It's nice to know that there is actually an abundance of healthy food stores and restaurants to counteract all the pub drinking and fried fish and chips. We found Kitch in Kent on our day trip to Canterbury. There is a wealth of restaurants on St. Peters Street, many of which are fast food. Kitch stood out to us. It was part cafe, part bakery, and a whole lot of country shabby chic.
This restaurant has a large crowd. We were lucky to get a table upstairs where it was a bit more quiet. We were on the tail end of lunch time. I thought the service would be a little bit faster but it was pretty slow. Maybe because they make all of their food fresh.
The menu is simple with choices of salad, sandwiches, toast, baked goods, and cafe drinks. You can opt to have your food vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, etc. I went for the garlic and rosemary chicken sandwich with a side of cauliflower and black pepper soup. For drink I got an iced Moroccan Mint Tea. The sandwich bread was so hard and dry it was like cardboard. The chicken was in large chunks and despite the homemade pesto, overall the sandwich was very tough, bland, dry, and chalky. I almost choked on the sandwich a few times and it was hard to swallow. Perhaps I should learn to chew better or cut my food into very tiny pieces. The soup was fantastic. I wish I had a large bowl of that instead of just a cup. The tea was delicious and in the end it was just nice to sit in a sunny room and relax with a bit of food.
Kitch has a lovely atmosphere that encourages its patrons to sit back and relax. There are a few games and cookbooks around and it feels like you are in an old farm house. I'd come back for a beverage or light snack but would skip the sandwiches. read more
