From the moment I stepped foot into the shop, I was greeted with warm smiles and a delightful aroma of freshly fried fish and chips. The menu at Tib Street Chippy offered a wide variety of options, catering to both traditional and modern tastes. I opted for their classic fish and chips, and I was blown away by the quality and flavour. The fish was perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The chips were golden and had that ideal combination of fluffy interior and crispy exterior. It was truly a match made in culinary heaven. What impressed me the most, however, was the promptness of the service. Despite the busy evening rush, the staff at Tib Street Chippy managed to deliver my order in record time. They were efficient, ensuring that every customer received their food with minimal wait. The attention to detail and dedication to providing excellent service was evident in every interaction I had with the staff. Not only was the food exceptional and the service prompt, but the atmosphere at Tib Street Chippy was also inviting. The cozy seating area and charming decor added to the overall experience. It was clear that the owners and staff took great pride in creating a welcoming environment for their customers. In conclusion, I highly recommend Tib Street Chippy to anyone craving delicious fish and chips. The exceptional quality of the food, combined with the prompt and attentive service, make it a standout eatery. I can't wait to visit again and indulge in their mouthwatering offerings. Next time I'll try the sausage.

The smell as you pass a chippy is enough to draw in all but those with the ultimate power of will, and this is completely the case with the Battered Cod. It opens early in the morning and serves fried breakfasts, coffees and tea-cakes to those shopping in town, and at some point in the day, the fryers come on and more traditional 'chippy fayre' is on offer. I commend the quality of this whole-heartedly; a portion of fish, chips, mushy-peas and gravy from here is as good as anywhere in the Manchester area, and whilst no more 'fresh from the sea' than anywhere else this far from the coast, the food is high quality, high-value, filling, and refreshingly british. Just don't have it for every meal!

Yes, I have chippy-rules. Though admittedly it doesn't have a cool interior like Fish Bait in West Didsbury (http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/fish-bait-fish-bar-manchester), they resemble the ever-so-British chippy of slightly worn counter tops and plastic chairs. There's plenty of seating in there if you wanted to eat in. My order came to £6, which seemed reasonable given the size of the fish and the portion of chips. And the verdict was, well, A-OK - the fish's batter was light and crispy, the fish itself was tender (if fish can be 'tender'...) and the chips were really good, especially the ones smothered in curry sauce. Om nom nom.

But no traditional English chippies, and by that I mean ones that cook things like they do by the sea, crispy bubbly batter and chips that taste like chips. Now,as much as I like fish and chips i'm not one for driving an hour to Blackpool for some (Not helped by the fact that I detest Blackpool these days). But i'd been told about Grandma Pollards a few years ago and as myself and Mrs Z were at a loose end the other day we thought we'd give it a try. First off the exterior, the front just looks like any other chippy/chippy restaurant, but round the back it is a different story. Not only can you eat your food in a parked up bus, they also have a picnic area right by the canal (see pics) and a lovely spot it is too! Being boring we decided to eat inside the plaice (see what I did there?) and we both opted for the same food namely jumbo haddock, chips and mushy peas,or to give it's real name, food of the mythical sky beings.... Large haddock said the menu, and bloody large it was too,it was hanging over the side of the plate large. It was also really, really lovely, the batter was crispy and bubbly in equal measure and the fish inside was soft, flaky and tasty. The chips did indeed taste of chips and the mushy peas were also of the top notch variety. Grandma pollard also sells home made pies (none of that Hollands mush) and their own cakes, and even though we were incredibly stuffed from our fish feast we decided to get a couple of pies and a brick sized vanilla slice to take home with us,all of which were very nice, especially the vanilla slab!! I am now very happy because i've found a proper chippy that is not too far away from home, and at the end of the day that's what's important in life,a proper chippy!!

There are scrawlings on the walls to keep you occupied, all fish-related. Battered haddock was crispy on the outside and satisfying on the inside, the chips were plump and hearty - there were masses of them, so ask for a small portion if you're not a bottomless pit like me. The curry sauce for dipping was equally good. A wholly excellent takeaway destination, sure they could be cheaper, but then the food quality would no doubt suffer. Unfortunately "summer is coming" and the last thing my body needs is a massive chippy tea so I didn't expect to try The Sea Basket for a while. Last weekend however, my mum, ever the feeder, decided that on a rainy day a chippy was in fact the only thing that would do. I was happy I could park outside (although my poor car was a bit bashed from the state of the road, watch out!) and was even happier to notice a sign that they deliver (note to future hungover self). The fish selection is not the most extensive, the only traditional options were cod or haddock. They also sell "spicy fish", whatever that is, as well as scampi and fish cakes and the usual sausage and pies etc. My parents wanted to have haddock and it turned out they didn't have any so we all opted for the cod plus chips. A sign indicated all fish was responsibly sourced. You can choose either small or large. Fearing small would be too small (!), I asked how big was big? The nice man looked down to indicate the size of possibly the biggest take away box I've ever seen. So we picked small. Whilst waiting for the fish to be cooked, we were offered free tartare sauce and a lemon, which I thought was a nice touch. I think it ended up costing about £12 for three meals which certainly doesn't make it the cheapest chippy around. I came away feeling pleased though, the place looked clean and service was decent. So was the food any good? The fish was great actually, lovely batter, not soggy at all and the fish was tasty and moist. The chips were good but nothing special and there were too many compared with the size of fish. Naturally I had to eat them all though....screw summer!

Based in Didsbury Village but also with an excellent branch in upmarket Alderley Edge, Fosters offers a dine in and takeaway service. Having been at Didsbury Beer Festival all afternoon, an evening of stodge was well required and deciding to go without the formalities of having to dine in, takeaway seemed a smart choice (until I got home and realised that my wifes plan was to watch the X-factor - oh how I wished to have stayed at the beer fest!) For 2 haddock, 2 chips and the peas and curry sauce mentioned above it was £16.50 which was pretty good value. Service was quick and 2 guys on the counter seemed up for a chat, unless that was just me after a good few pints of fine craft beer.... This takeaway occasion was great although we have been in the day before (around 6 months ago) and found the Saturday service to be fairly poor and staff very unfriendly so it's up to you really if you want to chance it by dining in.

Whilst I was a student in Sheffield, we had heated arguments over which chippy we were loyal to. In Manchester, I've been hard pressed to find a purveyor of fried potatoes to match those I loved in the land of hills. The New Britannia, as it is now named, is as close as I've managed to come so far. I've been to the Britannia a few times, on each occasion going for my usual "chippy tea": fish, chips and the obligatory mushy peas. It'll set you back around £6, which isn't overly expensive considering that the portions are generous. I can put away a good amount of food, and this place has yet to fail in satisfying my appetite. The fish has always been well cooked - not done to death and in a nice, crisp batter. Whenever I've been in, it's also been fried fresh to order - which means it's you, rather than your food, which will be sitting around for a bit. The chips are good, but not exceptional. That is, they're not the kind of crappy half-cooked shambles you can sometimes get but they're not always that right kind of crispy you associate with a good chippy. The mushy peas are decent too, not too runny but not green goop either. I have a habit, acquired from my time in Sheffield, of slapping a large amount of Henderson's Relish on things like this. (For those of you who are yet to become familiar with the famous Sheffield sauce, it looks similar to Worcester sauce but doesn't taste the same.) Even without a good coating of the Hendo's, though, the food here is tasty and filling and they're not shy with the salt and vinegar when you ask them for "Lots; like, seriously, plastered". If I'm eating unhealthily, I go for it big time. The only criticism I have of this place is that their opening hours are pretty short. They do a lunchtime and evening opening, but they're not somewhere that you can call in to after a session in the pub or after making your way back from a heavy one in Manchester at 3AM. Which is a shame, because I'll take a portion of proper chips after a heavy drinking session over fries any day of the week.
