***CUSTOMER BEWARE!!*** If you happen to stop at this shop it will be the BEST decision you ever made on your trip to Estes park. I just so happened to miss my reservations for the Rocky Mountains and my wonderful girlfriend surprised me with a fly fish trip through Kirk's fly shop to try and turn the day around. In addition to me missing the reservation to the Rockies. The reservations for the fly fishing ended up being for their other location... FORTUNATELY for us we met Trish and Pete and the rest of the gang at the Estes park location and they treated us like family. Extremely helpful in calling the other location and making the reservations right. Trish was able to get us all suited up with gear and fishing licenses and ready to head out to fish within 15 minutes of us entering the shop. I wish I was making this up guys. These guys are LEGIT. Here's where it gets even better. We were blessed to have PETE as our guide for the fly fishing experience. This dude is TOP Notch. He made the experience way more enjoyable and was extremely patient with us. He genuinely enjoyed teaching us the art of fly fishing as well as watching us catch fish. It was insane watching this guy hype us up because he either thought we caught something or our bobber went under water. You can only fake that kind of excitement for so long and that's how you know it was real. Estes park is a beautiful place but make sure you stop by Kirk's fly shop. It's a spot worth just stopping and saying hi! Give these guys your business!! If you can swing the price for the guided tour DO IT!! In all reality we had a great day and this is a fishing shop. Had a hiking tour with Roberta on 5/4/25. Definitely the best hike ever. She made it very unique and memorable. Setting up the hike and asking questions was super easy. Would definitely use them again and would ask for Roberta if you want to go on a hiking tour. We hope to be able to do a fly fishing tour someday as well. As two senior women who have always loved fishing, we were a little unsure of what our experience would be taking a fly fishing lesson. Ben at Kirks Fly Fishing could not have done a better job. He is such a genuinely nice young man. We learned so much about fly fishing in a very hands on way, i.e., tying knots and viewing flys and the bugs and larva they imitate. I have never been fly fishing before and have always wanted to, so we chose Kirks due to the reviews and the fact that the is never such thing as a bad day in Estes Park. The shop is great and if needed, you can buy a fishing license. The gear is superb and they help you at every step in getting ready. Our guide Mark was excellent. We had a group of 3, with 2 of us being first timers. Everyone caught fish!! Mark was a great teacher with the best attitude. After he got everyone set up and gave basic instruction, he spent a few minutes with each person making sure they were able to cast and gave a few pointers. After that, he spent more time with each of us individually giving more detailed lessons. We all had a blast and now can't wait for our next trip. Top notch service on the phone & on the water. Was interested in half-day class & half-day fishing to introduce my son-in-law to fly fishing. After a lovely chat on the phone, we were assured all their guides could give us instruction right on the river. Oh Boy was she right! I hadn't been trout fishing in a decade & after a short streamside intro I was back at it, aiming for those seams & mending into the counterflows. John Carey could not have been a better guide; patient, informative, active, and his eagle eyes had us on the fish in no time. We were nymphing all day due to the high water flow of the Big Thompson River. We fished several places; wolfing down our excellent lunch sandwiches & homemade cookies so we could get back on the river asap. We landed over a dozen fish each; from the cute little Browns to chubby twelve inch Rainbows! We did a six hour trip & followed him in our own car to the various spots. He had us rigged us up in no time & fixed us right again when we snagged ourselves up (many times!). Best day ever! I've read (too many times but never experienced it) that if you match the hatch you can get a strike on almost every other cast. Well that's what happened for me on 5/17/22. Fairly recent to fly fishing but trout fishing all my life I've never caught so many fish in one half day (~20). We were on the Big Thompson in town near the lake and my guide Kent put us on a bead that matched what the fish were looking for. Better yet I needed instruction on improving my technique and Kent was awesome, he can move that line in a seamless pirouette while I'm a clumsy drunk in cowboy boots. He kept working with me on casting and mending; now that I have clear view of what can be achieved and its time for more practice. Great equipment and friendly helpful team in the shop. We used several guides from local shops for a week of fly fishing in Estes Park, Big Thompson, and near Cameron Pass. Tim Phillips out of Kirk's was the best by a wide margin. He knows the waters intimately, is uncommonly pleasant to hang around with, and far exceeded our expectations. My father will be contacting him for a beginner's trip with one of dad's grand-daughters and I'll insist on him for our guide when I return. I have such great things to say about the shop and our guide, Kent. I received courteous emails and phone calls ahead of booking to help me identify a good option for my crew. They helped me find a day and time best suited to our travel schedule and skill level. Check in was simple, gear was provided and easy to use, and our guide was phenomenal in every way. My husband and father had some experience, while I hadn't touched a fishing pole in over 15 years. Kent was so knowledgeable. My boyfriend, Ryan, is an experienced fisherman, but in Florida, quite different fly fishing here in Colorado. Our guide Duane was amazing! He took us bushwhacking through the park to the river. Prior, we got fitted for our gear and bought our license right there in the shop. Super easy and convenient! Duane has a life time of experience fly fishing and it showed. He taught us how to cast different ways, changed out our fly based on what the trout were hitting, made sure that our fly had dry shake on it when needed, and when we got a hook caught in a tree he would get it out. I definitely got some great lessons on fly fishing and learned a lot about the river and different trouts. We also saw an otter during our 6 hour trip. The sandwiches provide were very yummy too!
