I will say parking is limited, especially when they start to get busy since there aren't a lot of spots available in front of the store. My hoohah experiences are from Las Vegas and Orange County, where the music is loud, dark rooms/neon lights, customers are dolled up, and people are laughing/drinking/eating. Not this place. It's quiet, brightly lit, and no drunken shenanigans. They serve soft drinks and hot tea. It's definitely a much welcomed break for my old butt. Friendly staff and simple setup. Literally a couple chairs and stools sprinkled around the shop and people just huddle around a hookah and have quiet conversations. I've been to a few hookah bars in my day, but it's been YEARS since my last visit to one. I'm not sure exactly how it happened, but per a recommendation from some newly met friends I ended up at King's Hookah Lounge last night. This place really seemed to be a no frills more authentic type of a hookah bar. Some people may find this as a turnoff if they are used to the trendy hookah joints. I found it to be quite enjoyable and completely suitable for some lounging and smoking. The staff here were all quite nice and came by a few times to make sure our coals were nice and hot. Along with our two hookah set ups we all had some hot tea to sip on. We sampled the rose, mint, and green apple tobaccos. My favorite of the bunch was the mint. Brought back memories of smoking the occasional menthol cigarette many years ago in my former life as a smoker. There's a decent number of flavors here and seating. The seating itself isn't that comfortable, and due to neighborhood complaints you can't sit outside after 10 pm, so don't know how that gets managed in the summer heat. Flavors are inconsistently made. We got safari melon dew mint two days in a row. First day it was on point with what I'd expect. Second day tasted nothing like the first. A bit pricey for hookah, but it does last a long time. It's also an additional $5 for the third member or they have to get their own hookah. We were smoking it for about 45 minutes and can tell it could probably still last another hour more. We decided to leave the hookah to squeeze out prime bar-hopping time. The hookah is very tall, smoke is thick, and was never harsh. One con about the hookah is that it's singled hosed only. It doesn't make you feel light headed which is great and you can taste the flavors. The owner was very nice and helpful. It did take him a little long to set up our hookah and put the coals in though. The atmosphere is a bit grimy. The seats are at different levels and not really comfortable. King's is a traditional hookah lounge located on Couch St. It attracts all crowds, the traditional and the non. I have only been there 3 times, but for the most part, each time has been a pleasant experience. They have a wide array of flavors, my favorite being Peach and Rose. I believe regular flavors start ta $13-$15 and exotic around around $16-$20. There are couches and also a little back "room" that has different colored black lights light up on the side. It's not a closed room, but the lights give you the feel that you have privacy and there are sheer curtains to close if you'd like. The owner is friendly, however sometimes it's hard to track him down to replace coals or what not. But generally he's floating around some where, if not smoking some hookah himself outside with friends. They have INCREDIBLE Sharbat. They also have cold and hot drinks, free wi-fi, two TV's that are usually playing sports of some kind, and an array of hip hop music that floats around you with the smoke. read more

Price matters, but it is a two-way street! I was staying at the Northwest Portland Hostel and this place is not even a walk away. Soo close! Anyway, the price is a bit more, but the hookahs really smoke well and full. They're tall and cool the smoke well, the hoses are thick, and the handles are nice and long. King's coals are real charcoal and are unlimited/free. Plus they last twice as long as similar priced places that use the mashed charcoal briquettes!! As an avid hookah enthusiast I was impressed and completely fine with the prices, if anything I feel like we underpaid. Their service was with a smile and you can tell King's loves hookah too. Came here on a Thursday evening. We went to the front and ordered and paid the sat down. We ordered a safari melon dew with mint in a deluxe head (costs $2 extra). The hookah was large and sat on the floor. The tables are ridiculously small. You can put your water bottle on it, that's pretty much it. The seating is bench style with some pillows, not the most comfortable but it does get the job done. There are a few TVs and they play music as well. Volume is good enough to hear but also you can carry on conversation with whomever you come with. Flavor wise.. it was good what we usually order.. they added more mint that I usually get but it still tasted good. My problem was with the coal. They did not come around often enough to change the coal and once the pieces get smaller it does not smoke as well. We also cleared out the ash ourselves frequently. Thankfully they left tongs so we could do that. We had to blow out of the head a few times when multiple coals were added because the flavor was burning to quickly. read more

Since I wrote my review two years ago I went back to this place once on a whim. I was visiting the first time I was there. The second time I had moved up to Portland and wanted to enjoy a nice smoke with some friends. The atmosphere hadn't changed, the people inside weren't rude, but they also weren't very helpful and the earwig bugs still lived there. Worse than that is the "compliment" i got from a random user who's never reviewed anything but rather has attacked me for my opinion of the place. Search her image and sure enough, it's a fake account. Are the owners attacking reviewers? I'll leave that for you to decide. My advice originally was to go to Pied Cow for hookah instead, but really my advice is this... GET YOUR OWN HOOKAH! Smoking Hookah out at bars is an expensive investment in your time and money. Rather than spend 15 dollars per pipe per smoke why don't you save, buy your own and see how quickly that money starts to pile up. Once you get past the initial investment of the hookah you'll find that every time you want to smoke it's much cheaper. 15 dollars for a hookah rental or 4 dollars for a pack of shisha? So coming from Dubai, Hookah lounges are going to be hard to please. So the night we were out there, the person at the counter was substituting and couldn't tell us what flavor was good. We went with what is in our comfort zone - the mixed berry. It was alright for me. I felt the flavor was weak. But it got me light headed, so guess it has the power. Customer service was good. They kept coming around checking on our coals and ensuring we were doing fine. What I didn't like about the place, the ambience was pretty run down. Then again my standards are pretty high to meet. Their outdoor group seating is limited. They all were occupied when we went. And while we got a place indoor, it was floor seating and couch seating. So it was awkward having a face to face conversation where one party was elevated. Also it was pretty smoky indoors. I think there should be some kind of device to clear the air, but it was like a fog hit the place. But on the good side, there seemed to be quite a few people on their laptops. And crowds walking in from bars/parties so it is quite a popular hangout. I don't think they have much to offer in terms of food, but mc donalds is right behind. So there is your food fix. On the plus side, they are open very late. So great place to chill for a night out. And they do have a large variety of flavors, which is great. Price wise - it is pretty reasonable! It's a bit spendy compared to the hookah lounges that I'm used to in Raleigh, they charge $15 a hookah... but it is totally worth the price! On the West coast it seems most places with hookah are trendy loud club-like places, which seems kind of nonsensical to me. I smoke hookah to relax and talk with friends. This place isn't fancy, but it is comfortable, the staff is great, and the people are friendly, which is really everything that I'm looking for in a hookah lounge. I've only been twice while I'm visiting Portland, once on a Saturday night and once on a Sunday afternoon... vastly different crowds, but fun each time. Weekend late night was crowded and crazy with the bar kids coming out before or after drinking. Sunday afternoon was more casual with mostly small groups of friends smoking and visiting. I'll definitely be back though next trip. The quality of smoke was fantastic. They actually use real charcoal instead of the quick light chemical stuff that most places use, so they last a long time and you can really control the amount of smoke (I like it lighter than most). The staff had no problem coming around and giving me more charcoal every time I needed it. They use proper hookahs too, not the plasticy made in China ones that I see in some places. They even sell handmade Turkish ones! They have al-Fakher tobacco and I think one other brand, but al-Fakher has always been my favorite. Lemon Mint is the best!! Grape Mint and Peach tie for second. The owner doesn't speak English too well though, I overheard him trying to explain something to another customer and I ended up helping get through the language barrier.
