Two stars only because of the price. Every other aspect of the experience is negative. The guy running the place is a moron. I think the exhaust fumes have killed too many brain cells. Check your paperwork when you pay. He billed me for someone else's car. Check for left over tools in the engine bay. I now have a new set of clamps and screwdriver. And make sure to get a receipt confirming that the DMV in Sacramento received a passing smog check. After trying to renew my registration online, I found that the test results were not transmitted. I have nothing but great things to say about this place! I called beforehand to find out the cost and if I needed to make an appointment. A nice gentleman named Rod answered the phone and I immediately could tell this was the place for me! He reminded me of my Dad. :) He was professional and kind on the phone. When I arrived, he was just as professional in person and got me in and out quickly even with a quickly forming line of customers. He also played good music in his garage, so that's an added bonus while you wait. I think the word is out that this is the place to go because as it neared the lunch hour it got pretty busy. As a woman, it's always nice to find a place that does work on your car that you can trust and you don't feel like they will take advantage of you. I came at 1:00 PM on a Saturday, with one car in the bay. The proprietor asked me to fill out a form while he finished the previous test. His inspection was thorough, the test procedure completed with minimal fuss and my 20 year old car was out the door with a passing grade in about 20 minutes. I did not hear any untoward language, nor anything other than polite discourse with me and the three other men and women who came in while my car was being tested. Definitely keep your AAA card handy, the $10 discount is available. Now I know where to go for smog tests. I'm always expecting and prepared to deal with toughguy know-it-all mechanics, but when I met the guy today, I was actually greeted...pleasantly! And they didn't charge me extra because my vehicle is a diesel, or because it's a high-top Sprinter van, or because it's a converted RV. Just got my smog test done here. No appointment needed, very fast and efficient. It literally took the time I walked to Starbucks and back. The guy really knows his stuff and gave me some great free advice - my "homework assignment " apparently! He'd immediately spotted that rats had entered my engine because of marks on my wheels! Seriously! He explained how to get rid of them (Bounce sheets!) and exactly what I needed to do. So although I left freaked out (by the rats) I'm really glad I came. Definitely recommend. read more

I was referred to KM via phone by a nice lady at Sorrento Valley Automotive, who said that they didn't do smog checks even though their Yelp page has them listed as so. I was skeptical when I first called KM because the man who answered the phone was a bit gruff. He told me there were not appointments and checks were done on a "first come, first served" basis and that the cost was $59. He seemed a little annoyed when I asked if that was the base cost or total including DMV filing and such, but assured me that it was the total. It sounded a bit high but it was conveniently located near my work and it was nearing my lunch hour. I found a $10 off coupon online and decided to go for it. When I arrived at the shop, which was on the NE corner of Del Mar Heights & Mango, I was helped immediately. Although Jim grumbled at me for not having my DMV renewal form (whoops), he looked up my info on his computer and went right to work. While he was performing the check, I noticed a large doggie bed and blanket, chew toys, a medium link chain, and a fan. I assumed the dog was a medium or large breed with long or thick hair. After Jim was done and doing my paperwork 15 minutes later, he was much more personable and told me a funny story about another customer with a Miata. I asked where the dog was and found out "big grumpy Jim" had a little chihuahua named Chico LOL! I was out the door within 20 minutes with a smile on my face :) read more

So glad to find this star certified smog check station. Technician Rod was very professional and helpful. The fees were also reasonable. Both are reasons why I will be returning to this business. The smog check station we used to go to for the past several years is just 1 exit away from interstate 5 highway, but latest new owner has completely replaced the crew (old crew was professional and helpful like Rod at KM ) and hiked up the prices almost 2x (!) and charge for every smog check regardless of pass or fail. read more

Did a Yelp search for a certified star smog center. It's next to the gas station at 7-eleven. I came around 11am and was out of there in 15 minutes! I was pleasantly surprised and completely happy about my experience here. I don't usually write reviews, but if you're in the Del Mar or Carmel valley area, this is a must-go to place. Jim is fast and funny, and if you've got time, say hi to Chico his singing Chihuahua! Just bring Jim your smog test DMV paper (with a bar code he scans) and he gets to work. Grab a snack and a drink at the adjoining 7-11 and when you're done, chances are he will be too! If you have a question about whether or not your car will pass (for example, if you have a check engine light on) ask first. The best way to get there is to head West on Del Mar Heights Rd from the 5, hang a right on Mango Dr (light), right in the second drive way. Jim is the epitome of the average working Joe - straight shooter, tell it like it is, and a master of his trade. Walk up to the garage, fill out a sheet of paper, BRING YOUR DMV REGISTRATION RENEWAL NOTICE, hand over the keys and the check is done in under 20 minutes. It would be done sooner if the DMV would process the paper work as fast as it takes Jim to administer the test; but that's out of our hands. A quick, no nonsense SMOG check and $10 off coupon aren't even the best part of this place. There's seating!! And not just any seats... 2 couches that look like they were salvaged from the front of someone's lawn. You know, the several shades of brown, with flower print, and dark wood lining. I was actually in a very good mood when I came here to get my smog check. There was one car in front of me so I parked in front of the building thinking I'll move my car later and wait in the car while he is working on the other car. I walked in, saw the paperwork on a clip board, and proceeded to fill it out. The one tech came up to me and said, you need to move your car and I said, sure that's fine. I said when you're done, I'll be in my car can you come get me? He said that is unacceptable, I don't do business like that. The client that was in the lobby gave me the look like I can't believe he just said that. I gave her the same look back. Wow! What is unacceptable sir? You could've told me in a nice way, what you preferred. I could've waited in the lobby on your 40 year old couch (I have nothing against the couch). I would've been happy to! A simple greeting when you saw me or maybe even a smile would've been nice. It pays to be nice to people! Don't be such a Scrooge especially if you are running a business. If life is that bad, maybe it's time for you to retire because obviously you are not happy and you don't need to infect people with that bad aura and attitude. Pulled up to the gate to get a smog test, and was greeted with "YOU CANT PARK THERE!!" I simply replied "I don't want to park here, I came to get a smog check." And quickly was told to go park somewhere else because "it was too busy and too much bullsh*t going on around the gas station" for him to open the chain at that moment... After filling out the paper work as requested I was bombarded with extremely rude remarks and horrible customer service. In the end I was told that "we are done here" as he pulls my information that I had just finished filling out and he ripped it up as he walked to the back and hid. My girlfriend and I looked at each other in disbelief as we walked out. Will NEVER give this station business again. Straight A**hole. My girlfriend won't even buy gas there anymore even though they're not associated. DO NOT GO HERE. read more

Disappointing. Went here a few months back. Based on yelp reviews I chose this place but my experience was less than 5 stars. Went in on my lunch hour and was told they could not see me. Even though there was only one car in front of me. They wanted me to come back 3 hours later or another day. I cant understand a business not providing their services advertised during normal business hours.
