I am not a…read moremember of this library but they have a good selection of books, movies, and CDs that I was impressed by...it made me want to join the library membership program. There were very large tables on the second floor that had plenty of space to spread out your stuff. The room was fairly quiet and there was a variety of open seats and tables. The room got a good deal of light and the courtyard outside is very beautiful. I would definitely recommend checking out this place.

The staff are friendly, too, which is why I felt generous enough to award two stars rather than just one I haven't actually spent a night here myself, but I had a good look around when a friend came to London recently. I am always curious to check out affordable hotels in the area as people always expect some hot tips from locals. Well, this isn't one of them. It looks nice enough from the outside, but you just know what to expect the moment you open the door. There are no smoking signs and the other ubiquitous health and safety warnings everywhere, but you can still smell the stale smoke from years ago. Time's stood still, but in a bad way. The room was not the smallest I have ever seen, but not exactly generous either, the shower room tiny. You have to be quite acrobatic in order to close the bathroom door for some privacy and then the door handle comes off in your hand! The view onto a nice garden square was spoilt by dirty windows, the spare pillows didn't have any covers, and I wouldn't have walked about barefoot. The sad faded picture on the wall sums the place up well. I met a rather tired friend the next day (like many old London buildings, the hotel is not soundproof and you can hear other guests returning from a night out through the flimsy doors). Her only comment about breakfast was that it was advertised as being served in a wooden floored dining room Unlike most hotels of this price range, there are no tea making facilities in the rooms themselves.

And while you're queuing to pay, there are more temptations on your way to the till - for book junkies this is worse than the sweet counters in supermarkets! Daunt Books is a small chain of independent booksellers with an emphasis on travel and literature. I like the way they curate their shops and always succeed to find a gift here - but not without buying one or two books to keep myself.

It then works on a basis where you find a book using the computer database, order it and then 20 minutes later it will be brought to you by a librarian. You cannot take books out of the library but you can ask to use the same books again the following day. I originally went to the National Art Library in search of books on contemporary textile designers, I had little luck with this. However, for history of art purposes I have found the library immensely helpful. The library is usually very quiet and has a limited capacity making it an easy and pleasant to work in.

Here comes bias-city…read more Imperial College is a fantastic place to study, the faculty here are top notch, and the number of societies and amount of activities you can get involved with endless. For a university dedicated to science, technology and medicine, students here are surprisingly gifted in the arts (we've got several orchestras and choirs, as well as the main college orchestra which won the competition for the best University Orchestra in 2008) and sports. Located in South Kensington but with campuses around Hammersmith, Paddington, Chelsea and White City there's loads of things to do, and easy access to the rest of London for nights out. And the campuses themselves look great. Our union has vastly improved, and is cheap (of course) which makes up for the house prices in London. And you get to graduate in the Royal Albert Hall. Bonus. But then, like others here, I would say that!

This is my local library, located slightly off Earl's Court Road on the Old Brompton Road…read more The 70s-built building won't win any prizes for architecture, but the inside is surprisingly light and airy. There's the usual lending and reference sections, and they have a video, DVD and music CD collection, as well as a special children's section and a small internet access section (for members only). Fees apply for videos, DVDs and CDs. Only members can take out books, but anyone can use the reference section. Being relatively small, the stock is a bit limited (especially the local history section) but is adequate for most people. My main use has been to borrow travel guides, of which there's a decent selection. It receives all the major daily newspapers, mostly read by a group of loyal pensioners who seem to go there every day. The library runs reading courses, has a reading group and once a week there's a toddlers' group called 'Baby Rhyme Time'. (I have no idea what goes on there!) The staff seem very pleasant, and there is a meeting room upstairs available for hire by community groups, seating up to 40 people. It's on the C1 bus route, and a few minutes' walk from the 328, 74 and C3 buses. Both Earl's Court and West Brompton stations are about ten minutes' walk away.

We were strolling along Church Street looking for antique door bell / door chimes - long tubular ones, but for the love of Gordon Ramsey's prix fixe lunch, I had a ticking time bomb in the back of my pants. This area, which is not far from the nice Regent's Park and the London Business School, seemed a bit dodgy. Wedged between stores selling grocery, sundries and other foodstuff on a street that is known for antiques, I was surprised to find a public library here. To my further surprise, their bathroom downstairs was super clean. After I destroyed the bathroom, we walked around the small, yet sufficient, library. After all, I'm not a hit-and-run type of girl. The guy checking out books was friendly and there seems to be a good variety of media (books, CD/DVDs, internet) with enough interesting topics to keep me reading for months. There are separate floors for adults, young adults and young children so everyone can enjoy the library within their age group. I hope the locals keep this library alive.

Extremely disappointed with the leniency in this library. I have complained several times about the…read morenoise people make, but to no avail. You've got one person snoring in the distance, another arguing (virtually screaming) at his wife in the middle of the library, and a person who thinks its okay to have a loud 20 minute phone call. I have yet to see a staff member ask them to keep it down. You need to put a strict policy in your library, and kick anybody who isn't cooperating out of the library. It is tedious having to travel to Paddington library when Church Street Library is a minute walk from home, in order to get exactly what I should be getting from ANY library: SILENCE.
