Wednesday, February 28 82°F 60% Humidity…read more My cousins love to eat at Baekjeong whenever they visit California. I wasn't surprised when they took us here when we were in Manila. Kang Ho Dong is a Korean ex-wrestler turned comedian. Due to a tax evasion scandal in 2011, he took a temporary hiatus from entertainment and focused on other ventures. His first U.S. restaurant Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong opened in L.A.'s KTown back in 2012. It's a very successful chain now, and today you can find locations all over like Sydney, Shanghai, and San Jose. I don't know if he's still affiliated with 678 Korean BBQ, but his name (강호동) and likeness is still used on signs and menus. This is not an AYCE kind of establishment, everything is a la carte. Prices are high, but still less expensive compared to the States. One strip of marinated short rib was ₱1350 or $23.86 USD; two strips of galbi are about $56.00 USD at their SoCal locations. The meat quality was fine, though some pieces were on the fattier side. Staff members will grill everything at the table. I did not like the rice, which was old and hard to chew. You will find 678 Korean BBQ at SM by the BAY, which is a dining area and amusement park by the water. It's a part of Mall of Asia, which is the largest mall in the Philippines and the sixth largest in the world. They have 2 dipping sauces (soy and spicey), lettuce available without extra charge, and your typical banchan. The waiters cook the food at the table for you, once they are done you need to flag them down if you need anything (additional drinks, meat, boxes, check) though the workers are just standing around.

We used to be regular customers there so we knew our meat. Our visit at this new branch redeemed us as regular customers again. We were so happy to be surprised by the extra space they have at the back; you'd think the branch is small if you only took a peek from the outside. It was a bit warm at first but they adjusted the aircon later on. Walls were painted black even in the restroom. Overall place looked simple and had that hole-in-the-wall vibe. Cleaning the front windows looks necessary though it amusingly matches the restaurant vibe. Service was good since they always got what we needed at fair waiting times. Refills came back loaded with food and the water pitcher really kept the service water cold. The free veggie leaves, dips, side dishes, steamed egg, and soup were impressive to the eyes and tongue. Be careful with the steamed egg because the bowl was insanely hot! We ordered two meats ala carte and they were excellent both in texture and flavor! To the management team: Thank you for impressing us, and we can only hope and wish you maintain the good quality of your food and service. Forget what I said about the windows; they still pass! :p

They were all attentive very warm. My sibling ordered the menu A . As they were serving the different meats and condiments , I saw a small cockroach crippling on one of the raw meat. I told the waiter and they immediately replaced the meat and apologized. It was disgusting yet for them to immediately resolved the problem was nice. Yet still unhealthy and unsafe seeing creatures crawling. I didn't eat the meat. The condiments were average. You have to ask for some dish that they don't offered. Like pickled radish, bean sprout, soup, rice is extra pay . They didn't let us pay for the rice and gave us free cofffee drink for the cockroach inconvenient. It's a nice restaurant yet attention needs to be addressed on safe handling and sanitation. Thank you .

We chose to have them grill the meat for us, and the first dish had an after taste of the gas they might have used. The second dish were the short ribs. They were very tasty, but unfortunately very chewy. I opted to eat the soups and vegetable dishes that we ordered. I enjoyed the egg pancake that we ordered. I like that they are open 24/7, but I wish their meat was more tender. I guess I am just accustomed to going to other Korean barbecue restaurants in which the meat is both tasty and tender. I liked that they had unlimited banchan (side dishes). It was nice that they gave us complimentary coffee at the end of the meal, although our birthday celebrant stated that the coffee tasted like it was from a 3-in-1 coffee packet. I thought that maybe they would have good desserts? Unfortunately, they do not have any desserts on their menu.

There was maybe a good 100 people when we arrived 5 min prior to them opening. We were placed in a nice glass enclosed VIP room for the 9 of us. And it was neat that each place setting had its own burner and hotpot so that you could individually cook your own stuff. The selections here are huge!!! They had rows and rows of food. From cooked food to uncooked food. Including seafood, beef, chicken, pork. They even had several types of noodles you can add into your hotpot from udon, to black squid ink pasta to other types. For goodness sakes they had about 4 different broth bases to use as ur liquid from fish stock, beef stock, chicken stock and regular hot water. The had an entire wall to ceiling area of just vegetables to add to your hotpot as well. Desserts they had a plethora of them from Korean style to hong Kong style to halo halo to ice creams and many other deserts. They had about 10 different non alcoholic juices and ice teas to try from which were all delicious. They also had about 5 different beers UNLIMITED beers to choose from and even a beer on tap!!!! They even had a tepenyaki type area to cook your foods as well as a sauce station with about 15 different dry seasonings and liquid sauces. Just incredible. Service tho was slow. There was a lot of people working so i dont know why it was slow. From topping off our broths to clearing our dishes. We had dishes piling up clear to the ceiling before they would be removed. Just not acceptable. Price wise to its the most expensive ive seen yet for an all you can eat in the manila area at 888 pesos. The amounts of food justifies the steep price. But i was just expecting quicker service. A good place to bring someone too if they r new to manila. For a quick second i was going to say that this place might rival the hotpot of Taiwan. But still the seafood in Taiwan is still a lot fresher and of better quality.
