I personally think the Darlington Music Centre is one of the best music stores we've had in Darlington, the staff are friendly and always very willing and helpful. The prices are pretty competitive and if appropriate they have been willing to negotiate in the past. For a music store in a small town they also have a decent selction of guitars including big name originals like Gibson, Fender and PRS. Also for those of you wanting to learn how to play an instrument you can enquire in store for guitar lessons or drum lessons, in fact you can take the drum lessons at the back of the store so you don't need a drum kit and don't need to annoy your neighbours (until you decide you're serious about it!;)

Now proprietor Elliot has relocated to a small area half way up the stairs in Space's new multi-stall complex just off Parliament Street. The whole place is worth a look - fun stalls and a cool bar upstairs. But nestling between is a vinyl junkie's mini-paradise. The accent is on older music - 60s and 70s, country rock, psychedelia, blues, bluegrass, west coast... You'll find some punk and indie in here too, and it's worth spending some time browsing through the racks as well as the amazing slices of premium vinyl on the walls. CDs are available but vinyl dominates. You'll also find some cool collectors stuff - there was an AC/DC promo boiler suit last time I looked for instance, and some really excellent posters for various other bands and stuff behind the counter. Elliot is on hand to offer his well-informed opinion - and he knows an awful lot about the music he sells I should add - and remains a music enthusiast who is happy to share a story over a tune or two. If there's stuff you're after give him a list and see how he does. I did that and within a week he'd found me a couple of bits of vinyl I was looking for. Quality service. With a lack of music collector's shops in the area this place was greeted with utter delight my myself and my friends. They have a massive range of musical instruments, accessories and music. The guitar showroom upstairs is awesome with some spectacular guitars on offer. If they don't have it in stock and it's available they will get it for you. All the staff are musicians so they know what they're talking about and they are not condescending towards those of lesser ability (I'm not that good a guitarist). They will set up and tune guitars to your specification; free when purchasing a new guitar. They have a great selection of amps too. The prices are very competitive to any other store in the country so no need to travel to get what you want.

I tried to buy them online, but the prices are outrageous/way over retail. I think I found out about Vinyl Tap because they sell through Amazon, although I ordered directly from their website (vinyltap.co.uk). I loved the fact that they are a small, independent record shop with a brick and mortar store in the UK. I think Vinyl Tap's website is easy to use and they had the three albums I needed. There is a button on their website where you can change the currency and they ship internationally. I thought the prices were incredibly fair and the shipping costs weren't bad! After I placed the order, it took about three weeks to arrive (I picked the slowest option). The records were packaged well and arrived in perfect condition. They were shrink wrapped and the store put an extra outer record sleeve on each one. They also included a printout of the other Taylor Swift albums they have. I thought that was so cool. I am very happy with my purchase and I look forward to buying more records from Vinyl Tap.

Probably one of the few places worth a visit in the dreaded Metro centre, this music shop sells…read morequite a range of instruments and a decent selection of books. There was a sale on last time I visited and I managed to grab a few good buys on the books. Plenty of pianos are displayed around the centre of the shop floor with the guitar section to the right side. There is the usual 'music shop' vibe which eminates throughout. It's the feeling you get in a mixed room of music professionals, students, bedroom musicians and dads who want their son to become rock stars (because they never got the chance to be one). Prices are more or less the same as Window's (see other review). Staff are helpful and they can order books in for you if they're out of stock. I'd like that one, that one and that one please.
