I opted to visit the nearest location to me, and when I arrived a man took me to the area where they carried different types of filters. When I mentioned I needed the specific filter I'd found on their site, he simply said "You can't expect us to carry everything our website lists!" Fair enough, I thought, but how do I get the item then? I wanted to support this little local Canadian company over the big American guys, so I asked how I'd find the item; could we see if they carried it elsewhere? "No" he said, "We don't carry it. I don't know what to tell you." I left the store. I was frustrated certainly. This system seemed terribly flawed, and with each Home Hardware branch being independently owned, there seems no central governing body to ensure this type of glib service doesn't occur. Today I went back to that same store. I didn't want to give up hope on my locally owned Home Hardware store. After all, as far as I knew it was only the one bad seed! :) When I arrived at the store, the gentleman assisting me was initially somewhat helpful. He took me through the types of paint I was looking for and helped me pick out the right one. As he was mixing the colour I selected I told him about my visit 3 days earlier. He seemed totally uninterested. He said nothing at all initially. I told him I wanted to support the store but that the central online system seemed flawed. He replied, "Nothing I say will make a difference" and grabbed my things, walking past me to the front counter. He was brisk; wanted to simply get rid of me I suppose. I asked his name, and he told me "Marty." He then said he was the owner. I nearly fell over. I asked, "Shouldn't you take more of a vested interest in this?" Perhaps I caught him on the wrong day, because he actually began yelling: "What the F do you want me to do lady? What the F are you expecting?" I nearly fell over. As he continued to scream, I stepped backwards toward the exit. I began walking away from the store, a bit shaken. Moments later Marty was chasing me down the street! Amidst neighboring retailers and shoppers, he was screaming "F-U Bitch!" again and again. He continued to chase me until I threatened to call for help, and only then did he return to his store, angry that I didn't purchase the can of paint despite his temper tantrum. (Marty should've waited until after my purchase to lose his marbles.) The really sad addition to this story is that the young gent behind the counter didn't even seem shocked. As the owner screamed, the young man simply processed the small can of paint as if nothing was happening around him. I called head office, but as I suspected, since the locations are privately owned there is no one to govern the behavior or set a standard for how each retailer operates. Marty can do whatever he wants, and I apparently have to accept being yelled at and chased down the block.

While discussing with my partner how many keys we needed. a very rude skinny man with a baseball cap on basically told me to shut up as "he" could only talk with one person at a time. I had to bite my tongue as I wanted to call him out on his rudeness. He took the keys and seemed to be having a hard time creating duplicates for us. Finally he gave us our keys, we paid and left. On getting home, four of the six keys were not cut properly and did not work in their locks. I called the store and guess who answered? Yep, this rude individual who now started interrupting me; Not letting me speak. "Just bring them back. I don't need to hear what your saying. I might not be here anyway". Needless to say I will not be returning to this store ever again.

That being said: you get what you pay for, which is why I chose Canlik. I had previously gotten a cheaper quote and an earlier project completion date from another highly-rated refacing company - but their customer service was horrific! They were rude, wore no mask when I came to visit, and had an attitiude like people visiting their showroom and asking about different finishes was an annoyance. With this type of job, service makes the difference between a stressful experience and one that isn't. Its thousands of dollars, after all! With Canlik, I immediately saw a more professional, patient and thorough approach. Victor in the showroom genuinely took the time to explain options (eg thermofoil, painted wood, laminate) and got my respect when he suggested the most affordable option as the best one for my needs instead of pushing for me to choose the expensive one. He also took the time to pour over swatches with me, understand the look I wanted, try different swatches with my granite sample and discuss all aspects, like room size and how much light is there. He provided a lot of info based on working with designers and what is on trend but also classic. The trust was there: I knew they weren't going to have project start delays or leave me with deficiencies (as many big box renovation companies do, according to the internet). Simon, who handled the installation part, was equally great. The job was done on time, exactly on budget, with polite and efficient service and a genuine desire to please their client. My cabinets are gorgeous, modern, high quality and they transformed my tiny kitchen from dark and 80's looking to dreamy design-mag. I went with a modern shaker cabinet in a pale grey (looks almost white), timeless steel handles, and I almost happy-cried when I first saw their finished job.

Great place for bamboo and everything to do with bamboo. I also love the paper lanterns there, and if I had an apartment I'd totally decorate it with a bamboo or paper lantern umbrella.. it's just gorgeous. Love. LOVE. Love. Also, the prices are uber cheap. $0.89 for a little bamboo spoon! Most places like Williams Sonoma would charge you $3 because it's an "eco-friendly sexy product". Here, bamboo it is what it is -- a cheap, renewable, green resource. I also like that they're frugal and eco-friendly. They wrap whatever you buy in newspaper rather than give you a bag. Love.
