Still we ordered a few appetizers, like Chicken Satay, Prawn toast, Malaysian cabbage and we added Duck to that meal because it was suggested that the Chicken will come spicier. Anyway, the Chicken Satay is yummy with three skewers. However, the peanut sauce that came with this didn't taste like there's any peanut in the sauce as it was very pale in color. We, also, felt there's way too much sesame seeds and too little shrimp for the prawn toast with the Sriracha mayo.

Especially considering this is in the downtown area, I can see it getting packed for dinner. I loved the ambiance and decor inside the restaurant. I got the laksa after reading many reviews recommending this dish. It was on the spicy side, and it was good, but I wouldn't say it was outstanding. Next time I would try something else. I was intrigued by the Portuguese custard tarts, as that wasn't expected from a Malaysian restaurant, but I was already planning on getting dessert later, so I skipped them this time.

I went shortly after 4 pm, when they open for dinner. There were no diners in the restaurant, but…read morethey were working on delivery orders. I ordered takeaway: Panang curry (mild) with pork, and curry puffs. The order was ready in less than 15 minutes and cost just over NZ$34 (US$20). BTW, if you want rice, that's extra. There's a ramp up to the restaurant. One of the toilets in the restaurant is accessible. The curry puffs were interesting. They were completely filled (no pockets of air) and were not greasy. I liked them but longed for a stronger curry flavor. So I dipped them in the Panang curry! It was even better. I do stuff like that, dip or mix other Thai food into whatever curry I got. Their version of Panang curry included green beans, carrots, and peas. There was a generous amount of pork. And while I requested mild, I'd classify the heat as mild-medium. My nose started running almost immediately. The curry had less of a peanut-y flavor as most others I've tried. I would have liked less heat, and a more intense flavor. But all in all, it was pretty good. Probably a good intro to Thai curry for those who haven't had it before.

I went to Thailand a couple months after New Zealand. I can certainly say Tham Nak Thai's pad thai was better than some of the ones I had in Bangkok. Queenies was just the place I needed. The Grub. Wonton Noodle Soup ($16) and Beef noodle soup ($16). The wonton soup came with skinny noodles and the beef soup came with a thicker noodle. Both topped with a bed of spinach and delicious hot broth. This hit the spot for us. I was surprised how expensive the soups were. Back home Chinese food is much cheaper.

They definitely cater to tourists because there were no locals in the area. We ordered a set of dumplings (9) that you can mix and match so we did 3 different mixes: a couple beef and chicken. We couldn't tell a difference in flavor but they were all delish so it was all good. We also ordered a size of the chicken and corn soup because it was only a few dollars extra to add on the side as well as one steamed pork bun. The soup was very good and the bowl was large. All that food was plenty for us two to share and after walking thru the chilled river hike it hit the spot! The prices were amazing. It was one of our cheapest meals and we were definitely satisfied!

Main course was Venison loin. I can't say enough about how good the food was. Epic cheese platter with a Kiwi dessert red to pair for dessert. Our waiter, Sam, was everything you would want in a server. Knowledgeable, helpful, and gracious. It's a large place. We sat in leather upholstered wingback chairs -- very comfortable. I ordered the French onion soup for an entree, the venison for the main plus the duck fat potatoes. Hands down the French onion soup was the most delicious thing I had all night, and probably in my two weeks in New Zealand. It was fantastic. The venison came out. Great presentation. But even with the sauces that it came with--the exception being the *two* bits of onion that came with the meal--it was very average. Not bad. It was cooked well. Rare as the chef suggested. But there was little there there. Definitely not as flavorsome as the French onion soup which set my expectations really high. Then the duck fat potatoes--are just potatoes? Like, literally chucks of potatoes (cooked well) but without any seasoning. No sauce. Nothing. Very bland potatoes. So in the end you had this really clunky meal that wasn't overwhelmingly delicious. It was just good. But this is meant to be a bit of an upscale joint for Queenstown, so it misses the mark. The exception to all of this mediocrity was the service. The service was impeccable. I should note there was a bit of time between the starter & the main but that's probably more of a back of the house issue. They do know how to cook things well, so I think if you come here for a steak, you probably won't be terribly disappointed. I expected a bit more. All that said, I would come back and drink gallons of that soup.
