I had the honor of hosting a family meal here and I'm happy to write that everything went great! The place is well decorated, spacious and spotless. We were lucky to have Devoney as our waitress. She was knowledgeable, friendly, patient and fun! She didn't rush us and let us proceed at our own pace. We ordered two types of yakitori, gyoza and takoyaki for appetizers to share. They were generous portions with perfect presentation and fine tastes. Everyone ordered their own main ramen and sushi. All reports were positive. The sushi for two people came on one well presented plate which was fun for sharing. Everything was delicious. Came on a random Tuesday at around 4pm so it wasn't busy at all inside which was nice. Service was very fast and we got our food super quickly which was a pleasant surprise. We ordered the spicy ramen and tonkotsu ramen, as well as spicy chicken wings and pork buns for appetizers. Everything was decently good! The chicken wings were crispy and juicy, but not very spicy (more sweet & spicy), the pork buns were nice and hot but had too much of mayo and sauce that overpowered the pork. For the ramen, the tonkotsu broth had a much richer broth, whilst the spicy chicken broth didn't have much flavor or spice at all. I checked out Kinya Ramen with a friend after seeing a theater performance next door on a Sunday night. As it was my first time there, I found the menu eclectic and interesting. The Ramen combo was the best bang for the buck so I got the namesake Kinya ramen plus the takoyaki (octopus ball). The Kinya ramen contains pork broth with black garlic oil flavor, topped with fish cake, chopped scallions, ginger, bean sprouts, bamboo shoots, a seasoned boiled egg, and 24k gold leaf. All in a bowl with golden noodles and either chicken or pork chashu. Such an explosion of flavor and textures: salty, sweet, crunchy, chewy, tender, flaky, and smooth. The takoyaki was an umami experience of its own. The service was on point and with such reasonable prices for their combos, I know I will be making a return trip soon to Kinya Ramen. read more

Hands down my favorite roll is the Godzilla which is unusual since I don't usually like fried rolls. It is a mouthful, but the batter is nice and thin. Takoyaki (octopus balls) were good but undercooked inside both ties I've had them. Rainbow roll was okay, it's a simple roll and mostly relies on the fish itself for flavor. Not great, not bad. Writing this review, weeks after my first visit, I actually forgot we had the ramen until I saw the photo, I guess I could say it was forgettable. I was so excited to try this restaurant once I learned it had recently opened, plus I always trust James J's reviews and glad to see a sterling one from him for Kinya. The atmosphere is, the moment you've walked through the door, incredible: blond woodwork and other warm but light colors, anime and manga references everywhere including the entire north wall of the restaurant wallpapered with manga-inspired posters, just a very fun but clean and inviting interior through and through. The menu is pretty good and does what it "says on the tin" in the sense it offers enough selection for the food the restaurant promises to purvey. No real surprises here except a great selection of various ramen options and for dessert, taiyaki, which you don't see every day in the US. I ordered just sushi has I'd been diving (platform and springboard, not SCUBA) for a few hours and that sounded good. Ramen doesn't sound so good after flipping my body into the air repeatedly. The sushi--Mexican rolls, Philly roll, cucumber and avocado roll, and yellowtail nigiri--was ok, but not exceptional. The Mexican roll was by far the best in taste, but the Philly roll was a bit flavorless. The nigiri was fresh, but lacked the flavor of really good yellowtail all the same. You could get sushi this good on a decent day over at Bento and I expected a cut above that, honestly. Arashi Yama is not far away, mind you, and has arguably the best sushi in town right now. That's the competition. Service . . . ehhh. They just opened so I am not deducting a star here but still, rather disappointing service. First, the service just seemed disorganized in general. But again, they just have opened so ok. However, I asked for some ponzu with my sushi and the food-runner did not know what ponzu was and also said "oh we don't have that". I called over my actual waitress and asked her and she did bring me ponzu . . . but in a plastic cup like you'd get for ketchup at a burger joint to-go. It did not match the otherwise pretty ceramic dishes. Why not just pour it into a ceramic dish like soya? They also forgot to bring one piece of my my two-piece nigiri out with the rest of my sushi. This all needs improvement, especially the staff not knowing simple things like what ponzu even is, I mean, come on. So a generous four stars for now . . . I'll return and see if they have gotten the service together better and also try some ramen since that's supposedly the main event here. The interior is quite cute with Japanese themed posters on the walls and it even had Kinya branded anime posters which I thought was quite neat; however the lighting was giving 'dining hall'. We ordered the miso ramen and one of the rolls. Actually we got the ramen deal which lets u get an appetizer for an extra like $4 which is pretty good cos some of the apps are like $10. We ended up getting the okonomiyaki. The miso ramen did NOT taste like miso and was actually rather bland in flavor. I did like that the pork charsiu wasn't chewy/fatty and was actually quite tender, firm and came off in delectable little flakes. The ramen noodles itself was okay, not bland but also not as springy as I would've liked. The okonomiyaki was pretty good tbh. Sidenote: it DOES contain little shrimps or something so unlike okonomiyaki offered at some other places, it does have seafood in it. As for the roll, I forgot which one I got but it had avocado, mango and kani inside with tobiko outside. It was not bad tbh, savory and also tangy sweet from the mango. It had plenty of flavor by itself without needing spicy mayo, eel sauce etc although I do still enjoy adding some extra sauce. It's a shame. We really wanted to like this place because Gainesville lacks a good ramen spot. The ramen itself was a solid 5/10, but the rest of the food was awful. We ordered yakitori, takoyaki, and okonomiyaki and were disappointed by all. The okonomiyaki seemed undercooked - it was doughy and gritty and not hot at all. The takoyaki, as we were told, is frozen and "bought from a local store like Walmart." Not fresh or made in-house. The steak yakitori was so raw it was on the verge of being alive. My boyfriend, who would eat any piece of meat put in front of him, could not even chew this. I had to censor it here because it literally looks like gore. This was our first time coming here and we are so glad we found it this is definitely now our new favorite ramen place. It's a beautiful restaurants with really cool graphics like Dragon Ball Z. Pretty extensive menu nice if you don't want to eat ramen you can do sushi. We started out with the Kani Salad and it was delicious with the perfect amount of spice. Tried the Spicy ramen with pork it was flavorful and not overly spicy. The pork was slightly overcooked but still good. My only issue was there is no kids menu and so if you want to bring your little ones just keep that in mind that options are limited. The kids tried the grilled chicken on a stick and really enjoyed it and side of white rice. Tonight I got the edamame appetizer, the Naruto roll and the Yama roll. For $5 the edamame wasn't bad but it seemed a bit undercooked and was not as hot as usual. They are not overly salty when I get them if this is a typical concern. The Naruto roll, multiple fish in cucumber instead of seaweed and rice, was beautiful and the fish was glistening. I've had Naruto that has fallen apart when picking it up because the cucumber isn't cut properly. Nothing fell apart on this one. The technique was perfect. Kudos to the sushi chef! The Yama roll is a new one for me. I don't typically choose salmon over tuna. The yellowtail on top was very tender. It mentioned it had ponzu sauce but I tasted something smoky rather than citrusy and the salmon wasn't spicy. It wasn't bad but was not quite what the description said. Do you want a really good Raman? Well this is definitely a place for you. When me and my family went there want wanted to try this place manly for the Raman but we ended up getting other things and we were very pleased with our choices. First we got appetizers. The potstickers which came with a sauce that was a teriyaki/honey sauce. It definitely made the potstickers on point. Then we got the pork buns, they were delicious to me, my family said otherwise so it's definitely something you need to try for yourself to see if you like it. Kinya Ramen is a Japanese ramen franchise from New York and New Jersey. This franchise has been expanding to other states and they recently opened one in Gainesville, Florida. I tried their Tonkotsu(Fukuoka style pork broth ramen) and i think we finally have a decent ramen place in Gainesville. Of course this place still won't be like Ippudo or ichiran in NYC or not even Ramen Takagi in Orlando but this place is still much better than previous places like Crane or Electric. I went to lunch yesterday at Kinya, a Japanese ramen restaurant. They opened only a few days ago. They have ramen, sushi, yakitori, along with items typically found at Japanese restaurants of this type. My visit was short and mostly exploratory. I will be returning for a more leisurely and in-depth experience. They are new to the area, and are located in the former location of Beef O'Brady's at the shopping center where Publix is located at NW 23rd Avenue and NW 43rd Street. It is a full service, sit down restaurant, that also offers take out. Everything is made fresh and they inform you when ordering that it can be 20 minutes or more for your food to arrive. Mine took about 20 minutes and I was there around 1:30pm. I'd imagine that when it's popping around lunch and dinner time, it can take longer to get your food. This place is not fast food, so plan accordingly and enjoy the experience. The service was timely, excellent, and attentive. Not really more need be said. It was as one would expect in a well run Japanese restaurant. I did not have sushi and will do that on another visit. Today, I had the shrimp tempura ramen. The shrimp are served on the side. I also tried the gyoza and wings appetizers. The gyoza was pork filling (aka the Japanese name for potstickers/dumplings), but you can also get veggie. The wings are offered in soy garlic or spicy sauce. I had the spicy. Both appetizers were excellent and on point. The spicy wings had some heat, but I'm a spice head, so to me they were not overly spicy. For some, they may be too spicy. Note that the $22 combo deal to choose any appetizer listed and any bowl of ramen is a good value. While I don't consider myself a ramen expert, I do know and appreciate good food. I have eaten my share of ramen around town, and to me, this is one of the better, if not the best in town. I've never eaten at an artisanal ramen place, so I don't have the high-end taste to compare this with, but for an inviting, sit down, Japanese ramen restaurant, this was an excellent experience and I will be returning. Note: I had taken a bite out of the nori in the bowl of ramen before I took the photo.
