Gave me something to do; to explore and Yelp while my wife shopped next door at the Nevada Marketplace. Also a cool find - Memory kits and blood pressure kits (not for me, but useful for my guests if/when they visit). Ambiance - HUGE location!! Not too busy, but definitely had some activity in all parts of the library. From the computers, to the kids area, private rooms, group meetings, etc. Open 6 days a week from 10am to 4pm, 6pm or 7pm. The Donner Pass Railroad Tunnel Hike was one of the reasons for our trip to the area. My boyfriend…read morehad always wanted to check out the Donner Petroglyphs, and I stumbled across the rail tunnels when looking for things to do while in the area. We parked at the Donner Ski Summit - if you are looking to check out this hike, that is the best place to park and access the start of the tunnels. I truly enjoyed this hike, but was ill prepared. I was fully committed once we were in the tunnels & I should have went back to the car and swapped my "barefoot" style shoes for my hiking boots. The large chunk gravel path killed my feet with the thin soles of the shoes I wore. We hiked through about 5-6 tunnels before heading back. We did a total of 6 miles in and back. There were alot of beautiful street art within the tunnels, we found 19 cave ghosts along the trail as well as some other reoccurring variations of different items over the course of the trail. I would like to eventually take the trail past the last tunnel and to the next set of tunnels some day. This is a trail we would do again next time we are in the area. Though the weather was nice, we both wore hooded sweatshirts as the are in the tunnels got quite chilly. If you plan on checking these trails out, take well charged flashlights or head lights with extra batteries. The tunnels can be PITCH Black when you are in the heart of them. Overall this was a really cool thing to see and I would love to do it again with the correct shoes!

The folks who…read moreprocess my requests do a great job making the scholarship that we don't own accessible to me. Sometimes if it's a book I've requested, a staff member will even deliver it to my office for me! The stacks have a pretty decent selection of the philosophy monographs that I'd like to consult but that I don't already own. We subscribe to most of the academic journals that I need for my research and teaching. The building is absolutely beautiful, and it warms my heart to see so many students working in it. There are lots of computers, study rooms, and tables for getting one's work done. The Bytes coffee shop has basic snacks and drinks for folks who need a pick-me-up but don't want to walk outside to the Joe. I like how there are sometimes free recitals in the main floor rotunda. I often disappear into the Graduate Reading Room whenever I need to grade papers in a comfy chair without any distractions. I've booked the basement floor main room on multiple occasions to show films to my classes, and the process was easy and the technology worked. Why not a full five stars? I wish parking were easier. The course reserves system is a pain in the neck, which is why I don't use it for my classes. I wish the library would allocate more resources to subscribe to a couple key subfield journals that I have tried to make a case for us needing to own. I hear that working as a library junior faculty member is filled with drama. But all in all, the KC is great!

There are many things about this place that makes it awesome. The library is one. It is state of the art. They have the MARS system that retrieves the book that you request instead of looking for it yourself or a librarian. How awesome that you have a robot get your book for you and kind of creepy if you think about it. Terminators are real haha. No, but seriously a cool device and makes it very easy. There is also a small coffee and food shop next to the library. Their coffee is decent and I go in there from time to time to grab a cup. During the semester you can book a room in the library for studying. You can also book it for a group study session. There are also plenty of computers in there for students to use. You must have your student access account to use these computers. There is also a hidden library attached to the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center. There is access to that library from the north side of the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center and an elevator outside the north entrance of the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge building. At the Ground floor is the @ One Center. This is a great place for doing your homework. They have a lot of computers here. They have Mac and Regular PC computers. This is a great place for digital media students. You can also rent movies, video equipment, a sound room and much more. You can also print your papers here and also print out graphs, stickers, etc. I forget the proper terminology for it but it's a place where you can do printouts like Kinkos and I'm sure they can do so much more that what I know. But it's pretty awesome. I think they have a tutoring center by the south entrance. I think it's a tutoring center I have never used it myself but I saw a sign once. Also they have the Wells Fargo auditorium that holds artist presentations, public presentations, movies, and much more. I'm sure I am missing a bunch of stuff to add to this review but that is what I can remember. Thank your for reading my review.

After meeting at the State…read moreCapital and enjoying Lunch at the Supreme Court, we all wandered over the Nevada Legislature ready to talk with various representatives about 4 specific bills of interest. When I worked in Industry years ago in California, our business association did this sort of thing. The procedure is the same. You dress up a little more and you go to the representative's office for maybe a 15 minute appointment. If you're lucky, you get to talk to their Chief of Staff, who does the heavy lifting. Or if you're not, the person is a no show, usually because a vote has been called or there's an unexpected caucus meeting. In between, the representative escorts you into their office for a pleasant conversation with questions and of course a heartfelt thank you. In our case, we were speaking with "friends" of our legislation, which also meant lots of smiles, softball discussion, and pictures for future publication. The State of Nevada version is a bit different than California as it's a smaller legislature, it's in Carson City, there's a huge Las Vegas area contingent, and it only meets for 4-5 months every other year. So you get situations like the one one Las Vegas representative I chatted with about his long term rental in the Carson Valley and what he did in his free time so far away from home. I suppose that also goes for a lot of the support staff, lobbyists, etc. who have to be here too. If you're local, it's good seasonal or retirement work, but only if you want several 60+ hour weeks concentrated within this relatively tight and robust schedule. It was great to be back to this sort of thing and to see parts of the legislative process (and energy) up close. I was also impressed with the professionalism of the building staff, particularly Security. They also have a nice little gift shop on the ground floor that is definitely worth a look during one of your waits.

Some interesting history we learned today from the gentleman who gave us our tour of the legislature building and the grounds. The Nevada Legislature first met in 1861 at the Warm Springs Hotel. Once the Nevada State Capitol building was built the Nevada Legislature met there until 1971. In 1971 they built their own building.
