LOVELY! BRILLIANT! FRIENDLY!…read more Just one block off the main drag of Canterbury, on a much quieter street, is the semi secret oasis from the hordes or tourist crowds, is The Foundry. Walking right in is the louder pub bar area, to the right is a quieter spacious large industrial room with full wait service from the friendly staff. Great local craft beers! £18 FISH & CHIPS! A beautiful chunk of fresh cod in a thick crispy hot batter made with Canterbury Brewers beer...lovely! And about £2 cheaper than average! The chips were tasty and plentiful, and the homemade mushy peas were creamy. Great homemade tartare sauce!

A nice airy space with high and low tables and a long bar. Love the sustainable and local focus. Really pleasant server and barkeep as well. We ordered the bubble and squeak starter which was a new one for us Americans. I had the steak and Foundry Ale pie which was incredible. Exectly how you want this sort of thing - loaded with tender meat and veg and a huge, flaky crust. He had the hunters chicken which I heard no complaints about. We finished with the sticky toffee pudding and it was one of the best things I ate during our travels. Loved the sparkling fruit cider that I ordered: fresh and bright and bubbly. Can't recommend this place enough!

We liked this restaurant so much, we went back two days in a row during our short visit to…read moreCanterbury. The first night, I had a vegetable pie and my husband had the meatballs. His was a side dish so he was surprised at the good portion size, which included bread. He liked it very much but, since I kept raving to him about the delicious, piping hot veggie pie, he wanted to go back and try one. The second night he got the chicken and broccoli pie and I had the vegetable soup and a mixed salad. Again, everything was delicious, the hot food was nice and hot and cooked just right. In addition to the food, the restaurant has a lot of character and charm, you're eating in a historic building, and our server - Hina - was amazing. If we were staying longer we'd return again and again!

Inside the 15th or 16th century decor continues with amusing whimsical antiques and artworks. Service is friendly all around. Great savory meat pies, but maybe skip dessert and the beers... £19/$26 Lamb & Rosemary Weaver Pie...succulent tender chunks of Lamb in lovely gravy with vegetables, wrapped in warm a buttery pie crust...lovely! £19/$26 Steak & Kidney Weaver Pie...I took a risk! Tasty meaty juicy hunks of British beef...mixed in with the bitter, strong gamey, and pungent pieces of kidney...a very distinct taste indeed, not for everyone, but I found it good enough...though next time I might try something else. The chips are thick and crispy, brilliant! £8/$11 Apple Blackberry Crumble...disappointing! There didn't seem to be any chunks of fruit, just a mix of syrup and crumbles. It was very liquidity. Custard was nice though. £8/$11 Pint of Guinness...much more expensive than the average pint price.
