The office is well-decorated and cozy with accent walls and aesthetically-pleasing black and white photos of people with ridiculously white teeth. They have complimentary fruit and drinks (orange juice, green tea, water, etc.), free yummy chapstick, and of course your obligatory floss and toothpaste. The exam/cleaning rooms all have nice, big windows, so you can look out the window or watch TV while you are having work done, your choice. Also, you have the option of dipping your hands in a paraffin wax bath for a nice hand treatment as you get your teeth done. Absolutely genius ... I mean, if you're sitting there for an extended period of time anyway, why not? Everyone I interacted with there was very pleasant, but, most importantly, honest. Dr. Alber has a very frank, here's-how-it-is personality, which I really appreciated. He told me I should consider having my wisdom teeth out in the near future, and when I admitted that I thought I would be doing that on my next visit to Peru, he encouraged me. "Heck, they can do it for a lot cheaper than I can -- and they have good dentists!" he said. I really appreciated that because he could have said something like "Well, the only way you can be SURE to have it done well is to go through me." I loved the no-upsale approach. My visit was very cheap; with insurance, it ended up being $22, but without it would have been $110 for cleaning, xrays, and checkup. I will definitely be going back.

Harper, DDS, MD's office at Boulder Creek Implant & Oral Surgery. My primary dentist had discovered a red area on the bottom of my left tongue and strongly encouraged me to visit an oral surgeon for a professional opinion and possible biopsy. On June 23, I had my first scheduled appointment with Dr. Harper. One of the first things he told me was that he just got back from a 5 week vacation in Europe. He looked at my tongue area for a couple of minutes and told me he thought that area was being aggravated by rubbing against some rough tooth surfaces. I was presented for a bill in the amount of $239 and informed that my Delta Dental coverage would not cover any of that "specialist visit" expense. He sent me back to my primary dentist to discuss the tooth surface theory and to return after a month for a follow up visit. Kat, the front desk receptionist, told me there would be no additional charges for the follow up visit in one month. After consultation with my primary dentist and some tooth smoothing, I returned to Dr. Harper's office on August 23 for my follow up visit. He proceeded to tell me how much he had been fishing throughout Mexico during the summer. He reviewed the tongue area again and suggested we proceed with a biopsy, "just in case." His assistant began to numb that area of my mouth. Kat then brought in an invoice while I was in the chair numbing up. There was a $55 charge for an "oral evaluation" and $224 for a "soft tissue biopsy." She slipped me a small piece of paper telling me I would be charged an additional $240+ for tissue processing and diagnosis. When I questioned the $55 charge and what she had told me previously, she said that would be the charge. She agreed to immediately discuss this with Dr. Harper. She returned shortly and told me he refused to honor the no cost follow up visit. A couple of minutes later, Dr. Harper entered the room and asked me if there was something bothering me. Getting more numb by the minute, I questioned him about the surprise $55 fee. He dug in, got defensive and refused to honor that promise. I explained I am a senior citizen on a fixed income. His reply was, "We are all on fixed incomes!" This is after telling me how he had been in Europe for 5 weeks earlier in the summer and recent multiple fishing trips to Mexico. This, from a man with the initials DDS and MD after his name. He said he did not appreciate the energy coming from me and suggested we stop the procedure. After being sedated and wanting to have the biopsy done, I decided to go ahead, even with some apprehension about how he would perform the biopsy in his defensive and defiant state. Kat scheduled an appointment to review the biopsy results the following Tuesday. She called Monday and said results were not in. A new appointment was set for Thursday morning. I showed up first thing and was told no results were available. She said Dr. Harper was scheduled to leave town for another 6 week vacation, and it might not be until October 11 before I received my test results. Dr. Harper was in the office that morning and told me he would personally call me as soon as the results came in after tracking them down that morning. 24 hours passed with no call. After follow up with Kat, Dr. Harper finally called me with a negative test result. 11 days to get a test result from a lab in Aurora! When I received the bill for the biopsy, it was $320! I have to say, Kat, his front desk assistant, tried to be very accommodating and comforting throughout my unfortunate experience. Her compassion vs. Dr. Harper's coldness, defensiveness and dismissiveness was a stark contrast. In addition, I also witnessed Dr. Harper's use of profanity and foul language. This is not the kind of professional I would care to do business with at any future date. The entire experience was very unprofessional, rude, stressful, humiliating and unfortunate. I truly hope no one else has to ever go through this with Dr. Harper.

I was no longer able to get to my…read morelong term dentist as it is a difficult location for me to now access and he will be retiring soon. I tried one that was close by that I could access on my own by bus, but after having a great first visit with the younger dentist there, I returned to discover that he had left when the practice was sold. I had really wanted a multi dentist practice so that if needed on short notice there would be someone available. My long time dentist was a solo practitioner and did not work full time. Through all of this, I had a recommendation for North Boulder Dental which only missed in the self transportation factor and in taking my insurance. After talking to them on the phone, I was assured that they would process my insurance claim but I would pay at point of service and the reimbursement from the insurance would come directly to me. It was close enough to my home that I was sure I could get a ride as the bus I normally use does not go that way. It was a wonderful decision. I don't think in my whole life I had ever had such a wonderful experience in a dental office. I chose a dentist that a friend recommended from their team of 4-6 dentists on staff. They are open 5 days a week which none of the previous offices I had used, did. They had been 4 or under. I was able to get a date and time that worked easily for me. They had me pre-register on their website so that they could save time on arrival, know my dental and medical history and gather my previous dental records from the previous practice. They sent gentle reminders for arrival. When I arrived, I found a clean, attractive and comfortable waiting area, better than any previous situation. Staff greeted me immediately. I was taken on time. I met the dentist, Dr. Nielsen and her assistant, we chatted a little to get familiar with expectations and they went right to work on an initial exam. Most of my teeth were fine, just a few gum issues to address. No cavities, no infections. As I have a serious chronic disease, these are critical assessments. I then proceeded to the hygienist who performed the most thorough but gentle cleaning in my life. This is important as I bleed easily because of my medical condition. Before leaving, I made my appointment for my next cleaning in 6 months. I paid and left, confident it was the right choice.

Dr. Higgins was recommended to me by a friend with the lowest pain tolerance I know. The office for starters is beautiful. They have Planet Earth playing in the waiting room and more books than brochures trying to sell you procedures. The receptionist is always super, super nice. She is chatty if you want to chat or quiet if you want to wallow in self-pity about having your teeth done. Even when I call too early in the morning she is friendly and helpful. A+ The hygienists are great. Friendly and helpful and as pain-free as possible. I hate having cavities searched for by pick. Here they use micoscopes! No unnecessary poking or prodding. The best part is Dr. Higgins though. My first cavity I was a nervous wreck. I was expecting the whole shebang of painful scrapy metal thing, big rubber thing, other big rubber mouth rest, needles, drills, pain, misery. He gave me a demo of his laser tool on his finger. It's that gentle! Makes a loud noise, but otherwise just sprays warm water. It's so cool! He told me "open your mouth, try to hold still." Then zapped it a few times, filled it, and I was out the door in less than 20 minutes. Didn't hurt, no shots, and the worst "pain" I had was water hitting my mouth. You can really tell Dr. Higgins loves what he does. He is not like most dentists who push procedures on you, he has talked me out of procedures numerous times that he thinks are unnecessary. He is passionate about his art and constantly searching for the next cool gadget to make dentistry less uncomfortable and less invasive. If all dentists were like him, no one would be scared of it anymore.
