I was super excited when I walked in. Love the decor and vibes, but the drinks were shit. I ordered the pineapple sangria and there was absolutely no taste, the watermelon bubbler thing and it tasted a tad like watermelon, but gross...and a margarita something...also horrible. This is a fun little neighborhood gem. The happy hour price for the Bubblers ($5) is about what I'd want to pay. They're a little small for full price. Loved this cute little place. It ticked all my boxes for what a low key bar should be. This is probably due to the fact that they're new, but a girl can dream. I live three blocks from Kite String and I don't have enough words to convey how much my boyfriend and I love it. Let's go in order: 1) The drinks--I'm a gin drinker, my boyfriend likes to stick to beer, and we're both happy drinking here. Their hibiscus negroni is super yummy (made in a bubbler) or if you're more lowkey, they also have cheap domestics. 2) The food. Everything is so tasty and my most favorite thing is that you can order the whole food menu for $20--which is four taquitos, a generous basket of corn & beet chips + three different dipping sauces, and an alfajores from nearby Ravenswood bakery, Lucila's. Barring the alfajores, everything is made in-house and is extremely yummy. They offer a rotating vegan taquito option as well which is just as delicious. I see some other reviewers who aren't happy with the size of the food menu, but I really respect it because they do it so well. I talked with the owners when they first opened and their food mission is more to provide casual snacks rather than a dinner menu. That said, I've come here starving and left full plenty of times. 3) The atmosphere. I always describe it to my friends as having struck the perfect balance between dive bar and trendy bar. It's small and casual but with lots of thoughtful touches, it's extremely clean, and the music is always good. It's just a really pleasant place to be. I can stop by for one drink or I can hang here for several hours. 4) The owners. Andrew and Renee are some of the nicest, most accessible bar owners I've ever met. I feel like they really go above and beyond to make sure you're having a good time and you're taken care of in their establishment. This is still a really new bar, about three months old, and they're already thinking of different things to do and ways to innovate. This isn't a bar that's going to sit with the same menu and get stale and collect dust. The taquitos were alright, but for a bar that dubs itself a "taquito bar" of sorts, I was expecting taquitos that would blow my mind. I came here for a birthday party, and I will definitely return. It's particularly great for groups - the food is inexpensive and the menu is purposefully small and consistently priced, so you can order to share without worrying about ending the evening with a massive summit to divide the check. I'm a big fan! I love the environment, drinks, & taquitos. I have some friends who wish the service was better, meaning that they want servers that come to your table, but that isn't how they operate. The bartender will make you a killer drink, but you have to bring it to the table on your own. That doesn't bother me so I'm a big fan! I really hope that Kite String stays in the neighborhood. Just OK. Drinks are fine though small. Bubble drinks are not elegantly dispensed. The food is fair, our tacquitos were dry. The dips were good, though I would have liked additional options for the vehicles. Not sure what they want to be - the menu is too limited compared to all of the other options in Roscoe Village and North Center. Not sure how long they can last. Terragusto and Endgrain had really good food, but couldn't stick the landing in the same spot. Bangers and Lace was gone before you knew it was there. read more

Was highly anticipating the opening in the former B&L space. Massive letdown. Drink list is decent but food options are limited and just ok. Chips and dip are decent but just a few choices of taquitos and that's it?! Seems like they came up with a cheap concept and opened the doors a week later to help pay the rent. No waitstaff and just seems like someone's basement opened up selling taquitos to their buddies. It's a neighborhood spot with NO neighborhood feel. Should have more food options and decorate the place before opening! The neighborhood deserves better. I give it a few months after the newness subsides and it will close...the people in the hood will quickly ignore this spot. read more

The owner (who acts as bartender) was so friendly and the food was fresh and delicious! Everything but the dessert was made in-house, and even that was made just down the street. We were unfortunately unable to try the drinks, but they appeared to be varied and diverse. The menu changes with the seasons, so you'll never find the same thing twice. The entire menu was just a little over $20, and that was only because I got a soda that was produced in Wisconsin. It was enough for 2 people. First time here, and enjoyed it. Kite String is everything it says it is--no more, no less. Reasonably priced, which is refreshing in this area. I had the Negroni, which was very tasty and STRONG--fair warning. Tried most of the taquitos, and they were fresh and filling. Interesting dips for the chips. Low-key crowd. No kids allowed, which is probably good b/c it's a small space with a limited menu (I'm a parent but I can appreciate creating an adult space). I really wanted to like this spot, it's a block from my house and considering how many restaurants have been in and out of this space in the last few years, I really want something to finally stick. Unfortunately, I doubt this place will be it, it just misses the mark. When you serve such a limited menu, the food you do serve should be outstanding to keep people coming back. We went on a Wed night and sampled the entire menu (literally, this is one of the options), and everything was pretty sub-par. The taquitos were ok, but tasted a bit like the ones you get from a 7-11, that have sat on a roller for half the day. The bubbles were pretty good but if you'e like me and can only have one or two sweet drinks before moving on to beer or wine, the whole selection really just underwhelmed. All four people in our party agreed that this place would not be a destination for any of us to come back to, but if we happen to be walking by and it was open, we may stop in for a drink. The concept of place seems to be lost on me - its not a dinner or lunch designation (too small of a menu, no entrees), it could be a late night munchies hang out, but it's not open late enough for that, so what is it? I wish I was more excited about this place and I really wanted to like it, but I'm sad to say I don't. read more
