Kirkstone restored my faith in the industry. They did a great job. Let's compare my experiences. BEFORE KIRKSTONE, THE BAD...Company #1. I had my fireplaces serviced by another company last year. In 1 year both fireplaces weren't working again. When he did service it, the guy (friendly enough) seemed to fumble around for a long time like he didn't know what he was doing it and it came out looking just okay. THE UGLY...Company #2. I dealt with a 2nd company in the past to install a high efficiency on demand boiler. Lots of chasing and follow up needed and the dude was a very intimidating man with tattoos on his head and a bad attitude that the company excused cause he was having a divorce. I couldn't wait for him to leave and to be done with Company #2. THE GOOD... KIRKSTONE We got our 2 fireplaces serviced by Kirkstone. Our service tech was Tony. He was clean, very professional and showed up on time. Straight to work confidentially servicing our 2 fireplaces in ~1 hour. I felt safe with him in my home. Tony had great communication skills and was informative about lots of questions I had about things (like possibly installing a gas line to my bbq). I also asked him about what was needed to service our on demand boiler and he gave me a no BS answer and there was no attempt to upsell me on work that wasn't needed. That totally gained my respect. Tony's work resulted in a much nicer looking, working fireplaces than the last company. He even made some cosmetic improvements that looked great! He came, did a great job fast and left with zero BS. I dealt with scheduling and invoicing through James. Again a very positive attitude and he was totally fair and reasonable. Called out Kirkstone to check a furnace in our house where the blower didn't start/stop reliably (although it still worked when triggered manually). Tech came out and poked around for a couple of minutes before quoting $1500 for a new gas assembly because "they don't make parts for your furnace anymore, it's too old." Did some more investigating (with help from online videos) and found the issue had nothing to do with the gas assembly and it was only the blower thermal switch that was failing to actuate properly anymore. They don't make the original switch anymore, but it's a very common part that all forced air furnaces have, and alternate options are easily available. Called another company and the tech came out and found an equivalent part that's currently available. Cost me $400 including parts and labour for installation. Works perfectly now. read more

Sent someone from BC Pro to service a working furnace. Did not service the furnace but charged $200 to say we needed a new furnace. Called a different HVAC company that properly cleaned and serviced the furnace. Will not be using Kirkstone or BC Pro ever again. Total ripoff. read more

We recently had Kirkstone service our fireplace. For the last couple of years it has not been working correctly and after having several companies in to take a look at it we had excuses from "I don't know" to "you need a new fireplace, let me sell you one" We decided to take one last shot at getting it fixed. My wife came across a listing for Kirkstone heating. On their website it indicated that if they could not fix it, you would not be charged. So we thought, what do we have to lose? Our technician arrived right on schedule and quickly assessed what the problem was. A little bit of a cleaning of the igniter and changing the batteries in the receiver for the remote control unit. This last bit surprised me greatly as three other firms didn't even consider this possibility. To be honest, I didn't even know there was batteries for the receiver unit LOL. I Donely focussed on changing the batteries in the remote control itself. The problem was solved and now our fireplace works brilliantly! Our technician was very friendly and professional. Most importantly, he showed great integrity and honesty. Total bill came to less than $160. Much cheaper than buying a brand new fireplace. I highly recommend Kirkstone read more

After our carbon monoxide alarm went off Fortis came and notified us our furnace heat exchanger was cracked and needed to be repaired before being put back in use. Kirkstone Heating in North Van was the only company available for a same-day appointment. When the tech came, he told us he was 99% certain all the heat exchanger needed was a good vacuuming. After doing that, he turned the gas back on and went to measure the CO level at a register, where a small amount was still detectable, told us it was normal for an old furnace and nothing to worry about. Kirkstone Heating charged close to $400 for the vacuuming, which left soot all over the place. I found Fortis' "red tag" identifying the furnace as hazardous tossed in the trash. Needless to say, we did not feel safe with ANY amount of CO being blown into the house. The gas inspector we contacted explained that even small amounts of CO coming off at the register can quickly build up in a house during winter when windows and doors are closed, i.e no amount of CO emitted by a furnace is safe. We ended up shutting the furnace off and getting it replaced after requesting estimates from several companies, all of which told us the same thing as the gas inspector. Would give a negative or zero star rating if possible. read more

Technician was uneducated, gave us 30 seconds of their time, and seemed to be bothered by the service call. recommended gas over electric (HWH), then flopped for no reason. called the office, and they confirmed the tech should have repairs, would look into it, and would get back to me. They never got back to us to explain, or proceed with the work. *update* A rep from the company contacted me directly, and seems very keen on making things right. They recognized the communication failure and has provided quotes for the work. Upped the rating to 3 stars from 1, recognizing the efforts to correct. read more

It's been a long time since we've been so frustrated by this company making empty promises and not following up with even a courtesy call to say they will not be coming out. We decided to get another company to install the control valve and asked them to send us an invoice. Well the invoice was more than double the cost they quoted. No thank you! I found Kirkstone Heating through Yelp and contacted them with my job. It was to modify an existing bbq connection that was not the right size for the bbq we had purchased. Within a few minutes, got a response that they could do it - and they reached out and coordinated the work a few days later. They came by, and got it done in a super short time (30 minutes?). Interesting experience. I have 2 former wooden fireplaces converted into gas. The cleaning and maintenance services are not the same as the new ones. When I requested these services, I sent pictures of the fireplaces attached to the email. They replied me back pretty quick. When the maintenance person came, he wasn't very friendly and even less when he saw the fireplace. He said to clean them, it would be 3h of work each. He would have to remove every single piece of the fireplace to do it properly. It's not the simple procedure of coming and cleaning right away. He said he didn't have time for it and left. I wondered why he was surprised since I sent the pictures in the first place. Then I got a call right away from the person who took care of the schedule. He was very pleasant, apologized he missed the pictures and scheduled to send a senior person to take care of it. Then few days later the other technician came and cleaned them right away. It seems he did what the first guy said it isn't the proper way. I got confused, but he seemed to know what he was doing. Right or wrong, the fireplace works well. I will probably hire them yearly for this service. read more
