One area of the "parking lot"
Justin W.

The Only Review You Need To Read My family celebrated a wedding anniversary and opted for Kings Contrivance restaurant for dinner, as Mom wanted to eat at a formal restaurant. This was my first time here and I was a little confused about the parking. I get that this place didn't start out as a restaurant, so no points taken off for that; I got it figured out. We reserved a room and were allowed to show up early to decorate, then the family returned later at our designated reservation time. We were seated promptly, and our evening began. I'll say this - our server wasn't particularly attentive. A couple of times I had to get up, find someone and ask for things because she would disappear for long intervals of time. And it was odd to me because it really wasn't all that busy that evening. My impression of the food was it was bland. The seafood bisque had tons of crab meat and shrimp and was very creamy (as bisque should be), but it didn't really have any flavor. I had to keep adding salt to it. My entree was the chicken breast florentine, and again, thank goodness the salt shaker was nearby because I needed it for every bite. For dessert, the creme brûlée was amazing. The top layer could have a bit more crispy, but it was thick and flavorful. I don't know if I would consider this a "formal" restaurant. I think "quaint" is a better description. It did have an "old house" smell to it when you first walk in, but that's part of the appeal of a historic mansion. This is a perfect date night restaurant - especially if the weather is nice and you could sit at one of the outdoor tables because the grounds are really beautiful. You'll probably need to get your alignment checked after leaving because the road leading into and out of the place is very bumpy. All in all, my personal impression of the place was "meh." However, I'll probably dine here again at some point as my girlfriend enjoyed it more than I did and said she would be up to coming back (I am versed in Female-speak, and in English, that means, "I'd like you to bring me back here again"). And you know if your woman wants something, it has to happen (females - am I right, guys?). Tip: bread is not automatically brought out - you have to ask for it. And it's not complimentary - they do charge for it. But it's pretty good bread.

This is one of our favorite restaurants & we've been dining here for years. As always the food is superb, the presentation fabulous, stellar service and beautiful outdoor seating inside an open tent. It happened to rain while we were there so no worries!! They had soft shell crabs on special so we all went for it - (you can have single or double) nice sized and lightly floured, fried crispy & served on a bed of the chef's signature coleslaw & drizzled with a creamy mustard sauce (I think). Sooo yummy! Unparalleled! We also had the spicy shrimp which were fried medium shrimps tossed in a chili cream sauce & served on a bed of sweet & spicy cucumber salad sprinkled with crushed macadamia nuts. You just have to try it! Our server, Myrna was perfect! Attentive and sweet. She was quite busy that night but we were never neglected. The manager, Richard was also very accommodating, attentive and quite sociable with all the restaurant guests. Definitely a unique & memorable dining experience!

Dining area decor for the holidays

I've been here twice and my Uncle and Aunt have treated me both times for a holiday dinner as well as my birthday. A very unique experience and definitely reminds me of Mrs. K's Toll house except a bit more upscale. Decor/Ambiance: Love that this restaurant is historic and was once someone's mansion. It's unique, memorable and definitely makes the dining experience a bit more exciting. During the holidays, it's beautifully decorated with ornaments, Christmas trees and lights. During both of my experiences, the dining rooms were fairly busy (not packed though). I would suggest dressing more formally but very proper attire is not necessary (just avoid wearing sneakers or sweatpants). Service/hours: The service is about average (which is why I gave 4 stars). Staff tends to be forgetful and slow. However, they've always been professional, kind and great with checking in on our tables. Additionally, I wish they had later hours (until 11 PM) on Fridays-Sundays. I know on the weekends, my friends and family would appreciate having later times to enjoy a nice meal and chat over a bottle of wine. Beverages: There's a large variety of wines to choose from and they offer a great deal with half-off on Fridays for parties of 8 or more (except in December). I've tried 2 of their bottles of dry-red wine and this was honestly the best birthday gift I could ask for haha! Food: I highly recommend ordering off of the Prix Fixe Menu! Excluding beverages, tax and gratuity, it's priced at $35 per person for a 3-course meal. For their appetizers, their soups and bisques are okay but their salads are decent. I personally like their crab cakes and salmon as an entrees and I LOVE their creme brulee for dessert. I've tried all their desserts and the Creme brulee is amazing! Many other restaurants I've been to tend to really burn the sugar on top or undercook their dessert so that the custard has a weird consistently...NOT HERE THOUGH! They keep it simple with plating just a few berries and I love that because to me, a classic dessert needs to be presented simplistically and the elegance will speak in its flavor alone. Definitely a great place to try at least once with friends or family when you feel like splurging a bit more than going to a casual restaurant.

I remembered this place as quite exquisite from a previous work experience. So, based on previous experience, I thought this would be a great place to celebrate a family birthday on Saturday night. Won't say it was disappointing or great; will just say it was "meh". The mansion and the bar are well kept. The food was good (not great). Even though we called to make reservations very early we were placed on a folding table upstairs (it wasn't super busy). The service was good enough. The prices were high as you would expect for upscale dining but honestly the ambiance, service, and food just didn't match. We ordered the Pepita Salmon, Veal Piccata, Beef Tips, New York Strip, and the Stuffed Shrimp. We had to pay for our birthday dessert (slightly disappointing) after racking up a $400+ bill for 5. Would be a hard sell to get me back but definitely not what I remembered from years past.

Quaint restaurant, fast service, delicious dishes. I took hubby for his birthday to the Kings contrivance restaurant. We ordered the lobster bisque ( I was not a fan of this soup) and Ceasar salad. The ceasar was good. Hubby had the filet mignon and ate everything on his plate. Needless, to say I think he enjoyed his meal. I had a humongous plate of angel hair pasta with crab meat and shrimps (it was lacking a bit of salt, but the hostess brought some to the table). The key lime pie served with coconut ice cream and berries was really good. we cleaned our dessert plates. We will be back to try other dishes in that inviting ambience.

My wife and I had eaten here separately with friends (as this is our "go to" restaurant when we entertain out of town guests) and decided to celebrate our anniversary here together. Our meals were excellent. The crab soup here is nearly my mother's recipe with just enough heat. The main courses were excellent perfectly prepared salmon and scallops. Our server overheard our discussion with another table that we were celebrating our anniversary and customized our desserts (pictured). We will be back in our anniversary every year and for other special times!

I came to the restaurant to celebrate a scholarship luncheon and I was throughly impressed. The staff was so friendly and quick. The food was delicious. I got the chicken Chesapeake and my mom got the jumbo lump crab cake. The crab cake was nothing but crab which is amazing because most crab cakes are just filler. Also the chicken Chesapeake had nice large chunks of crab meat. The dessert was delicious as well. The key lime pie came with coconut ice cream as well as fresh berries and whipped cream. The bathrooms are very clean and updated. This place is a must to visit.

The food was delicious! The service was ok. The prices have gone up since COVID-19. More expensive than we were expecting. Only real disappointment was the chairs!! Two hours for dinner is fine but not when are sitting in 50 year old dinning room chairs. Please upgrade. We had a nice time and my mother 82 enjoyed it.

Ask the Community - Kings Contrivance Restaurant

Do they have a bar for folks who might be dining alone or just want to grab a drink?

There is no bar; it's really just a sit-down formal restaurant with tables.

Are there vegan options here?

Several appetizers are vegan, but entrees have either fish or meat. Depends on how you define "vegan" whether not you'll eat fish.

Did I want to add to that, for an additional cost, the option of unlimited drinks? Did I understand that these offerings were for a 2-hour window only? Did I know that all bottles of wine were 50% off this night? Did I have reservations? As fun as the unlimited dining and drink options sounded, all I really desired was a good dinner and that's exactly what I got here. My dinner at Ambar proved to be my favorite of all those consumed during a recent 10 night string of dining out. Ambar features a dense menu filled with the tiniest of print, and a huge array of offerings. They're a small chain of restaurants serving what they refer to as Balkan cuisine which, as it turns out, covers quite a large swath of Earth. Whatever you do, don't miss the Spreads Tasting ($12) as it's a great introductory plate of tartness featuring nothing but delicious flavors. Ajvar, white bean hummus, beet tzatziki, marinated olives, pickles, and freshly baked pita could almost be a small meal for one. To follow the spreads we shared Lamb Lasagna ($19) (luscious and rich with a both tomato sauce and a creamy Bechamel) and Brussels Sprouts with bacon, served in a bed of lemon-garlic yogurt. Everything was a perfect explosion of flavors, all savored along with a great bottle of Serbian wine (Radovanovic Cabernet, $63 but priced at half that for the evening special). Seating is upstairs, in a bar area at the back of the ground floor entry, at a couple of tables just inside the front door, and at outside tables in front of the restaurant. The upstairs seating looked particularly attractive; make reservations in advance to secure it. Ambar is a restaurant I'd not just happily return to but one I'd actually seek out wherever I might again find it.

We had everything from corn riblets to mussels to grilled branzino, and some mushroom flatbread. There were so many options. Would I recommend it? Absolutely!

This was followed by assorted desserts (French macaroons, mini eclairs, lemon meringue tarts, etc.), blinis, and birthday cake. All was delicious and I ate too many! Service was attentive and the water jugs were constantly replenished. My only two minor complaints- (1) dishes came with a regular fork to serve. It would have been better to have oversized forks and large spoons for serving some of the dishes (ex, filleting the whole fish was a challenge withy a regular fork even though it was ore-cut) and (2) they did not change out the silverware during the meal. I think we got at least 9 dishes so we got our money's worth! Food (5/5): I love all the food here. I was sad that the steak tartare was no longer on them menu as this was one of my favorite dishes. That thoughtfulness is one of the many reasons I was excited to try it. When we arrived, I was initially concerned after learning that the "G" on the menu indicated dishes **containing** gluten rather than being gluten-free. Since many menu items were marked with a "G," I worried my options would be very limited, especially for the unlimited brunch experience. Thankfully, our server, Emma, immediately put me at ease. She brought me the food allergy menu, answered my questions with patience, and made sure I understood what was safe for me to enjoy. While my husband and I were deciding whether to stay, the manager, Antonio, came to our table after Emma shared my dietary concerns. His kindness completely changed the experience. He took the time to explain my options, offered to have the kitchen modify several dishes, and reassured me that their goal was for me to feel safe and enjoy my meal. Thanks to Emma and Antonio, what started with uncertainty became one of the most enjoyable brunch experiences I've had. I was able to enjoy a variety of delicious dishes, the mimosas were a great value, and the restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful, with floor-to-ceiling windows that fill the space with natural light. What I'll remember most, though, is how genuinely cared for I felt. Before we left, Antonio stopped by one last time to make sure I was happy with my meal and that all of my needs had been met. My husband had put so much love and intention into choosing this restaurant, and thanks to Emma and Antonio, we both left with happy hearts and full bellies. If you have food intolerances or dietary restrictions, I hope this review gives you confidence to visit Ambar. Their team didn't just accommodate my needs. They made me feel welcome, respected, and cared for. That's the kind of hospitality that earns five stars from me.

All the appetizers were excellent. The patè was presented nicely with accoutrements of fig jam, cornichon, macerated tomatoes and bread. The mussels were offered in a Thai curry sauce but we asked for another serving option due to an allergy concerns. They offered us a white wine and garlic option and we gladly took it. We shared the beef medallions as our entree and a side of fries because I spotted a server carrying fish and chips and the steak fries style potatoes were speaking to me. Hugs for my friends who are regulars, and a warm hello and handshake for me. After a brief wait for our table of ten, we were seated graciously, and the experience began! Water, drink orders and bread were brought, I think we had at least six or so people checking in, taking orders and refreshing glasses of wine, for those who ordered the $125 wine pairings to the $145 dinner, I was driving, so I ordered two glasses of wine - $22 and $18. The amuse bouche was a tiny BLT and a small glass of clarified gazpacho- never heard of that, but the liquid was clear with tiny bits of red and green peppers and was so flavorful! The first course was yellow corn panne cotta with a smear of jumbo lump crab - oh, wow! Almost my favorite course. My favorite was rockfish ravioli in a basil and clam broth - could have eaten way more than the three of those if it was a main, but they were generously sized!!! The third course, Chicken Ballantine, Summer Vegetables, Natural Jus, was a little strange - there was a small medallion of chicken breast that was, I think, ground and under cooked - spongy, wrapped in some veg, maybe bok choy?, and then wrapped in dried-ish chicken skin. A little like a sushi presentation, but cooked. It was accented by a tiny fried piece of chicken breast. That fried bit is all I ate. Dessert was divine - a peach that was really a construction of white chocolate, sponge cake inside and peach butter - nestled on meringue and other yummy things like a tiny scoop of peach sorbet - and a companion sorbet in a fruit liquid. By that time, my taste buds were so overwhelmed by deliciousness, I had to get dessert to go (sans sorbet). I had it for breakfast- what a treat!! Overall, a wonderful experience - only a couple of odd things - since we were 10, we asked for separate checks by couples - the server grumbled and complained about something about having to override their system from the time we asked for that until the time we paid the check. A few couples had to go to the bar to pay the check, until she was able to do a work around to let the last of us pay...after waiting for some sort of fix...and more grumbling. And, while I really appreciate that they provided small stands for our purses next to our chairs, I tripped over them while using the ladies, and getting seated on return when the sweet staff ran to follow us back in the room and tried to pull our chairs for reseating. We left with a sweet basket of a little brioche bread with lovely plum jam for each of us. So special!! I can't wait to go back - maybe for lunch time. Such a memorable experience!!

The food then took around 25-30 minutes to come out, which felt very long since we were on a tight schedule for our flight. When the food finally arrived, I ordered the macaroni and cheese, and unfortunately it was the worst mac and cheese I've ever had. I don't want to be mean, but it was very bland and really needed salt. My sister surprisingly liked it, but it just wasn't for me at all. The rest of my family did enjoy their meals, and I thought the fries were decent, just lightly seasoned. My mom especially liked the grilled cheese. The waiter himself was nice and kept our drinks refilled, so I don't think the long wait was entirely his fault. The restaurant is very cute inside with cozy, old-style vibes and festive Christmas decorations, which I really liked. However, between the long wait times, the limited menu, and my disappointing mac and cheese, I wouldn't recommend that dish. Overall, it's a charming place, but the service was too slow for us--especially when trying to catch a flight.

The Food Market was such a great experience! I absolutely love this place! The food was delicious!…read moreThe lobster fingers and grilled cheese birria were definitely my favorites. The lobster fingers were crispy, flavorful, and so satisfying, while the grilled cheese birria was rich, cheesy, and packed with flavor. I would order both again! (and I have!) The service was friendly, attentive, and welcoming throughout my meal. The ambiance was lively, modern, and fun, making it a great place for a night out, date night, or dinner with friends. I'll definitely be back!

The Food Market lost another star from me…read more Maryland crab soup with the cream of crab was delicious. It was easily in my top five but I don't have an official list. But it stopped there. We each got the chicken skewer dish. I don't remember the name but it was a kabob-ish dish. Although it was presented well, the chicken was bland. Even the sauce struggled to bring flavor to the meal. Our server was friendly and relatively attentive but did not look well put together. I know that sounds rude but I do not expect to see my server's belly peaking out under a shirt while I'm ordering. Also, the tables were a little too close together, which meant our server had to stand a little awkwardly close. From the delicious sandwich I had the first time I visited which is no longer on the menu, to the cold dishes we got during our previous visit, to the bland grilled chicken, I think we should give up. Oh, one more thing, the manager (?) was sprinkling chives on the soup from the service side of the line with his bare hands. Not cool.
