They saved my bacon by actually having a copy of the book .You almost feel like you are stepping back in time when you go in .The staff ( mainly retired folk when I went) were lovely, happy to chat and have a laugh. You won't get the choice you can expect from nearby Amersham as there are few books here but nevertheless it is a community resource which should not be allowed to disappear.I should imagine it is also a great social meeting point for the village.

I only live around the corner from this Camden library branch, which is Holly Lodge. And even up to this day, I will always use the services at Highgate Library, for hiring out DVDs, PC printing and the photo copy machine. And I even reserve books and DVD from Highgate Library. Highgate Library is literally right next door to Highgate Cemetery, the place of Karl Marx's tomb.

The children's section is well-kept, with plenty of fun seating for the little ones to have a relaxing read in. Story time and rhyme time are useful additions that the children enjoy. The staff are quite helpful, and are happy to give you tips on good books for different age groups. Of course becoming a member and borrowing books are completely free. It is never too early to start too, children can be members soon after birth if you wish! It's a good place to take the kids out especially in the colder months when you can't do much outdoors.

The first one is that it's got a far more pleasant atmosphere, and it doesn't get nearly as hot in here as the main Harrow branch! Everything is on one floor, with a decent children's area. The reservations are now handled by automated touch screens, although there are still staff nearby if you need them. Of particular note is the excellent biography section, and the well stocked cookery shelves as well. I've found them to ha e some surprisingly new and high end cookbooks in there.

We enjoyed roaming the floors during an unexpected rain shower, and enjoyed all the historical tomes exhibited here. We did not sign up for cards, and therefor did not get to explore the rooms or stacks, but we did enjoy our walk around. During college (as a history major), it was frequently joked that you haven't really researched in a library if you haven't wound up making out in the stacks... well, after a day of research, I enjoyed some fun pictures and 'making out' with my husband, making this a thoroughly educational stop in our London adventure.

You can also borrow VCRs and DVD for a small fee. There's always an interesting display of books when you enter themed around some topical subject of that week and also a 'recommended' section featuring the staff's favourite books. Upstairs there's a full IT suite where you can surf the internet etc. An excellent library staffed by friendly, helpful people. You can also access all the libraries services online which makes checking the catalogue, reserving books and renewing those you've borrowed very easy.
