The M-Path Extension officially opens sometime in February. That will mark the closure of the Dadeland Gap, the 1.2-mile section that was left out of the M-Path when it was built along with the Metrorail guideway on the former route of the Florida East Coast Railway. "The M-Path is a priceless asset for active, healthy living," said John Hopkins, executive director of Green Mobility Network, which has made M-Path improvement a key goal of its advocacy program for the past four years. History Lesson The M-Path was built 28 years ago as a service road for the Miami Metrorail, the elevated commuter railroad between Dadeland and downtown Miami's Brickell financial district. Joggers, cyclists and everyday strollers soon adopted it. Today it's a popular commuter path for cyclists in Coral Gables and points south who enjoy breezing past the rush-hour drivers on South Dixie Highway. While Miami-Dade Transit owns the M-Path, the M-Path Extension was constructed under a contract managed by the Florida Department of Transportation. The project includes new pathway at each end and north of North Kendall Drive, seven signalized crossings, and the 200-foot bridge across the mouth of the Snapper Creek Expressway. There's also an attractive stretch along the C-2 canal at the Dadeland North Station. Surveyors started driving stakes to outline the new path in January 2011. The budgeted cost was $4.5 million. Initial financing came through Florida's share of federal Transportation Enhancement funding, augmented by stimulus money after planners decided that adding a bridge to the initial plan would make for safer travel. The county's M-Path Master Plan outlines a series of safety enhancements to include lighting, signed and signalized crossings, and some path realignment. Plans for the first of those are underway.

But unfortunately, the recent lawsuit returning this park to the developer, the Allen Morris Company, is threatening this tiny park's future since the company is trying to upzone the park so they can destroy it to build a high-rise. They will shoot themselves in the foot if they do this - those living in Brickell are becoming fatigued at the total disregard for public amenities and continuing threat to quality of life by destroying nearly every public space we have. Demand will plummet and condos and apartments will start to empty if this continues. Enjoy our miniscule parks while we have them and before Brickell goes under. This Saturday, I stopped by again since it was the kickoff point for the Miami Lakes Reindeer Run 5K. Humble Brag: while not placing, I completed it on an about a 9 minute mile. It's an improvement from when I started exercising. The park has a couple of picnic shelters, a basketball court as well as body weight strength training stations. The park bathroom building was also clean. Parking is available on both sides of the street adjacent the park. For today's event, there were a couple of vendor booths, including food vendors, a podiatrist and a different gym than the one I go to. The run was through a mapped out course along Commerce Way.

The park offers two shelters that I've seen cordial celebrations held. I've even seen exercise class take place in the shelters . The park has a walking trail, benches and exercise course along the walking trail, exercise basketball court. it has a covered play area with swings and slides. Some Saturday they host Like a farmers market. On 4th of July they host free event with music and have food trucks to purchase food and drinks. The fire work show was spectacular this year.

The Venetian Causeway crosses over the man made Venetian Islands that were created by materials which came from the dredging of Biscayne Bay. Everyday area residents use the causeway for travel but also for exercise, by walking, jogging, and bicycling over it. The Venetian Causeway has one toll plaza administered by the Miami-Dade County Public Works department on Biscayne Island, the westernmost Venetian Island. The toll for an automobile is $3.00. The Causeway also has 12 bridges, 10 fixed span bridges, and 2 bascule leaf span bridges that have been designated as historic landmarks by the City of Miami and City of Miami Beach. I love the lamp posts and beautiful \view of Biscayne Bay and downtown Mami as you cross. The Venetian Causeway was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. I got to experience Morningside Park recently with my running group. With roughly 40 acres, there is a community center building for voting or town halls as well. There are about 12 parking spots near the entrance. As far as sports, you have opportunities for anything from tennis to swimming, basketball and kayaking. For my run, they have a well defined asphalt trail that took me near the waterfront for an epic sunrise view and through open dog friendly parts of the park. There are a few footbridges over a little stream with mangroves perfect for a cool gothic style pics.
