Things to like about Beckman Park as a dog park (big dog area): (1)HUGE. Your pup can run and run…read moreand run. (2) Shade. Plenty of trees on the upper areas of the park for those days when your pup wants to run but you want to loaf in the shade. (3) Huge. Yes, I know I already said it was huge, but it really is. (4) Poop bag dispensers near each of the entry gates. (5) Some users are good citizens - putting found toys (balls, discs, etc) near the gates for their owners to find, randomly filling the water bowls, etc. Things where Beckman Park could be better: (1) Both entries to the large dog area are single gates, so it's easy for dogs to slip past others trying to get in/out, and escape out to the street. (2) The poop bag dispensers are not always stocked, so bring a bag or two of your own, just in case. (3) Some dog owners do not pick up after their dogs, so lawn grenades can be a problem. (4) The park is bisected into an off-leash area and a leashed area, but the dividing line is not fenced. It IS marked by a sign, but my dog can't read. (5) There is no water available in the big dog area for dogs. Hence, the good citizens who provide water randomly. Most of the owners - and dogs - using this park are friendly and easy going. If your dog gets a little rambunctious, a sincere apology is usually all it takes to clear the air. Dogs being dogs, they like to sniff each others' butts and chase each other around, and most owners seem to understand that.

Love taking the pups to this park…read more As mentioned in the other reviews, this park does have 3 separate areas for dogs of all sizes. Large dogs, small dogs and a space to train your dogs. We typically go to all three areas and truly enjoy the spaces. I have two smaller sized dogs and they get so excited coming to the park. Several of the owners are very friendly, clean up after their dogs and seem to also keep coming back. The park does get pretty muddy during rain seasons due to the lack of grass in some areas but overall we let the dogs enjoy it all either way. There are sidewalks for walking along the edges. There are benches to sit on but just be mindful this is where all the dogs lift their legs and do their business. The gates are a little tricky to open but definitely not child proof. Enjoy!

It's paved and flat so if you want to push a stroller, or just want a nice easy level walk, it's perfect. There is a large green space that we utilize to play with our dog and I have seen people use it to play soccer or picnic as well. Dogs are definitely welcome here as we have seen many other fur babies and they offer bags for cleaning up after your dog at multiple locations in the park. I will say that the biggest negative to this park for me is the lack of shade. It was brand new when we first started coming so the trees were still growing, but even after a few years there is still very little shade and it is all along the edges. There is also a pit of some sort that I assumed they would be landscaping but as of now it's still just a large empty hole with dirt and dead grass. There is a small picnic area with tables and garbages but zero shade. We have used it more than once to grab some food and have a little meal at the park when the weather is nice. That area is surrounded by really gorgeous flora including lavender and irises, sage, thyme and more. They also have a nice playground area that is separated into a couple different sections and has an area of covered seating as well. It's new and nicely organized so things don't get to crowded. The only parking available is street parking so it can get a little congested but I really enjoy this park and I will definitely continue coming here.

Their massive canopies provide plenty of shade and create a peaceful place to relax, even on warm Central Valley afternoons. The park is well maintained, with open green space, a playground, and plenty of room for families to spread out and enjoy the day. Since summer break started, my daughter and I have found ourselves coming here almost every week. Whether we're having a picnic under the trees, watching birds, or simply enjoying the fresh air, it's become one of our favorite summer traditions. Peterson Park is beautiful year-round, but the summer shade from these incredible trees makes it something truly special.

I like that there is plenty of seating and there is some shade. There are signs that the park will no longer offer dog bags to put waste in and I think it's nice that people have brought extra bags and tied them to the fence in case someone stops in who doesn't have bags for whatever reason. It's sad that the local government doesn't want to maintain the park, but it's great to see the community step up. The park itself looks like a former waste area with a large drainage pipe in the middle, so it's not a very aesthetically pleasing park, but it gets the job done. There is a restroom in the park connected to the dog area, but it has never been unlocked when we have stopped here and states that the local government will only open it up for special events. If your dog needs to potty or stretch its legs, this is one of the few spots in the area you can stop at and the closest one to the freeway so it gets the job done but it also leaves a lot to be desired.

Reasons for my poor rating 1. It is very close to the freeway (check on Google Maps) and a 6am on a summer weekend morning all I heard was traffic - no birds. 2. The tunnel featured on websites was blocked off. The tunnel is what made me think, 'this park is cool, I should check it out'. 3. Across the street from residental housing. (My dog is a husky mix and, if another one had shown up, they could have broken into song waking a few neighbors.) 4. Not frequented at 6am on summer weekend by other dog owners (Luckily one guy showed up with 3 dogs that played with my dog, but they only stayed 15 minutes.) 5. Parking was on street. Update 04-29-2012…read more Biking up Hutchins St past Legion Park, I noticed a Tennis Ball across the street from the Tennis Courts in the Park. Couldn't throw it back... because all the Tennis Players were gone. Took back the brand new Ball to Joe, my Dog.... Kept him busy for hours. Thank you... inept Tennis Players... Original Review 04-01-2008 Where to go to play Tennis in Lodi? And at night? My favorite place is at Legion Park on Hutchins street. There are four courts, AND there is also night lighting! In Lodi, there is also Kofu Park, about a mile West of Legion Park with 5 courts and a couple of tennis hitting walls and courtside bench seating... but Kofu attracts a "different" type of park goer. And Kofu is aimed more for larger group sports activities such as baseball and skateboarding. The second reason why I like this small park is that there is a small grove of tall trees at the West end of the park. The shade produced by those trees is sooooo inviting in the Summer! Just makes you want to set up a hammock and start taking a nap. Kofu Park, on the other hand, looks so HOT in the Summer... There is absolutely no trees... you can't put up trees near a baseball diamond or near a skateboarding course! I've always grown up equating a park with trees! Another reason why I dislike Kofu Park is the Lodi Municipal Garage situated right next to the park! There are City of Lodi vehicles that can include cop cars, city vehicles... essentially anything motorized that is owned by the City of Lodi, that passes right by the Tennis Courts. Sometimes the congestion is awful! Legion Park, also known as American Legion Park, also has a small playground for the little tykes in the family. Other sports activities is a basketball court (enclosed). There is also a picnic / barbecue area (3 picnic tables) for city park picnics or outside get-togethers. I understand that reservations are required, though. More family oriented that most other parks in Lodi, without the vagrancy prevalent in the more isolated parks in Lodi. Small enough that no member of your family would get lost, and more than enough type of activities to keep you busy. Note that night Tennis only until 11pm. Where to play Tennis if all the Tennis Courts in Lodi are filled? Get a list of apartment complexes that have lit courts... just act like you're a resident, and you've got it made!
