and the mountains are right there which is such a beautiful sight. They recommended us to grab a golf cart because there was a lot of ground to cover, and they were NOT joking! It's 16 acres of land to explore and they had plants from nearly every selection. I loved that they made the dirt party's extremely easy and even if you're new to riding in a gold cart and worried about running over the plants; they have literally made it easy for everyone. Every path connects so you don't have to reverse if yo come to a dead end. There is so much to choose from and with our haul I was expecting it to be at least $50 because it used to Home Depot pricing, but in the end I paid $22 for my four plants and my friend paid $4 for hers. It's definitely worth a trip to Nalo. DONT FORGET TO WEAR SHOES! It's not required but our feet were muddy and covered with dirt by the end of it, not complaining because we didn't expect this at all but it's a good tip read more

Came here last Saturday "just because". The wife is in search of some flowers for the yard so we decided to take a tour of some of the nurseries. Got to the place and luckily another customer let us know to go to the office and they'll give you a Golf cart to borrow and to roam around and look at their selection. Couldn't find exactly what we were looking for (lehua, Ilima, bird of paradise) but picked up some red tea leaves and a dwarf allamanda plant. The experience driving around their property on a golf cart was really fun and they did have a great selection. Just not specifically what we were looking for. Such a cool place! You can borrow a golf cart and cruise all over their property. We bought a ti plant and a small bright croton. I didn't see any veggies unfortunately, but loved their huge selection of hibiscus, palms and other landscape plants. You won't find this selection at Lowe's or Home Depot. Very unique experience and love how it's set up. They do not sanitize the golf carts in between use. No problem - just bring sanitizing wipes and you're set. read more

We stumbled up this nursery while driving through Kailua today and I wanted to find something for my father. We were offered a golf cart to drive around the 16 acres and it was such an amazing experience. I know it's just a nursery but the fact that you get to drive a golf cart to enjoy the beauty of the nursery plus the mountains is truly breathtaking. We picked up a pot of tiare for $20 that was 2"? A drive to the country side is always relaxing. Drive down Waimanalo side and head towards the mountains you can find Kobas nursery. I usually call him uncle when I see him and he always know I'm looking for a certain plant because it's hard to come around and everyone always buys it. Koba is a nice guy also his staff is nice and friendly as well. Parking is alright if you don't mind the mud on a rainy day. Everyday my sons ask if we can go back to the nursery again!! I do plan to go back to continue our garden project. I found this place on Yelp after taking a wrong turn in Waimanalo. Instead of looking for the original nursery I planned to visit, I headed to Koba's. It must have been fate because it was one of the best nursery experiences ever! My boys and I spent the whole morning at Koba's exploring the various fields and plants. How did we get around the acres of amazing plants and flowers? By golf cart of course!!! I love the variety of plants here, but driving your own golf cart to explore their fields was the experience that sets itself apart from any other nursery I've been to!! All the staff we passed were very friendly. They didn't try to pressure us to move it along and return the cart or make a sale. They even gave my boys seeds to feed the chicks. I bought a bunch of Japanese garden plants and when I'm ready for more, I will be returning (to adventure again in our own golf cart)! read more

Afternoon trip with my 2 sons to the nursery well worth the drive. Driveway a little hidden but trust the sign marking it. Greeted as we walked up by super friendly uncles working at the office. They quickly offered us to take a golf cart to drive around the large nursery. My sons of course took turns driving while I worked the BRAKE! Nice selection of plants and even better prices compared to the big box stores. Ended up with a couple starters and a lot of pictures for our next visit. Uncle gave us a discount as we checked out. As a townie, I hardly go to the countryside, or the boonies, as I call it. Over the years, though, I have found a lot of interesting stuff in the boonies. One of them is Koba's Nursery in Waimanalo, which is on agriculture-zoned land. Its kind of hard to find, as there is greenery no matter which way you turn. And to get there, you turn here, there, and here again, and there again.....that's why I call it the boonies. But what a gem of a nursery - I would go to the boonies anytime to go to Koba's Nursery. For the longest time, I was trying to spruce up my yard by planting some colorful plants. So off I went to Home Depot, Lowe's, City Mill, Don Quiote, and a few local stores in town. All of them were very limited in their inventory, and the plants just didn't look healthy and vibrant. Plus, the sales people could not answer my specific questions. After going back periodically, I still could not find anything that I really liked. A friend then referred me to a nursery in Waimanalo, Koba's Nursery (as a townie, I wasn't about to drive there myself; I had my friend drive me there...LOL!), . I was in awe when I saw so many plants that were offered on their 16 acres of land. Some of the varieties were: Trees - fern, tulip wood, orange koa Palms - Areca, Manilla, Macarthur Shrubs & flowering plants - hibiscus, ixora, gardenia, ti, anthurium, grapette (slight fragrance of grapes!), ginger, croton Ground covers - dwarf juniper, grapette, heather Ferns - lauae, kupukupu, palapalai As I'm by no means a plant expert, I did not know what I had wanted, other than colorful flowering plants that were easy to take care of. The owner of the nursery, Carl Kobashigawa (that's where Koba's come from), took me on a grand tour in a golf cart so that I could see the the hundreds of different types of plants that he had.at his nursery. I thought that was cool - riding in a golf cart at a nursery (instead of walking)! Since then, I've gone a number of times when I needed plants. Here's what I thought about my experiences in getting plants from this nursery: - Carl, as well as his two assistants, Greg and Lettie, are very knowledgeable about their plants (he also has other workers that tend to the many plants) . They helped me select the plants I wanted by asking me certain things, such as where I had planned to plant them, as they didn't want me to get a plant that would grow too big for the area intended. They informed me of the necessary sunlight, fertilizers, watering, soil, and pesticide care that certain plants require and if I were willing to follow the necessary care instructions . Based on what I told them, they advised me as to whether or not to get certain plants. - Carl and staff gave me their honest opinions, as they wanted to ensure that the plants would grow well (I'm sure that if they didn't, my plants would have since died, and I would probably never buy from them again). - As they have an inventory of each plant, they took the time to choose the best plants of the lot, instead of randomly selecting the plants that I had wanted to purchase. Now that's what I call excellent customer service! During the times I've been there, I also found out: - If Koba's does not have the plants that you want or what they recommend, they will refer you to another nursery to purchase them. - If the plants that you want are at a lesser cost at another nursery, they will send you to the other nursery to buy them if Koba's is unable to match the lower cost. - Prices are reasonable at Koba's Nursery and are at a lower cost than at the retail stores because you are going straight to the grower (as compared to buying a plant at a store and knowing that the store will have to take its cut). - Koba's sells his plants to landscaper companies and to the public like you and me only; none of their plants are sold to retail stores. Koba's Nursery is a wholesale and retail business, and has been around for more than 20 years. I was so happy to get the plants that were selected for me - purple grapettes, white and red anthuriums, orange ixora, red ti, and dwarf junipers. (See my grapette and ixora photos to see how well they're doing and compare them with the grapette plant seedling and potted ixora that I initially bought from Koba's.) Their excellent service is so personalized, and they have such knowledgeable staff that regular stores do not have the time or expertise to provide. And their plants are so healthy and green. Just don't go to Koba's Nursery when it's raining or after a big rain - sloshing in the mud, tracking mud into your car, and having your car tires packed with mud can be a total mess and pain. On any other day, this will be an excuse for this townie to become more familiar with the boonies! read more
