The Dalhousie station Kinjo is one of our go-to restaurants not only only because it's close to our home, but because we've never had a bad meal in all the years we've patronized this location since it first opened. Sushi, sashimi, ramen, and even the recently added takeout fried chicken and bubble teas are good value for money. You have a FRUIT FLY problem! We just came from lunch here. Usually our "go to" place for a quick bite, we have been turned off by the fruit flies. This is the second time we have been here in 2 weeks and they have a fruit fly issue. Last time, only one fly flying around. This time we had 4 or 5 bombarding our table, landing on our lobster roll and just generally bothering us. The supervisor said he would "do a deep clean" after we left. We expected he would at least offer a discount after the flies kept landing on our food. But he said he wasn't authorized and "no manager was around". I have to be up front, you can QUICKLY get the bill up to triple figures if you are not careful. Just before COVID they eliminated the taster plate of Sushi while you were looking at the menu. (They had a nice explanation of why.) Lots of staff, requests or problems are quickly taken care of. Food comes to you at a face pace, even when it's busy. Warning, it can get loud if it's a birthday! So you will either be having fun or hiding your head as the staff sing "Happy Birthday" to someone at the next table (or you!). The "grab and go" takeout bento boxes, sushi and sashimi boxes are new, and serve as an inexpensive quick bit or meal that blows away and supermarket sushi. This is my favourite Kinjo location of them all and there are 4 of them. This is not the first one I went to as the first one I went to was the MacLeod Trail location, however, that one became too popular and too small. This location as it is bigger is able to hold more events and accommodate groups. They do a very unique and interesting event with Blue Fin Tuna which taste delicious. Favorite thing is the dynamite cone made with soy cone wrappers and VOLCANO ROLL! I also love the Pocky room! Having complimentary pocky's at the end of every visit is very nice! read more

I like this location in addition to Kinjo's original Macleod Trail location. The restaurant is huge and very nicely decorated. The staff are very attentive, friendly and efficient. In the past , I have had the deluxe sashimi platter, deluxe shrimp salad, tuna sashimi, miso soup, assorted sushi rolls, house salad and seaweed salad. I have never been disappointed. I would give this restaurant 5 stars but there are no revolving boats and no Kinjo haha. Boy - what a let down as I got a reco about this place from a someone who is of Japanese descent from Japan and works in Calgary. Waiting for a business associate in their lobby area, I thought at first that this place would be a great dining experience as some of the posted reviews were in Japanese from a Japanese magazine publication. Unfortunately, this place can best be described as comparable to the type of standard sushi one would find in a grab and go area of the deli section of a major supermarket that offers take out sushi. Rolls of 4 pieces are small and being from the states did not quite understand why Kinjo does not offer more pieces (standard rolls - I'm talking about) while adding some more fish to each piece. Both my dining partner and I felt that the only roll that was worthy of a hand clap was their dragon roll. Our server was great as was the manager who was overseeing the rate of how we wanted our dishes to come out. I thought that the greeter (MC) who came to everyone's table and introduced himself was a little over the top but hey - if one ever watches those crazy Japanese game shows that are on TV - it makes sense. You know we ate here again last night because my daughter seems to like them. Honestly I think what she likes the most is the pokey sticks which they no longer give out. We are checking kind of understand. I have to say though that their food really is just OK. We had the red Ramen last night, and it was quite good this time, but frequently it can be bland which is why I will only ever order a mini. The good news is the fish is generally quite fresh, which is quite important obviously. But I have to save Whoever makes their rice is not doing them any favours. We ordered a couple of the specialty rolls including the Jay mark and. Dragon. They taste OK but The amount of fish they are using in the rolls is definitely getting skimpier. GMAC last night had less than the width of my finger of fish down the centre of the roll. Lots of gummy rice, little fish. Unfortunately living in the deep south there's not a lot of sushi places open for dine in So we end up coming here or the mahogany location. Gather issue that we had yesterday was we were seated at a 2 person table that was still sticky and was definitely not busy. So they're cleaning protocols I wonder about. Service was fast, which is usually great however they literally couldn't fit everything on the table and ended up having to stack plates on top of eCh other. There was literally no one else in our section so I have no idea why they didn't put us at a bigger table. To top it off they were a waitress came and asked us to pay her bill halfway through because her shift was over. I think yesterday was just the last straw. The plates were very dirty looking... but the server was trying to convince us they are perfectly clean... time for some new plates... The rice is not authentic Japanese rice, it's a low grade sticky rice, so you'll notice it's grainy and hard to chew. A note on the wasabi... it's not real wasabi. You can only get real wasabi at more expensive places. Less expensive places uses this mixture of very little wasabi mixed with floor. If you're allergic to gluten... watch out for fake wasabi. This is the second Kinjo location I have been to, save to say I won't be coming back. read more

We've been coming here for more than a decade, but I think the love affair is over. Usually the service is great or at least efficient, but lately we've had missing items, or food that should be served at the beginning of meal arrives at the end (Miso Soup, Goma Ae). Today we were going to share the Grilled Shrimp, which can be wonderful or just meh. My sister took the first piece and said it was overcooked and we should have sent it back right then, but I decided to try it. Just as I was lifting it up, my husband noticed a hair on the shrimp. We called the waitress over and pointed it out and she was very apologetic and took the plate away. We didn't rant and rave or demand anything, we just assumed it would be replaced, end of story. I could see two waitresses examining the plate closely, and next thing the chef was called over and he looked closely at the plate and over at us. Then the waitress brought the plate back over to me and said that nobody who works there has that colour of hair! She did ask if we still wanted it replaced or taken off the bill and we opted for the latter. She was very pleasant about it, but it still rankled. It could have come from me, but then again hair can waft around and it can end up in the food - it's just a thing that happens sometimes no matter how careful you are. But how you handle it makes the difference. The proper response is to just suck it up and replace it. You can bitch about it behind our back - or right in front of us since we don't speak Japanese, but this felt like they were accusing us of something. Maybe if the staff wasn't always changing they would have realized we come here a fair bit, but you never see the same faces. Time to find a new sushi place. Maybe Kinjo's is getting too big with so many locations around the city. There are lots of other places to go. Or we'll just limit ourselves to the Sushi Train in Banff. See ya, Peter. read more

Simply just a bad experience. I am Celiac so I am used to having to jump through some hoops when it comes to ordering out. I called Kinjo in Calgary Millrise to ensure what I wanted to order could be made gluten free. After getting the ok, I placed an order on Skip and awaited my order. After a period of time I received a call from the restaurant letting me know that they if fact couldn't make my order gluten free and were unable to make any sort of substitutions. I wasn't asking for anything extra, or anything that cost more money ....... Unhelpful and a waste of my time. The service at this location is less than desirable. Manna from the heavens! Millrise was in need of a pick-me-up in terms of its dining - enter Peter Kinjo. The man who opened the original Kinjo on Macleod Tr in 2005 and expanded to Dalhousie in 2011 has struck again, opening his third location in the city, and it is a most welcome new restaurant. The original location is notorious for its limited 65-person seating, hyperspeed turnover, and raucous atmosphere - Millrise follows closer to the Dalhousie model in its sprawling interior, but retains the fast food service and upbeat atmosphere. The interior design is warm and inviting, with three distinct themes throughout (my wife lamented that the kitchen area itself resembled a cafeteria). Their general organization in the entire restaurant would not have you believe this place was only opened to the public five days beforehand - smooth and efficient. And of course you have popular "Pocky boy" Andre spreading cheers through the dining room, singing four birthday songs in the 45 minutes we were there. Of course, interior design and atmosphere will only get you so far in the restaurant business, so the element that Kinjo has maintained to the highest standards in all three locations is the most important: the food. My wife and I ordered the kissing dragons roll, some assorted pieces, gyoza and the sauteed long beans. It was the Sunday dinner rush (likely close to 70 people in the whole restaurant), and we received all of our food within 10 minutes of ordering it. The sushi was as fresh and delicious as it always is in a Kinjo location - I don't want to claim its the best in the city, but... The best part of this place is its proximity to home, literally a stone's throw away. On second thought, that may be the worst part. Very excited to come back here again and again. read more

Wonderful place to bring the kids. Affordable and delicious. My daughters been a vegetarian for just over a year now (and picky eater) and she's easily satisfied along with the boys ages 4-13. The manager is an amazing guy and really makes his customers old and new feel welcome. The great touches of samples, orange monkey for the kids, kids chopsticks etc make a world of difference for the overall experience. They are always fast too. Do note they are often Quite busy and it can get loud but lots of things to enjoy to make up for that. Highly recommend this location. read more

The food is what you've come to love and expect from Kinjo, fresh fish due to their high turnover, and friendly staff. The 3rd Kinjo is now located in Millrise. I like coming here because of Kinjo's consistency. You always know what you're going to get when you come here. The staff are always welcoming, the service is prompt, the food comes out fast, there are a lot of choices on the menu and I appreciate that they give out free sushi/tempura. On top of that, the food always tastes good. Peter Kinjo (the owner) has everything in place for a successful business model. If I could change one thing though, is that they should also give out free Pocky to the guys too.. C'mon there's mountains of Pocky in that giant room! read more

This is my regular sushi place, and this location in particular. Certainly not the best sushi in Calgary, but it is consistent and quite inexpensive. Our bill is always around $40 for two people. Choices typically include potato cakes, vegetable tempura, smoked salmon sushi, cajun prawn sushi, volcano roll, and some sort of large roll.
