    Sunny day knafeh
    Andy Q.

If this isn't intriguing enough for you: what is? A new food sensation for Sydney, a back story (pastries bringing cultures together often in conflict in the Middle East) and bakers with big beards, Palestinean brothers serving Jerusalem street food. By chance this morning, I see on Facebook that they're at Moore Park Entertainment Quarter today. As they've been at other locations fairly far away from me, this seemed like a good chance. I thought they'd set up a regular food stall in the market, but no: this is a whole event! It's a shipping container, it's an entire lawn of people hanging out: it's an event. The guy serving up the orders has a microphone and is doing a comedy routine to call out names of orders, there's a buzz in the air, there's curiosity. And the Knafeh (as explained helpfully by the comedian, the K is pronounced, sort of like kuh-nah-fay)? My god. Delicious. And exactly what I want as a reward for my foodie expedition. They only serve knafehs (and mint tea I think). I had no idea what to expect. But it's what I love: something simple, done well, true to a culture, and a novelty. And absolutely delicious, reminding me a bit of a custard, or a crème caramel, but a soft, not-too-sweet, cheese, a thin crunch of semolina on top, eaten out of a wide shallow paper container. Wikipedia says it's cheese pastry soaked in sweet sugar-based syrup; the tiny cardboard box that it comes in, like a pizza box, says 'Jerusalem street food'. We got one each, they're too tasty to share. Eight bucks. All hail! If it comes to your neighbourhood, and even if it doesn't, track it down.

If you only have two things on your menu you better be doing them well. And my goodness have the bearded boys of Knafeh perfected their art! Knafeh and mint tea are the call of the hour - sadly the tea was all sold out by the time I got to the front of the line at this shipping container good "truck", but the wait was worth it for the pillowy, silky and somewhat stretchy cheese custard lying underneath that satisfying crack under the spoon of toasted cinnamon sugar. Seating is just milk crates and tables the same with a bit of ply on top, so best to avoid short short if you don't want chequerboard thighs. But even if it's standing room only, the boys make you want to get on your feet as they blast their music, sing along, drum on the sides of the shopping container and dance on the countertop. It's Coyote Ugly for ladies but with better music and infinitely better wares to sell.

This pop up food truck place seems to be very popular on Saturday night. It was not easy to find this place because "George Khattar Lane Parramatta" does not exist in Google Map. If you just follow "64 Phillip St Parramatta", then you'll find this food truck easily. They only have 3 things in the menu: Knafeh, Lemonade and bottled water. The friendly people from food truck will gladly chat to you about anything. Served warm, you can taste the sweet syrupy cheese pastry in your mouth. You can enjoy this while sitting down by Parramatta River. Don't forget to bring a picnic rug.

At the time I was there, there was only one other person who sat indoors. The interior design of this restaurant is modern yet elegant - had some middle eastern touches on its design. Upon looking at the sample menu in the front, my eyesight glued upon chicken pilavs (Turkish style risotto) as it has cream sauce and was pan tossed with sliced mushrooms, cubed chickens and shallots. It was definitely tasty like what the menu described. It has lemony taste, the pilavs was soft yet chewy and the cream was in right proportion to linger the tastebuds. It was still hot when it was served and realized that just after I put a spoonful of it in the mouth. Tried the lemon lime bitters. It was actually soda with syrup. Was fizzy when it was served and you would need to stir the bottom to mix the beverage. Was pretty good as it has strong fruity taste that I yearn for. Overall, price wise it was pretty high for me but probably on the normal range for Australian market. The lady who served me was also cheerful and asked me how was the food. Seemed like many people had commented "loved it" that she wasn't responding to my comment. Will be back again if I'm craving for more risottos.

We ordered a lot of food! The Sahra Feast, Labne, Kibbe. The food started arriving and its was a big WOW. First the Labne sprinkled with a bit of dried mint and a big drizzle of EVOO. The large individual bag of Pita was probably the best we have ever had. Perfectly thin in my opinion the closest to Lebanese Bread that I grew up eating. The Kibbe was of course my favorite thing. And Sahra's is perfect. Then the Feast arrived. We looked at each other and wondered how we were going to eat all of the food. The Lamb skewer was our favorite followed by the Kafta...the poor chicken skewer just couldn't compete!!! But it was delicious but just chicken. The Feast had had hummus, baba ghannous, tabouli, pickles and garlic sauce. Everything just down right awesome. Service was great which only enhances the atmosphere. Highly recommend. Will definitely return when visiting Australia.

We were the last lunch table to join and the team was swift and efficient. The food was delicious and better than we expected. The chicken skewers were the best of the three - super tender and flavorful. The Fattoush was fresh and topped with crispy pita that was great dipped in the hummus and baba ganoush that were part of the grill plate. We split these three dishes between two of us and couldn't finish it all -- fresh, flavorful and a lovely setting overlooking the River.

We ordered pretty much everything on the menu. Chicken, fries, extra garlic sauce (toum.. twice), tabouleh, fattouch, a kafts sando, and more chicken. The char-grilled chicken was cooked to perfection. Juicy, flavorful and smokey, just how we like it. The tabbouleh needed a bit of extra lemon squeezes but really hit the spot. Fries - superb. Extra thick and crunchy which is how I like mine thankfully.. other Lebos like them thin and lanky. The kafta needed some more moisture, but was good. Get a side of the pickles to pair sour with salty along the way. I'm salivating just writing this. I wish SO badly that they would open up a store in San Francisco. On my second visit, I discovered that you need to specify which plate size to get and then you can point and pick what you want. The big plates seem to be good value for parties or events. There's hardly any labels at their displays so it's hard to know what exactly it is that you're getting if you're not familiar with what they are. I think we've tried the sfoof and one flavour of their baklava, which are now both my favourites. They are pretty sweet and can get a bit sickening if you eat too much at one go, but delicious nonetheless, and great to get the garlic smell off your breath after a meal at nearby El Jannah. There are some tables and chairs for eating in, I reckon it would be good to get a group of friends together and get one of everything to get a sampler of what they have.

Mister Gee confirms their location, opening time, and the one burger they'll serve for the week, sporadically on their Facebook page, and are only open Thursday to Saturday (for now). Let's put something fatty and heavy...on something else that's fatty and heavy but super sweet which overpowers the burger. Anyways if you like brioche bun burgers more power to you...but I hate them. That being said, Mister Gee's burgers work well with their buns and don't overwhelm the burger itself, so good on them for that. By the way if you didn't know, Mister Gee's only showcases one burger each week out of their 4 burgers: The Truffe, Fatboy, Cheese Boogie, and Chicken. Rocked up on a Thursday and the line was already 30 deep around 645pm, so the wait was roughly half an hour. Not a fan of queues, but they're there for a reason. This week was the Truffe Burger, and I naturally had to order a double. This burger is supposedly the favourite one among the staff, so I had expectations but I tempered them too. The dirty fries were also on showcase, so had to order those as well. The dirty fries were decent, but whoever made them didn't salt them properly as the salt was distributed unevenly....mega salty in the middle and barely salted on the edges. Not sure I'd order these again unless they fixed that up. The Truffe was pretty good...I wasn't expecting it to be, but I had no qualms with this burger, especially at $13 for a double. The truffle oil with the mayo and cheese went well with the grass fed Tasmanian beef patty. Did I enjoy this burger more than the Bronx at Five Points? Yes I did...I'm definitely keen to try the Cheese Boogie and Fat Boy now. My only gripe (besides the fries) is that this place isn't the most accessible if you live by the CBD, but if you live by inner west you should by all means go.
