Luckily the heat of the summer is previewing in late May already there is a spot of shade and some boulders to sit on. Not safe for white shorts. If you have toddlers or young elementary children they can run around in the grassy area. We only went as far as the boulders and didn't see any restroom facilities. Good idea to bring your own water to quench your thirst.

Towards the top, our PE teachers surprised us with water balloons. That has got to be one of the most memorable moments I had at MMS. Heck, I remember walking from MMS to town center on Fridays and on the last day of school! Oh the good ol' days! It's a beautiful path, well maintained for the most part. It's quite long path to walk, jog, stroll, or bike through. Nevertheless, it is in no way strenuous or intense. Perfect for little ones too. People walk their dogs just bring poop bags and remember to toss it in the trash can. Didn't notice any sketchy people around but I still wouldn't go alone. It's a nice neighborhood and the path isn't hard to find when going down or up.

We came up Kunia Road and entered Schofield Barracks. You tell them you wanna hike Kole Kole trail. Then you pull over and get a permit. Your car must be fully legal and bring ID for everyone. They take your photo. Then we drove back into the base a while to the trail head. Nice parking and safe from thieves and vandals. The first 0.4 miles is extremely easy, like easier and shorter than Diamond Head. You get to a bench viewing area that is absolutely gorgeous. Unique views of West side. If you continue on to the left of the bench is a trail partially obscured by tall scratchy California grass. The trail is still easy for awhile, we took the left fork which is more gradual. Then you start ascending the side cliff which gets progressively more challenging, loose gravel, rock climbing but there are ropes to help you. Glad I brought spikes for the way down. Should have brought my gloves and worn long pants as I got lots of scratches on my legs from plants. We went to the top a little past where the junction is. You can see North Shore, West side, and all the way to Diamond Head. Approximately 2.5 miles total. Not too dangerous and mostly shaded until the ridge part. Sae many other side trails would love to explore.

The thing about Kolekole trail is that if it had been raining, it dries up pretty quick. It's like the trail just absorbs all the rain. The hike up was fairly easy and clear however very gusty. We made our way up the summit only to feel the gusts even more. And that then was the end of the trail for us. Always practice safety first. There is always another day. The views were spectacular so it wasn't a total loss.

Enjoyed this hike that is located off the Mānana Ridge Trail…read more First of all wear proper shoes for this hike. The surfaces can be muddy, slick, rocky and rooted. Bring plenty of water and snacks. It's all steep downhill or uphill once you take the falls section of the trail. The falls were not running much at the time of my hike , however the pools were cool and deep. The area is lush and beautiful with some tropical plants in bloom. There is a rope that is knotted to hold onto to help you walk down the rock face down to the first pool and rope swings into the next pool below it. The journey back up got your blood pumping. Parking on the street, be respectful on not talk loud in the neighborhood.

Its a straight path for about a mile then for the last mile and a half its a sharp descent to the bottom. This trail is the Manana trail but when you hit the one mile mark, it splits between the waterfall trail and the continuation of the Manana trail. Thankfully there was secure ropes to help you down and up. It wasnt bad going up because its mostly shaded. The waterfall swim was worth it, however, the waterfalls themselves werent as great. It was just a tiny stream. It also wasnt packed at around 2 pm, but when we left at around 3, the crowd started to fill quick. Overall, i recommend this hike but do be careful and follow the ropes.

But, the second time, the falls were gushing and had perfect clear water to jump into. I would say the hike to mildly challenging. There are spots that require concentration and focus so you don't fall. If it's muddy, it is way more challenging too. It can be confusing in some spots because it goes off two different ways but if you ask someone, you can figure it out easily. Along the trial, there are many beautiful views and spots for photos. And of course the falls are gorgeous. Highly recommend

This is a ridge trail which includes drop offs on both sides although the trail is fairly wide as ridge trails go. The trail climbs up the ridge going down then up starting through forest and then onto a more exposed trails. The trail was slick in places so we wore crampons especially for downhills. Going up the trail you will see Mānana Trail sign to left and waterfall to right. Parking is in a residential area, so keep your voice down. Make sure to bring plenty of water, hats, sunscreen especially on a sunny day. I wore long tights, the ferns are scratchy. Started early to keep from being in sun at the heat of the day.

There is also a boat launch. - There are a few picnic tables around to sit and eat. - There are fish in the water. We saw them. - Fishing license and park entry permit is only $6 for military and residents, for a whole year. Go here to get one: https://freshwater.ehawaii.gov/freshwater/ The Not So Good: - Dirty water, land, trails. People have made the park filthy. - Fishing is not so great. Out of the 12 people with lines in the water, NO ONE caught anything. We were trying all kinds of lures, spinners, bait, etc., during multiple times of the day. Nothing. We met a few other people who had fished there a lot more than we had, and none of them had ever caught anything. Not so great for kids who want to catch something when they fish. - Park opens at 7am. If you want to fish before sunrise, you better find another part of the lake. Bottom Line: I don't think I'll go here again unless I go with a guide, someone who knows the lake VERY well. Since everything is catch and release at this lake, the fun is in the catching, and everyone we ran into that day have never caught anything!
